The next day Meredith woke up late as it was close to noon. She felt tired and sore. Her mind was foggy but she remembered some of the things that happened like running and then giving birth. At the thought of her child she immediately sprang up only to groan in pain and looked around. She was in some kind of cave and the fire had gone out. Stretching her hand towards the remaining wood that hadn't burnt down, she used a spell to start the fire, lighting up the cave. She saw her baby in a small basket made from dried grass. She was sleeping peacefully, her golden blonde hair was just like hers.
The smell of meat roasting made her stomach growl as her husband walked inside carrying food for her.
"You're awake." He tried to smile at her but he was finding it hard, especially with what had happened before his wife woke up.
He'd made a decision without letting her know or giving her the choice, but did they have that? In the years he had been alive as a Witcher he'd never heard of a witch giving birth to twins and being allowed to keep both babies. One had to go. But still, these were his children, could he really bear the loss and lie to his wife at the same time? It was just too much unfortunate events happening one after another.
"Where's my sister?" Edith asked as she hadn't seen Clara since she woke up.
"She went to see how far we are from the next land," he lied to his wife which broke his heart. They didn't keep secrets from each other and this was breaking him.
As if on cue Clara came back but she wasn't alone, she held the second child in her arms. Meredith turned to look at her sister, the smile on her face suddenly disappeared when she saw her sister holding another baby. She turned to look at her child that was sleeping before looking back at her sister. The realization of what was happening settled in her mind and terror washed over her, sending shivers through her spine.
"No... no... no, nooooo!" she cried. She couldn't believe this was happening to her, of all things to lose her children? She couldn't believe it.
Simon held his wife as she continued to cry. His eyes met his sister-in-law and she looked away. After much arguing, she and Simon had agreed to do what was needed but she couldn't go through with it. She had gotten to the river but she couldn't do it. It wasn't right that the child had to die because it was forbidden, they didn't ask to be born like this to suffer such ill fate.
Minutes passed before Meredith calmed down. She held her children in both arms, tears welling up in her eyes for the second time. She felt hurt and betrayed that they didn't give her a choice or the chance to see her child. Both children were twins but the second one had black hair like her husband. She didn't want to lose this child, her parents sacrificed their lives for them. An idea suddenly came to her mind, it wasn't what she wanted but it was what she had to do if she didn't want any of her babies drowned.
"Take her with you Clara," she said to her sister without raising her head. She wanted to memorize her children. Clara was thinking the same thing, having the children separated was not easy but it was better than the first plan and she slowly nodded in agreement.
"Okay."
"And you'll call her Aroura." Meredith kissed her daughters. "I love you both so very much, and... I'm so sorry this happened to you, please forgive mommy okay."
Meredith placed a concealment spell on her daughters to hide their witch mark. The spell would only be broken if she died. Her mark was visible which meant her parents were already dead and she'd need to place the spell on herself too.
After resting for a while the family separated with Clara taking the child named Aroura while her sister took the other girl who they named Genevieve, hoping that both girls would not come to cross paths for the disaster that will come to befall because of their birth. Clara decided to stay in Aurelian while the husband and wife took their daughter to the next land after Valcrest, Belmont, with Valcrest being in the middle.
