Chapter 17

Raina I woke up when I felt someone stroking my cheek. I immediately remembered the last thing I could recall before losing consciousness. Mr. Wang! I screamed in my mind. Thinking it was him touching me, I suddenly panicked. "Let go of me! You are a shameless monster!" I grabbed the hand that had been caressing my face earlier and bit down hard. "It's me, Evo. You're safe now, Raina." I stopped biting when I heard the voice of the person speaking, none other than Evo. I slowly opened my eyes. I saw Evo grimacing while I was still biting his hand. I immediately let go of his hand once I was sure it was really him I was seeing. "What happened? Where am I? Where is that shameless old man?" I asked Evo in succession. I got up from the bed and sat down, then panicked as I checked my body to see if that old man had succeeded in what he wanted to do to me. "Calm down, okay? Nothing bad happened to you. He didn't succeed in his dark plans against you. It's good that I arrived on time," said Evo. I breathed a sigh of relief when I heard what he said. "And don't worry because that beast won't be able to get out of prison and bother you anymore," he added through gritted teeth. "Thank you for saving me, Evo," I tearfully thanked him. He gently pulled my body and hugged me. "Of course. Wherever you are, I will always come to save you." I couldn't stop my tears from falling. If he hadn't arrived, I would have surely been harmed by the lustful hands of that old man. I remember biting his hand, so I pulled away from his embrace and wiped my tears before checking the hand I had bitten. "I'm sorry. I thought it was Mr. Wang touching me," I apologized to him shyly. The part of his hand that I bit was red and still bore the marks of my teeth. "It's okay. I'll just think that a dog bit me," he joked with a laugh. I rolled my eyes at him and lightly slapped his shoulder because of his joke. Evo just laughed even more at my reaction. I can't help but stare at Evo's face while he's smiling. He is really handsome. And kind too. Even though our marriage is just a marriage of convenience, he protects me like I'm his real wife. Well, if he doesn't protect me, his baby in my womb will also be in danger. Yes. I can say that our marriage is a marriage of convenience because we both need each other. I need him to save my child's life and have someone recognized as a father, while he needs me because of the land he wants to buy. Although I need him more because even if he doesn't marry me, he can still get the land. Daddy also needs money, which is why they are selling that piece of land that is just lying idle. "When I remembered that the juice given to me by Mr. Wang was mixed with medicine, I worriedly asked Evo, "By the way, what did the doctor say? Won't my baby be affected because of the medicine I took?' "You have nothing to worry about because our baby is safe too. If I hadn't brought you to the hospital right away, that's when our baby's health would have been at risk.' I breathed a sigh of relief at what I heard. "It turns out that Mr. Wang's accomplice works at your hotel. I think he was the one Mr. Wang instructed to put medicine in the juice because that old man didn't have time to do it. He was sitting next to me, and I would have seen it if he was the one putting medicine in the juice." "Don't worry about that matter anymore. Because I won't let the hotel's staff get away with what they'd. By the way, do you want to inform your Dad that you're here in the hospital?" I quickly shook my head. "No need. I'm sure he won't come here anyway." I wasn't hurt anymore because I was already used to not being important to my father. Evo just stayed silent and didn't comment on what I said. He respected my decision. And also my feelings. I stayed in the hospital for only one day. The doctor allowed me to be discharged after the medicine I took was cleared from my body. I took a one-week leave to rest properly. I secretly thanked that my mother-in-law only visited the house once, so she didn't constantly criticize me for even small things. After my leave of absence, I returned to work as if nothing happened. The three big bosses of our company who had dinner with Mr. Wang apologized to me. I found out that Mr. Wang was fired from his job and is still in jail now. He deserved it. I started working at the newly constructed building of our client. I didn't have any problems because all the staff treated me well. Only Mr. Wang was really a hindrance to my work being smooth. My work only took a month because the materials I needed arrived quickly. The workers also built the building quickly, so my work was finished faster than I thought it would take two months. There was a small gathering when I finished designing the entire building's interior. I just ate and didn't drink. I told them that I was pregnant, so I couldn't drink, which they immediately understood. "I'm sorry guys. I need to go home early. You know how it is with pregnant women, need to rest early," I said smilingly as I bid them farewell. "Thank you for your help which made my work easier. I hope we can work together again on the next project." "Thank you for the wonderful work cooperation, Ms. Cervantes," replied the project manager who replaced Mr. Wang. After saying goodbye to them, I left the restaurant where we had dinner. My car was parked close to the restaurant, so it only took a few steps to reach it. "What a coincidence, Raina. Fate really brings us together." I paused my attempt to open my car when I heard Greg's voice. When I turned around, I saw him standing close behind me. "Do you need something from me?" I asked him coldly. Since Evo punched him, he hadn't shown himself to me. This is the first time we've seen each other again. I don't know if this is truly just a coincidence or if he intentionally planned this meeting. "Can we talk, Raina?" "We have nothing more to discuss, Greg. Our relationship has long been over," I firmly replied to him. "For you, it's over, but not for me. I know you still love me, and you're just angry with me. That's why you don't want to talk to me." "Where do you get the idea that I still love you, Greg? If I still loved you, I wouldn't hesitate to talk to you," I answered him irritably, then continued opening the door of my car and quickly got inside. Greg tried to open the door but I quickly locked it so he couldn't get in. "I won't give up, Raina. I know we still love each other so I won't give up," I heard Greg say outside my car. But I pretended not to hear and immediately started the car engine then quickly drove away and left him. I let out a deep sigh when I finally got away from my ex-boyfriend. I thought he wouldn't bother me anymore. I hope he comes to his senses so he won't attempt to approach and talk to me again. I don't feel good when he's nearby. It's like he always has something bad planned against me. Or maybe I'm just being paranoid.
