I woke up from the best sleep I had in ages. Keeping my eyes closed, I turned around, feeling the soft cotton sheets underneath me. This woke me up in an instant. My sleepy eyes drifted from one side of the room to the other, only to rest on the handsome alpha sleeping on the couch next to me. Memories of the past night invaded my mind. I can't believe I lost to some group of weaklings. I swung my legs over the edge of the bed. Bruises were seen all over my legs. Luckily most were already fading. I tried to stand, ignoring the sharp pain it caused. The sleeping alpha was snoring softly. He almost looked cute. I shuffled over to the door, which opened without making any sound. Closing it behind me, I made my way through the unknown corridors without having an idea where to go to. I could go back to the shed and resume my sleep? But what if the warriors came back to finish what they started? Even though it was not likely, because of the interference of their alpha, there was no way I would take that risk. I roamed around the house for what felt like hours, avoiding every person on my path until finally, I found something to stick around for. A door, made of a different kind of wood than the others. It was engraved with some fancy lines and curls where the others were plain and simple. I opened the door and stepped into a gym-like room. It appeared to be empty besides some mats on the floor and some weird looking cabinets. I walked over to the cabinets. The details on the cabinet doors matched the ones on the door. I opened the small doors and became surprised to see electronics. There were wires and buttons everywhere yet a bigger green one pulled my attention. I pressed it and jumped when a loud screeching sound echoed through the room. I turned around, ready to fight whatever would come my way but found out the button led to another door. A hidden closet. "Well, that's just a poor way to hide a hidden door." I walked over there to see it being filled with weapons. Was this room supposed to be an armory? My fingers slid over the weapons, one by one until they stopped on a collection of knives. They were beautiful. The handle was embedded with little blue gems. I grabbed one in my hand to test the sharpness. It was perfect, even better than mine. I took a step back to look at it in a better light when my elbow hit something hard. A loud bang sounded across the room, making me throw the knife at the sound. It struck right into a practice dummies' head. Another sound revealed another dummy that disappeared after a few seconds. I turned around to grab the rest of the collection. Practice it is. It took me a while but the system became clearer eventually. The dummies appeared and disappeared more frequently making it harder to hit the target. I closed my eyes and tried to rely on my other senses. Still, I was able to hit all of the targets. I tried it a couple of times before increasing the speed. It was when I threw the first knife, that I felt another presence. I pretended to ignore the person while ending the training. I made sure that the last knife was aimed at the person by the door. A gasp made me open my eyes with a smirk. The knife was only a centimeter from his face, buried into the doorpost. There he was, my mate, looking pale as if he saw a ghost. "You know you have to breathe to live right?" I placed the knives back where they belonged before turning around with crossed arms. He recovered and pulled the knife out of the wood. "These knives were a gift from my grandma. She brought them with her from her trip to Kasjmir. These stones are sapphires. The handles, handmade by an old friend of hers. She gave me this collection when I turned 14 years old. She told me to save these for my future mate so I guess they're yours now if you want." He twisted the blade between his thumb and index finger without giving me a single look. Even though the knives were a perfect match for me, there is no way I could accept such a rare gift. "You know why I can't be your mate. I'm just not fit for it and besides, there is a war going on. After the war, you should find another luna for the pack. Give these to someone who deserves them." These words hurt a lot more than I would like to admit but I knew I made the right choice. The chances of survival were slim for me as I would do anything to damage the elders. They needed to be stopped as soon as possible. I walked past him and went to open the door. "I will be outside if you need me. Just tell your warriors to stop attacking me please." I never waited for an answer. I took the first door on my right and was relieved to see the outside world again. Being inside made me feel trapped. I breathed in the cold air as I searched for the way back to the stable. I saw some kids running around while grownups were chatting underneath some trees. The calm before the storm, I told myself as I kept on walking. Memories of our homeland crawled to the surface as I saw my sister and I run around a gigantic tree in the middle of the park. That's when I made the vow to myself to search Emily up the next day. I laid down on some hay and missed the luxury of having a bed. How could one night spoil someone so much, I wondered when I drifted to a sleep full of nightmares and terrors.

I was tired and all sweaty. Our master trained us for over 12 hours. He claimed that an assassin needs to be ready for anything. I hated it. I hated everything and everyone here, except for my friend Rose. She was the only one I had besides my little sister. They just told me she died yesterday. Apparently, she was killed in battle. Rose was there to cheer me up every day. Today was no different. She told me everything was going to be fine. People would come in and save us all. She told me that her aunt and uncle lived far away and that if we were to escape, they would take care of us. I believed her. She was my last hope. We prepared for days, using the techniques from the lessons the elders gave us. We were so sure we would make it. We waited for nightfall, hoping for the cover of darkness. Rose made sure to spice some food of the guards with wolfsbane making them throw up. We picked the lock of the dungeon door and tried to pursue some other kids to join us. Some did while others were too afraid. The cobbled stones were cold underneath our feet. We shuffled against the walls while always cautious not to raise suspicions. We opened the last door of the building just as the alarm was triggered. The wolfsbane must have worn out already. At this point, we just ran. We ran towards the gate as it was the only thing separating us from freedom. Jack was there first. He grabbed onto the fence. That was where everything went wrong. The fence was charged with electricity. He died in an instant, making Rose and I, along with some others stop in our tracks. I yelled to run along the fence. I had hoped to find some hole or anything else to help us escape. We were stopped by some guards in front of us. I turned around to see more coming. We were surrounded. s**t. The guards just stood there. Nobody said a thing. We were just waiting. Waiting for someone to arrive and when she did, I knew we were all screwed. The guards parted to reveal the smiling elder woman. Why is she always smiling? "Who is responsible for this act of treason?" I did what felt right and took the blame on me. I had nothing left to lose anyway. She stepped closer to me, grabbing my chin with her hand. "I see no fear in your eyes, just acceptance. You are not afraid to die. That makes you valuable my child. You are not the initiator." Before I knew what was happing, she spun around and grabbed a gun from one of the guards. She aimed it at Rose before firing. The bullet went straight through her left eyes. It created an exit wound at the back of her skull. I ran to her side to catch her when she lost balance. Her right eye full of shock while her left eye was nothing more than a bleeding hole. Her eyes lost their liveness as she passed away in my arms. My best friend, the only one I had left, had left me now. I just hoped she would go to a better place. To her parents in heaven. The elder woman raised my attention by clicking her tongue. "well, don't you keep standing here, back to the cells. This is what happens when you disobey us." She turned around while throwing the gun onto the ground. Time slowed down. I dived onto the ground to grab the gun. I loaded it before aiming it at her back, ready to shoot. I pulled the trigger and... Nothing happened. The woman raised her hand to drop the bullets she extracted from the gun earlier. "I do admire your courage, my daughter. I see you tomorrow." With that, she disappeared. The guards pulled me up and made sure that everyone got back to their cells. Everyone except Rose............
