Chapter 8

Raina The whole surroundings were quiet while we were eating lunch in the dining area. Even though Daddy wasn't speaking, I could feel that he was upset with me. Maybe it's because he prefers Evo to marry Rina instead of me. Evo's family is wealthy, so if Rina marries him, she will surely live like a queen. And that's what Daddy wants for his favorite daughter. "Do you have any friends you want to invite to my wedding, Dad?" I broke the silence prevailing around us. "How about you, Mom?" I also asked my stepmom. I jumped from my seat when Daddy suddenly slammed the spoon he was holding onto the plate loudly. "Do you want my friends to laugh and insult me in front of everyone, Raina?" my father asked me angrily. My good intentions suddenly became bad in the eyes of my father. "Do you think everything will be okay because you are going to marry Evo Mondragon, Raina? You have embarrassed not only yourself but also your father. Now people secretly laugh at us, especially your father, because his eldest daughter snatched the fiancé of his youngest daughter. That's what you want, isn't it?" my stepmother said to me. "I've lost my appetite," Daddy stood up abruptly and left the table. Even though he hadn't finished eating, he left the food and went to the living room. I was hurt by what Daddy did. He used to often praise and be proud of me, but I feel that his love for me as a hid child still has reservations. Now it seems like he is just forced to face me because of Evo. He is afraid that Evo will not buy the land he is selling and it will just go to waste. "You deserved Dad's cold treatment, Raina," Rina said to me with a smirk after our father left. "You're a slut. A fiancé stealer. Even if Evo marries you, you won't be happy. Evo loves me and not you. But because of that unlucky child you're carrying, that's why he's marrying you and not me." "You know that it's not my fault, Rina. I had no intention of letting him know about my condition. But because of you, the truth was exposed to him, so your wedding to him didn't happen," I defended myself. "Don't blame my daughter, Raina. Just admit that you're flirtatious like your real mother. And from now on, I don't want to hear you calling me mom. Call me by my name." After my stepmom spoke, she also left the table and, like my father, didn't finish her meal. "Poor, Raina. No one is on your side in this house. You're not a member of our family. No one likes you in this house; if I were you, I'd just kill myself," she taunted me with a grin. Rina laughed loudly and then left me alone at the table. I couldn't stop my tears from falling. She was right. I am just an outsider in this house. I have no ally, not even one. I feel like I'm all alone and without family or relatives. "Sir Evo is outside, Ma'am Rina," I heard the maid Magda say to Rina. "Really? He's surely here for me. Maybe he changed his mind and realized that I'm the one he truly wants to marry," Rina replied excitedly before hurrying out of the house. I tightly closed my eyes. Now I'm having second thoughts about whether my decision to marry Evo was right. But if I don't do it, the baby in my womb will surely be in danger. "Why are you eating alone?" I suddenly opened my eyes when I heard Evo's voice from behind me. I discreetly wiped my tears with my hands before turning to him. "Why are you here?" We didn't have any plans to meet today, so I'm wondering why he's here. "I just wanted to visit my fiancée. Is that bad?" he answered me, then frowned. "Why did you cry? Did they bully you again?" I quickly shook my head at him. "No. I just remembered my real mother, so I got a bit emotional. Not even once did I get to eat with her," I said to him with sadness in my voice. "Don't be sad anymore. Wherever she is now, I'm sure she's happy," he comforted me. It's so sad that other people know how to comfort me, while my own father doesn't. "For you." I stared at a bouquet of flowers he handed to me. Not once have I experienced receiving flowers from anyone. Even my ex-boyfriend never made an effort to give me flowers, not even once. I feel like a warm heart touches my heart by this simple act of him. "For me?" I slightly stuttered as I spoke. It probably wasn't obvious on my face that this was the first time I received flowers. "Yes. For you. And not just that. I have many gifts for you." Evo pulled me and brought me to the living room. My eyes widened when I saw the countless gifts piled up in the living room. "All of these are for you and our future baby." I glanced worriedly at my father. His face was serious, but he didn't seem angry. Maybe he was just holding back his anger in front of Evo. Minerva and Rina did not hide the anger on their faces. "Those gifts should be mine if you hadn't taken Evo away from me, Raina! I really hate you!" Rina shouted angrily at me, her eyes full of envy as she glanced back and forth between me and the gifts. "You're wrong, Rina. I would never send these gifts to you even if you were the woman I was going to marry," Evo quickly countered my half-sister's statement. "I don't believe you, Evo. I know that you would give me more than just those if I were the one you'd marry," Rina insisted. I don't know where she got the courage to speak like that. She's overly confident. "Stop dreaming, Rina. Stop deceiving yourself," Evo said, shaking his head. "I am not—" "Shut up, Rina! Stop embarrassing yourself!" Daddy angrily scolded Rina. It was the first time in my life I saw my dad scolding Rina. Rina started crying and angrily glared at me. "I won't let you become happy, Raina! Remember that!" she threatened before running out of the house. Daddy closed his eyes and when he opened them, he told Evo that he was going to his room because he had a headache. My stepmom followed him. "I think you better go home, Evo. Thank you for what you've given, but next time, please don't bother anymore. You know my situation at home," I pleaded to Evo. "Alright. I'm sorry to make it worse. But if they bully you again, don't hesitate to tell me, okay?" I just nodded in response. After a while, he said goodbye to me. I accompanied him to the door. When he and his two bodyguards were gone, I decided to close the door. But before I could close it, Rina suddenly came in with eyes blazing with anger. "You ruined my dreams! I will kill you, b***h!" I was shocked when she pulled out a two-handspan tall flower pot that had no plant in it, just soil, and smashed it on my head. I didn't expect what she did, so I couldn't dodge. My vision immediately spun and darkened as the flower pot hit my head. I feel the pain in my head and warm liquid flowing down my cheeks. I think I'm going to die now.
