Anna
Young girl four years old with bright red curls running through the fields playing in the sun with her brother and sisters. We all know that story and the smile it brings to our faces, well I am sorry, but this is not that story.
As a young girl Ramey always knew that her life would be difficult. Her mother finally made it to the United States just before she was born while WW2 was in full swing. Her mother liked to be called anna but her name was Nevena but she didn’t want anyone to know where she was from. Anna was born and raised on a small farm in Bulgaria. She was young and in love with Georgi and was settling down to start her family. Georgi was enlisted in the Bulgarian military and made a decent wage but nothing you could get rich over.
Anna was on her way home from the local market in late august of 42’ when she was told that she was no longer allowed to shop at the local market. Anna was so distraught and rang in disbelief that she couldn’t contain it she stopped by her parents’ home, and they informed her that not only would she no longer be able to go to the market but there were more restrictions placed on her because of her religion.
Anna through Georgi that there was a lot of bad stuff going on, but she was in disbelief because even though Bulgarian military had to permit German forces to pass through Bulgaria to attack Greece through the tripartite pact, she thought the war had ended in April of 41 when the Greek government had surrendered. She was wrong and now she knew it Georgi had not only let her believe that there wasn’t any worry going on but that this war was simple and would be over in the blink of an eye. Even though Bulgaria did not join the German invasion of the Soviet Union in June of 41 or declare war for that matter they were just there to thwart potential threats from turkey and Greece.
Anna tried to keep her spirits up and she cried all night long because not only did she feel lied to, but her parents informed her that her people were now being treated so cruel. Anna didn’t know what to do she just found out a week earlier that she was pregnant that is the whole reason for the market visit. Georgi was due home and she wanted to make his favorite meal kapama even thinking about the meal made her mouth water. She had it all planned out kapama with tarator and shopska salad. He would come home to the display and know that she loved him. She would help him clean up and as they would finish the meal, she would tell him the good news and he would jump for joy run to her and kiss her with so much passion the angels themselves would blush, but now how was she to give him this great news when he has kept her in the dark like that. How was she to give birth at a time like this.
Anna feeling so broken she decided to keep it to herself for now.
As Anna laid in the bed waiting for sleep to come for her, she couldn’t help but to feel a sad and great remorse for how she felt toward her husband right now. She loved him since the moment they met. They met through her church she always had a love for her country and felt that the country loved her back, but how could they? How could they love her when in their eyes she was part of the problem? Before she knew it, she drifted off to sleep.
Loud noises. What are those? Bombs !!! she saw woman and children screaming and crying, huddled together in the corner. Blood pouring from their bodies as they held each other holding on for dear life. Men shouting at them pointing rifles barking orders (what did they want? what does this mean?) she couldn’t believe what she saw her neighbor Stephan forcing young kids to the ground and holding a rifle above them telling their parents to get on the train to leave. Where are they going?
A loud noise rang through the streets, and she realized through the painful screams of their mom that Stephan had indeed shot both children in the head. He didn’t even let their parents hold the bodies one last time with a swift kick to the lifeless kids he smiled with content and turned his attention to the parents. They don’t notice they are so blinded by what just happened he is now turning the weapon on them. I can’t hold it in any longer Anna let out a scream and they looked at me realizing that they were next, but now Stephan has noticed her, she turned to run but ran straight into a German soldier and he pulled the trigger instantly.
Anna jolted awake realizing that it was a dream and she needed to make sure that if this was some sort of proficiency that she would not be there to witness that she needed Georgi and her family, and they needed to leave like yesterday. Where would she go? There were rumors that the United States were taking people in, but the wait times were long and chances slim. She didn’t care that dream may have been just a dream, but it shook her she need to go.
She checked the mail and was instantly excited a letter from her love. Finally he will let me know the exact day he was going to be here and we can go.
