Arthur’s POV
Sia and I went to dinner on one of my yachts. I love the ambiance here and that was where our first date with my fiancée happened. We just eat and I love to stare at her because it reminds me of Margaret. I miss her so much. I don’t want her to know the real reason I invited her for dinner.
After the accident, Margaret’s parents decided to take her medication in Japan, and they didn’t want me to visit her in Japan. That was why I couldn’t do anything about it. I understand, because I was the one to blame for why it happened. I was driving so fast that I didn’t see that damn truck.
Alvin came into the room and said that I had a phone call, and it was urgent. I see how shocked Alvin was when she saw Sia personally.
“Wow, you really looked like her.” Alvin was so amused.
“I’m sorry?” Sia said while looking confused.
“What is it?” I asked Alvin to change the topic.
He leaned at me and whispered that it was Margaret’s mom.
I excused myself then signaled Alvin to drive Sia home.
“But wait… will I ever get to see you again? Like another dinner?” Sia asked.
“I don’t think so. Dinner is over,” I said in a haughty tone.
I answered the phone and heard Margaret’s mom crying.
“Hello, Mrs. Green? Why? What happened?” I asked her mom.
My heart was beating so fast that I didn’t even know what to do. I didn’t want her to say any words because I was scared of what I was going to hear. Why is she crying? Did something bad happen to Margaret? Why am I so scared?
“Arthur…. Maggie is dead,” her mom said and started to cry harder.
“…..” I didn’t even know what to say. There were no words coming out of my mouth.
“We tried everything, but Maggie couldn’t take it anymore,” her mom continued.
“I’ll fly there, please Mrs. Green, let me meet her one last time,” I begged her.
“We’ll wait for you at the funeral,” she said.
I hung up the phone and collapsed on the floor. What the f**k did just happen? My fiancé, my future wife, my everything is now gone? What did I do to deserve this? How am I supposed to live now?
I lay on the floor for a while when I heard footsteps coming in.
Sia showed up. Why was she still here? I told Alvin to take her home.
“Arthur, why are you on the floor?” Sia said. I could hear how worried she is.
“Margaret is dead,” I uttered and started laughing, then crying, repeat.
“I’m so sorry to hear that, but who’s Margaret?” Sia asked me. Why the hell was she so invested in me?
I did not answer her, and she just helped me get up and rubbed my back. I don’t want anyone to see me like that.
“Just go home. I don’t need you here,” I frankly said to her.
“Umm.. yes, I just forgot my purse inside. That’s why I headed back here. I’m so sorry. I didn’t intend to see you like that,” she explained. Then she went inside to get her bag.
I didn’t wait for her to come out and just walked straight to my car.
“Ready our plane, Alvin. We’re flying to Japan,” I stated after I saw Alvin get in the car as well.
“But how about our business here, sir? We still have meetings to attend,” Alvin said.
“Is that really what’s important to you? Huh? My fiancée died. For f**k’s sake! Alvin, I need to see her one last time! Can’t you just do what I say?!” I couldn’t control myself and yelled at him.
“I’m sorry, I’ll get the plane ready, Mr. But for now, let’s go back to the hotel to pack your things,” he said.
The next day, Alvin escorted me to our private plane. My heart raced the entire time. On the plane, I couldn’t sleep or eat because all I wanted was to see her as soon as possible. I wished I could ask the pilot to fly faster.
“Mr. Wilson, you need to eat something,” Alvin uttered, then served me the food.
“I don’t want to,” I refused.
“How long until we get there?” I asked him instead.
“Two hours more,” he answered.
“I’ll just eat once we land,” I mouthed.
We have finally arrived in Japan. I immediately went to Margaret’s funeral. Her mom’s slap welcomed me. She was crying and you could see in her eyes that she was crying the whole night. I get it. Margaret is their only daughter. I would accept if they resented me so much.
They chose to cremate her body, so I didn’t get a chance to see her physically.. I was on my knees the whole time.
All our memories flashed back to me. Alvin handed me his handkerchief, as I was also sobbing. This was the first time many people saw me crying. All of Margaret’s friends and family were there.
“Arthur, I thought you'd not go to show up,” Timothy jokingly said. He was a family friend and very close to us both.
“Are you serious? It’s my fiancée’s funeral,” I said, then punched him lightly.
“She was actually waiting for you the whole time at the hospital. She was only saying your name, Bro,” Timothy got serious.
I became so silent after what Timothy said. It was my fault. I should’ve been there for her. We should’ve fought together.
A week later, Margaret’s burial happened. My dad called me to go back to California to continue taking care of our business there. I told my dad that I would just stay here in Japan for a month.
I took all my time to heal, and a month after I went back to California, I gave Alvin a month off too, because he deserved it. So I went back alone.
At the airport, I saw her, Sia. She was waving her hand and holding a sign that said ‘Welcome back, Mr. I don’t smile’ That was kind of cringe, but okay. I walked towards her and she welcomed me with a smile.
“Welcome back, it’s been a while,” she said happily. I don’t know, but it made me smile a bit, knowing that someone was waiting for me. But how did she know I was coming back?
