Chapter Four: Freedom?

915 Words
Five years later…. “Young miss” a girl said with a low bow the moment Leila came out of her room dressed in her running outfit. “Master requests your presence in his study” she added hurriedly, knowing if she wasn’t fast enough, Leila would be out of there before she could even say a word. “I’ll be there shortly.” She said curtly and left the maid servant. She looked around, wondering why Kyle, her right-hand man, was not there already as she made her way to Bastian’s study. Anyone that had stayed long enough to know why the vampires had grown to a point why every other supernatural creature feared them would know the man seated on the high chair the moment Leila opened those mahogany doors. “You didn’t sleep well again,” Bastian commented as Leila entered. His tone was scolding but his eyes, however, reflected pure worry and doting. “I tried my best.” “I have sent some of my men to help you find the best herbs to help you curb your nightmares.” Despite her lack of good sleep, Leila was glowing. At the age of twenty-two, her whole body had developed rightly and he had to admit that there was no one yet to walk the earth that looked as good as she did. Several times, he had issued punishments to his men because of how they stared at her or made passes at her till it became something they couldn’t do and no matter how many times they gossiped about his interest in her, Bastian turned a deaf ear to it. “When are you planning the attack and what’s your core strategy for taking him down?” Bastian asked, his gaze deep like he was peering into her soul. “So soon?” Leila muttered, her fists clenching tightly at the memory of that man that was ingrained in her memory. Alpha Dante… “So soon? It’s been five years, Leila. And the only way you get to have your life is to make sure that this man is out of this world. You can also take over his power.” He paused as he took in her hesitant look, knowing that he couldn’t push her too much. “Leila, the man that made your father and mother die all because of some power struggle, roams free. He would not only kill you if you are weak, he’s also taking out more clans day after day.” He added, watching her fists clenched tightly as a look of satisfaction crossed his face. “Give me one more week, I’ll increase the training on my pack members. However, our agreement that no vampire from your clan can follow along still stands, Bastian.” Bastian chuckled as he took in her resolute expression and nodded his head in satisfaction. “I know you would understand how important this is.” Leila bowed slightly and left his study. When he had saved her, he had told her very clearly that he was saving her only because he wanted her to take due revenge on Dante, battered and helpless. Leila at the time had agreed willingly. Leila’s brows furrowed in dissatisfaction when she walked into the training grounds and so that all her pack members were sitting and relaxed. She looked around for Kyle, wondering why he wasn’t there, since he hadn’t been at her apartment when she woke up. “Thirty laps round the grounds” she commanded icily, her voice startling the relaxed shifters. “Alpha, we were waiting for you.” One of her pack men said as he guessed that she was angry, judging from her angry face. “Waiting for me? We would be going for our hardest battle in a week against the Shadownight clan and you want to wait for me to train?” Her words were not only cold, they were shocking as everyone of them looked between each other in surprise. The plan was to set out in about three months. “Bastian has requested we move out next week. If we are going to take Dante down considering his manpower, then you had better know to start training without me.” She wanted to say more but Kyle’s figure that appeared from the other end of the grounds made her halt in her speech. He was shirtless and sweaty, a sign that he had most likely woken up early to train. “Max, make sure everyone runs their thirty laps without any excuse.” She commanded and jogged over to where Kyle was coming from. Although he was her right-hand man and Bastian taught her about leadership and hierarchy every time, Kyle was also like her best friend. The only person she could really talk with. “What’s up?” She asked as soon as they met halfway. Now that he was up close, she could see that there was something bothering him. “I saw that Bastian requested your presence and felt you would spend some time there, so I went for a run.” Kyle explained amidst his heavy breathing. “No Kyle, that’s not what I’m asking. I’m asking what’s wrong with you.” Kyle looked at her, his gaze steady and also filled with pain, and Leila allowed him to take his time as seconds went into minutes before he finally spoke up. “There was another attack, Leila.”
