32 One of the first things Wendy had realised after joining the police force was that you should never be surprised by anything. Just when you thought you’d seen it all, something else would pop up when you least expected it and throw a huge spanner in the works. The realisation had stunned her. That Jack Culverhouse could not only have been reluctant to investigate a murder was shocking enough, but not entirely surprising. The possibility that he could have been more directly involved, though, was something else.
