Chapter 4

The gray stone crept up Astraia’s forearm like liquid ice, threatening to extinguish the golden light humming under her skin. Forcing her breathing into a slow, deliberate rhythm, she reached deep into her core and flooded her veins with raw, thermal heat. Blood boiled beneath her flesh, and with a sudden CRACK, the stone casing shattered off her arm, crumbling into harmless dust on the canyon floor. Caelum raised a single eyebrow, a flicker of genuine intrigue breaking through his stoic mask. "Most wolves succumb to the stone aura in seconds." "I am not most wolves," Astraia growled, taking two deliberate steps back. Her golden eyes tracked the three royal guards standing behind him, noting their hand positions and foot placement. "Your curse tries to petrify the atmospheric heat around you. It’s an infectious contagion." "It is a weapon born from the Abyss," Caelum corrected, pulling his heavy leather glove back over his petrified skin. "And every time I use my wolf form, the stone climbs another inch toward my heart. The royal healers give me six months before I become a statue on my own throne. But your Solari flame didn't just resist it—it shattered it." Astraia crossed her arms, keeping her posture guarded. "You mentioned an army." "Forty thousand royal shock-troops, heavy siege artillery, and absolute immunity from pack borders," Caelum said, his voice deep and magnetic. "You want vengeance against the Silver Moon Pack. You want Alphaean and his betrothed to bleed for throwing you away. I can give you the power to tear their fortress down to the dirt." Astraia let out a low, humorless laugh. "And what do you get? Kings don't hand out armies out of the goodness of their hearts." "I get your heat," Caelum replied plainly, stepping closer until the thermal aura off her body radiated against his armor. "I need you at my side as my personal Vanguard Commander. Once a week, you burn the stone from my body. In exchange, my kingdom is your weapon." Astraia’s eyes narrowed. "You want to turn me into a battery for your throne. I just escaped one cage, King. I won't step into another." "It is not a cage; it is a contract," Caelum said. He reached into his fur mantle, pulled out a scroll sealed with dark red wax, and tossed it into the dust between them. "No pack bonds. No forced submission. A pure, cold strategic alliance. You get your revenge, and I get to keep breathing." Astraia looked down at the parchment. Her mind raced, weighing every option. Alone, she was a hunted rogue. With Caelum, she had the backing of the Royal Realm, a mountain fortress to hide in, and an army to crush her enemies without burning herself out. She leaned down, snatched the scroll, and tore the seal open. "Three conditions," Astraia stated, her voice icy. "First, my old mentor Kael—an outcast medic in your lower city—is brought into the inner Citadel under my protection. Second, I answer to no one except you—not your council, not your generals. Third..." She stepped directly into his space, her blazing eyes locking onto his piercing blue gaze. "...when Alphaean falls, his head belongs to me." A razor-thin smirk touched Caelum's lips. "Agreed." He drew a short dagger, cut his thumb, and pressed his bloody print onto the parchment. Astraia summoned a tiny spark of golden plasma to her fingertip, burning a drop of her own blood onto the page beside his. The scroll flashed with purple light as the magic sealed their bargain. "Welcome to the Royal Vanguard, Commander Vance," Caelum said, turning back toward his floating stone transport. "We leave for the Eternal Citadel immediately." Three days later, deep within the Iron Ridge territory, the Great Hall of the Silver Moon Pack was collapsing into utter panic. Alphaean sat slumped on his heavy carved oak throne, his knuckles white as he clutched his own hair. A blinding, agonizing throbbing was hammering against the inside of his skull. Ever since he had sliced the mate mark off Astraia's neck, a foul, burning pain had settled deep inside his chest. It felt as though someone had crammed a fistful of white-hot embers directly over his heart, searing his lungs with every breath he took. "It's just the bond-severing shock, Alphaean," Sienna insisted, her voice tight with suppressed frustration. She paced back and forth near the throne, her fine green silk dress rustling against the stone floor. "The elders said the phantom pain lasts a few days after a forced rejection. You just need to rest!" "It doesn't feel like a phantom pain, Sienna!" Alphaean roared, slamming his heavy fist onto the wooden armrest of the throne, splintering the oak. "It feels like my chest is being eaten alive by fire!" Before Sienna could reply, the heavy iron doors at the far end of the hall burst open with a deafening crash. A young pack scout tumbled into the room, his armor caked in thick brown mud and fresh blood. He scrambled across the flagstones on his hands and knees, collapsing at the base of the throne platform, gasping for air as if his lungs were bursting. "Alphaean! My Lord!" the scout shrieked, his voice cracking with sheer terror. Alphaean sat up straight, his glowing amber eyes wide with fury. "Get up, you sniveling coward! Report! Did your team find the stray's corpse at the bottom of the canyon?" "N-no, My Lord!" the scout stammered, tears cutting clean lines through the mud on his face. "We didn't find her body! But... but our eastern border outpost... Watchtower Seven at the Red Gorge..." Sienna stepped forward, her sharp nails digging into her palms. "What about Watchtower Seven? Speak, boy!" "It's gone, Lady Sienna!" the scout cried out, pressing his forehead against the cold stone floor. "The entire outpost was obliterated! Thirty elite warriors... the iron gates... the stone watchtower... everything was melted!" A dead silence fell over the Great Hall. The surrounding guards froze in place, exchanging terrified glances. "Melted?" Alphaean repeated, his voice dropping into a disbelieving whisper. "Stone doesn't melt. Iron doesn't melt. What kind of rogue ambush did this?!" "It wasn't a rogue ambush, My Lord!" the scout sobbed, reaching into his bloody leather pouch with shaking fingers. He pulled out a piece of scorched, blackened parchment that was still wafting faint wisps of white smoke. "There were no survivors! Just... just this note left pinned to the melted iron gates!" Alphaean lunged forward, snatching the scorched paper from the scout's hand. He unrolled it with trembling fingers. Written across the charred surface in glowing, golden ash that burned without consuming the paper were four simple, elegant words: I AM COMING HOME. The moment Alphaean finished reading the message, the burning sensation in his chest exploded into an apocalyptic flare of agony. He let out a strangled gasp, dropping the parchment as he collapsed sideways off his throne, hitting the stone floor hard as he clutched his heart, cold sweat drenching his clothes. "Alphaean!" Sienna shrieked, rushing to his side. She looked down at the parchment lying in the dust. The golden ash was still glowing brightly, pulsing with a terrifying, sun-hot thermal signature that made the surrounding air shimmer with heat. Suddenly, a high-pitched, terrifying whisper echoed directly inside Sienna's mind—a dark, ancient voice that no one else in the room could hear. She survived the fall, my little vessel, the Abyss Warlord hissed softly inside her skull, laughing with dark delight. The trash you tried to bury has dug her way out. And she isn't coming back as a beggar... she is marching with the Stone King.
