On the morning of May 14, 1948, the streets of Tel Aviv overflowed with excitement and celebrations among the Jewish settlers. The blue-and-white flag fluttered atop the buildings, and the official announcement echoed throughout the city:
> "Today, the State of Israel is proclaimed."
