Something to tell

1075 Words
It was the middle of the night when she woke up. The whole room is covered by darkness but that doesn't stop her from maneuvering to the balcony to get some air. Her chest feels tight, as if she's suffocating. So she closed her eyes, and let the night air blows to her face. Suddenly, she felt a pair of arms wrapping her from the back, emitting the warmth to her on the chilly night. "You'll catch a cold," he sighed, leaning to her as he looked at the view. "Why are you up?" "Because you're up," he muttered, answering her. "Whatever happens tomorrow, I'm by your side, all the way," he assured her. She found herself turning to meet his eyes. Her arms hung around his neck, and they stayed like that for a good moment.  "hmm," she hummed, with a small smile.  Elaine opened her eyes, a frown in on her face as she groaned to the pillow. Another dream? How annoying! Who the hell are they, and why does she have to keep on getting that dream? It's been the third time she had that dream, and it's bothering her. Call her salty since she's as single as ever, but she's truly not in the mood for any of these. She had so many other things she would rather think about. She turned to get her phone on the nightstand, and a message from an unknown number caught her eyes. She contemplated about it, but she chosen to not look at it now. Instead, she opened an app, wanders around for a while until she'd grown tired and fell asleep. The next morning, They all gathers on the kitchen. Lena is making them breakfast, and Elaine accepted it happily. Her phone vibrated, and she noticed an unknown number is calling her. Her forehead frowned, and she contemplated whether she should answer it or not. She passed a glance to her aunt and uncle, and decided to give it a go, just to see who it is. "Hello?" "Ms. Harris," Elaine stiffened upon hearing the name. "I'm Ed Farrel, lawyer to old Mr. Harris. Do you have a minute?" Though she didn't expect he would have her number, she wasn't a bit surprised reminding his capabilities. Elaine cleared her throat, "Yes. How may I help you Mr. Farrel?" Upon hearing the name, Uncle Jack turned his head to stare at her. Mr. Farrel? Why did he contact her, why does she looked uncomfortable? He paid more attention to their conversation. "Mr. Harris had requested everyone to gather as part of his will. The event would took place by the end of this month, just the same as the day to his memorial. I'm hoping you could attend, miss," the lawyer informed her as Elaine sighed. "I don't see why I should be there, Mr. Farrel. The will is for family members only," Elaine responded. Either she'd forgotten that they're there, or doesn't really care. Lena is now staring at her in shock and wonder. "The will stated that every living family members by bloodline are required to be present, miss Elaine. I'll make sure you'll receive more information. Have a good day," he told her, then ended the call right away. Elaine tried to keep herself from scoffing. If he's not going to give her an option, why ask? Why not tell her straight away? She found these kind of people extremely annoying. And even if she didn't come, what would've happened? The worst that could happen is her losing her part of inheritance, and she doesn't give a damn about that. It's not like she needs it. "Why did you have a fall out with the family?" Uncle Jack asked her. "It's fine uncle," Elaine smiled. "Due to our differences, I just figured that it's best for everyone if I'm not around." "Oh honey," Lena grabbed her hand. "When did this happen?" Jack asked, and Elaine answered with no second thought, as if she remembered it as clear as day- which she did. "Right before my eighteenth birthday." As if knowing what they'd be thinking Elaine adds, "Besides, there's no way I could find you guys. You're hundred of miles away. And I'm perfectly fine, Aunt. You shouldn't worry," she assured her. "There's this thing called the internet, Elaine. And you didn't even tell us when we met a few years ago," Lena complained, as Elaine gave her a smile. Lena has always treated her so lovingly, even as a child, though she couldn't remember much of it. "You left the house empty handed," Jack suddenly concluded, looking at Elaine as she slowly nods. It made sense, since there's no way she'd be memorizing each and every contact she has on her phone. He recalled sending a text to her old number, and receiving a reply. But based on her statement, she wasn't the one who'd replied him. And the phone calls that always go unanswered now made so much sense. Her phone vibrated, and she glanced at it. While she's not looking, Lena and Jack exchanged a look. Doubt visible on Lena's eyes, and Jack nodded at her reassuringly, as if telling her 'it's necessary.' "Elaine," uncle Jack called her. On her screen appeared a text that said :  'Ferris Hotel Function Hall. Dinner, 1x.0x.20xx. Would you'd like to be prepared the accommodation, or stay at the old manor? You should stay the night because the legals are going to be handled first thing the next morning. Please have your schedule cleared.' "Yes Uncle?" Elaine responded to Jack, was about to ignore the text when another text enters. 'Should you not appear, the will reading will be canceled, and held back to another date. I know you'd think of not appearing last minute, but I'm under strict orders. I hope you understand Miss Elaine. I can't undo a dead man's words, especially not one that's written in a piece of paper, signed, stamped, and legalized.' She wanted to roll her eyes at him for being extra, but she too understand that he did what he had to do. He was right, she did think of not appearing as she'd ignore the text. "I have something to tell you," Uncle Jack said. "What is it uncle?" Elaine responded, after pressing sent to a reply the noisy lawyer. But what uncle Jack told her, had shocked her to the core. 270121
