Chapter1
Chapter 1: Sam slowly opened her eyes, dizzling in her surroundings. She was surprised to see herself on the hospital bed, surrounded by machines that are beeping and a white colored walls with other people facing one sickly issue or the other. A faint memory of a car accident lingered in her mind, but the details were blurry. As she tried to sit up, she felt a sharp pain shot through her head, forcing her to lay back on the bed. A nurse came into the room, smiling sympathetically. "Oh, Sam, you are finally awake. You have been with us for a few days. Don't worry, everything would be fine, you're going to be okay." Sam noticed a phone on her bedside table. She needed to call her husband, Ken, and her best friend, Jane. They would be worried sick about her. But as she reached for the phone, the nurse gently stopped her. "I'm afraid you need to rest, Sam. You're not fully recovered yet. Besides, your best friend was here yesterday, who are you trying to call? Your husband? I’m sure he will be here soon” Then a doctor arrived and murmured some words to the nurse to inform Sam about her guardian signing some document and also to deposit some amount of money or else, they would have no choice but to discharge her. Sam's anxiety increased . Why isn’t Ken or Jane responding to their call and text messages? She tried to push the thoughts aside, focusing on her recovery. But as the hours ticked by, her unease grew. Finally, the nurse helped Sam get dressed and discharged her from the hospital. Sam's heart sank as she realized neither Ken nor Jane was there to pick her up despite trying their number severally, She hailed a cab and headed home. While enjoying the cool breeze different from the hospital environment Memories of the past flooded her mind and she became sad, struggling to control her emotions. She remembered how she was tortured and tormented by her mother-in-law who supported her son's nonchalant attitude, who she helped get away with every one of his mischievous deeds whenever she tried to correct him. She would remind her that he is the husband of the house and she must be submissive regardless of whatever her husband must have been doing. “But why would he stop working without informing me” Sam asked, we are meant to support each other and inform each other before making decisions, and important decisions at that” Ken sneered at her “But you earn higher than me and even in a higher position than I am, you should be capable of taking responsibility for the house till I figure out whatever I want to do, and as of now, I’m investing in stock, so stop with your ridiculous question and cook something for us to eat’. Her mother-in-law was smiling sarcastically at what her son was saying and urging him to come and sit down and not to be bothered by his wife's words. Back then, those words stabbed at her tearing her heart apart cruelly As she stepped into her apartment, she felt something was off. She called out for Ken, but there was no response. That's when she saw it – strange black heels were placed in front of the door separated from each other like the owner was in haste to get into the house and a flowered pattern skimpy white gown on the couch that she was certain it didn't belong to her, pink laced underwear intertwined with a pair white boxers she got for her husband few months before the accident she had. The position of the shows the kind of event that must have happened in the house, she won’t be naive enough not to understand the scenario in the bedroom. The sound from the bedroom was enough to clear her doubt. The moan of the familiar voice erotically called for her husband. “Ken..Ken..hmm, Ken” the woman’s voice called out softly The response was a series of deep heavy breaths from her husband This is the man she has been anxious and worried about for not responding to his calls, he doesn’t even look like he would get prepared in the next thirty (30) minutes. Sam's heart began to pound as she approached the bedroom and the strange sounds coming from inside made her blood run cold. She slowly turned the handle and pushed the door open. The scene before her was the most shocking sight she had ever seen. The face of the familiar voice, she knew it very well, she had been seeing that face since she was in college. JANE ANDREW!! Her best friend!! Yes, she was the one, she wasn’t wrong to realize the voice sounded familiar. Ken and Jane were tangled together on the bed getting intimate, their faces twisted in a mixture of shock and guilt. Sam's world came crashing down around her. She wanted to run away like she has always been doing whenever she is faced with troubles but she summoned the courage to face them. Disappointment and heartache engulfed her, she was let down by the person she had always trusted with her entire life, and she was broken and shattered to piece "You...you're cheating on me and Ja…janeeeeee?" Sam's voice trembled with rage and hurt. Tears slid down her cheek and she trembled with pain and she started things she could lay her hands on at them Was she dreaming? She had to be dreaming. Otherwise, why would her best friend, the person she trusted and always confided in, betray her like this? Ken scrambled to defend himself as well as Jane, but Jane just smirked, her eyes glinting with malice and not feeling remorseful. The room erupted into chaos as Sam confronted them. In the heat of the moment dragging each other hair and clothes with Ken trying to separate them, Jane pushed Sam hard, which made her stumble backward and fall onto a glass table. “You think you are perfect; you have everything I ever wanted, you are always getting everything I ever wanted for myself, you are wicked and you call yourself my friend,” Jane said She hated the fact that Sam had always been ahead of her and now she was even successful working as an assistant manager while she on the other hand was begging to be a full staff at the same company and she was dating a tall handsome young man She hated how Sam was always acting innocent and turning blind to some of her mischievous acts toward her, She hated the fact that Sam was hardworking and workers praised and acknowledged her “I think she is dead, she will die eventually, I was surprised she could get home herself, we are going to report that she stumbled and fell, she hasn't fully recovered from the fatal accident, the police would believe us and we would get her insurance payment,” Ken said with a smile on his face. The sound of shattering glass in a pool of blood and Sam's scream were the last things she remembered
