Chapter 3

The wind howled through the canyon like a wounded beast as Astraia fell toward the rocks below. The icy air whipped past her face, freezing the blood dripping from her shoulder and chest. The black wolfsbane coating Sienna's cross-bolt moved fast—paralyzing her muscles, turning her limbs to lead, and suffocating her lungs from the inside out. Her vision narrowed into a dark, suffocating pinprick. So this is how it ends, she thought, watching the jagged rock walls of the gorge rush upward to meet her. Slaughtered in the dark. Thrown away like trash. A cold, bitter rage ignited in her chest—not against the poison, not against the fall, but against the sheer unfairness of it all. She had spent five long years enduring every insult, every strike, and every ruined meal just to stay alive. She had bled for a pack that treated her like garbage, only to be butchered the second she became inconvenient. Her inner wolf didn't whine or beg for mercy. Deep within her chest, the frozen lock that had shattered during Alphaean’s rejection dissolved completely. The tiny, desperate ember of thermal heat didn't just flicker—it exploded into a blinding furnace. CRACK. The bone-deep sound echoed inside her skull like a lightning strike. Her veins flushed with pure, liquid gold. The wolfsbane invading her organs was instantly burned away, boiled into vapor before it could stop her heart. The jagged cross-bolts lodged in her shoulder melted down into glowing iron, fusing into her skin as her broken ribs snapped back into place with a sickening thud. Astraia opened her eyes. They burned with a luminescent, sun-hot gold. Ten feet before she hit the razor-sharp boulder field, Astraia flipped her body in mid-air. She slammed her boots onto the canyon floor, her landing detonating a thermal shockwave that shattered the surrounding stone into dust and melted the ancient ice into steam. She slowly stood up, her chest heaving as she drew in a deep breath of the sulfurous air. She stared down at her trembling hands. Her skin hummed with a soft, golden radiance, and the silver scar on her collarbone—the mark of Alphaean’s rejection—glowed white-hot, no longer burning her, but feeding her raw energy. Low, guttural growls echoed from the shadows of the gorge. From behind the shattered boulders, towering, grotesque shapes began to emerge. These were the Rogue Scourge—monstrous beasts warped by dark magic, their black fur matted with dried blood, their red eyes fixed on her with mindless hunger. A pack of thirty rogues closed in, snapping their jaws as saliva dripped onto the stone. "Look what fell from the sky," a massive, scar-faced Alpha rogue rasped, his voice like grinding stones. "A little silver-scarred bird. Break her legs. We feast tonight." The beasts lunged, a wave of claws and teeth rushing at her all at once. Astraia took a slow, steady breath. She dropped her weight low into her stance, her boots digging into the loose gravel. Reaching out with her right hand, she pulled on the roaring furnace inside her chest. A blinding flash of golden light condensed in her grip, hardening into a seven-foot blade of raw plasma that hummed violently against the cold air. She moved before the first rogue's claws could touch her. Astraia pivoted on her heel, sweeping the plasma blade in a broad, lethal arc. The beam cut through three beasts at once, cauterizing their flesh and slicing through bone like dry parchment. She ducked beneath the lunging jaws of a fourth, drove her bare, golden-lit left fist straight into its ribs, and unleashed a burst of thermal energy that burned the beast out from the inside. The canyon floor descended into a blur of light and heat. Astraia didn't rely on raw power alone—she fought with the cold, practiced discipline she had perfected over years of watching her enemies train. She ducked under wild swings, used the rogues' heavy momentum against them, and answered every strike with absolute precision. In less than two minutes, the snarling stopped. Astraia stood in the center of the crater, surrounded by steaming ash and shattered stone. The plasma blade slowly dissolved from her grip, fading into faint sparks that sank back under her skin. She panted softly, wiping a smear of dark ash from her cheek as her eyes scanned the quiet gorge. Clap. Clap. Clap. A slow, heavy applause echoed from the high ledge above the crater. Astraia snapped her gaze upward, her heat flaring once more as her posture shifted back into a defensive stance. Descending from the cliffs on a floating slab of dark stone came four elite warriors clad in midnight-black royal armor. Standing at the front was a towering man with a broad frame, sharp features, and obsidian hair dusted with silver at the temples. He wore a heavy mantle of dark fur, and his eyes were a cold, piercing blue. The air around him pressed down with immense, suffocating weight—the unmistakable presence of a supreme ruler. It was King Caelum of the Eternal Citadel. Caelum stepped off the stone platform, his heavy iron boots crunching softly against the ash. His icy eyes swept over the remains of the rogue pack, then locked onto Astraia, stopping ten feet away. "A Solari Lycan," Caelum said, his deep voice cutting through the canyon quiet. "I thought your bloodline was wiped out five centuries ago." Astraia summoned a short, glowing plasma dagger into her right hand, holding it low and ready near her hip. "State your business, King," she said, her voice tight and warning. "Or step into the crater." Caelum didn't reach for his sword. He didn't order his guards to draw their steel. Instead, he slowly pulled back his heavy leather glove, exposing his left forearm. Astraia’s breath hitched. The King’s left arm was not made of flesh and bone. From his knuckles up to his elbow, his skin was composed of solid, gray, lifeless stone—a dark, creeping paralysis that was slowly turning him into a statue. "My business is survival," Caelum replied, his eyes holding her gaze. "My body is turning to stone, and your flame is the only thing in this world that can stop it. Help me break this curse, Solari, and I will give you what you want most." He stepped closer, stopping just inches from the heat radiating off her blade. "I will give you an army to burn the Silver Moon Pack to ash." Astraia stared at the Lycan King, her mind working through the offer, measuring his throne's power against the heat in her blood. Before she could answer, a strange, freezing sensation shot through her left wrist. Astraia looked down. Where the air met Caelum's presence, dark, lifeless veins of gray stone were creeping up her own skin—transferred directly from his aura, rapidly choking out her golden glow. Caelum's face hardened, his eyes narrowing as he took a quick step back. "It's spreading," Caelum whispered, watching the stone climb past her forearm. "The curse... it isn't just killing me. It's hunting you."
