Two days came and went quickly. It was now Saturday night, and I was lying on the bed waiting for whatever was going to happen to unfold. As I lay and looked up at the cracking ceiling, I couldn't help but think of my life up until this point. Like, what have I done to deserve these things? Having lived such an average life, then for it all to get snatched away in the blink of an eye was still a hard pill to swallow.
I still miss my parents and siblings, even though I know they don't think of me anymore. I will never forget the last time they all came to visit me as a family. My dad used to bring my siblings to see me every few weeks at first, but then as time went on, visits became more spread out until my 17th birthday, when everything came crashing down.
**********Flashback**********
"Marks! You have a visit!" an orderly yelled out over the loudspeaker. I jumped up excited! It was my 17th birthday, and I knew my dad had come with my siblings. Unfortunately, I haven't seen my mother since the night my family let the hospital come and take me away. It hurts, but I appreciate my dad for at least making an effort. Maybe this will turn out to be a good birthday after all!
I ran to my bathroom and tried to make myself look presentable. I looked in the mirror at my hair, which sat in a messy bun on top of my head. It is hard to upkeep your hair correctly with the flimsy combs they give us here. I splashed some water on my face and redid my bun into a ponytail. I guess this is the best it's going to get. I smoothed my pants and walked out of the room.
I walked down the long hall toward the visitor's room. I was nervous, and my stomach was turning. Do you know what a good birthday gift would be? If they showed up here to tell me they were taking me home! Yes, that would be the best present, I thought. As I neared the visitor's room, I spotted my family sitting together at a table. I stopped in my tracks, stunned. My mother was with them. Maybe they indeed are coming to get me; I thought to myself as I made my way over to my family.
As I reached the table, no one got up but my little sister Maddie, who ran into my arms. She gave me the biggest hug ever. "Ease up, baby sis, I missed up too," I chuckled as I hugged her back. "Mom! Long time no see!" I said, excited to see her. She gave me a weak smile, "Mylay, come, sit, we have some things to talk about, and look, we've brought you a cake," mom said, pointing to a round, covered container in the middle of the table. I smiled and sat down, excited about some homemade double chocolate cake.
The conversation with my family seemed dry. Everyone seemed so distant. "So, Miles, how's school going? Are you having any luck with the ladies?" I inquired, trying to get some conversation out of my little brother. He just shrugged his shoulders, looking down at his lap. Clearly, whatever was in his lap was more important than having a conversation with his sister he hadn't seen in over five months! At this point, I started to get irritated. What are they even here for if they aren't bringing me home? They could at least speak!
An hour finally came, and I had to admit the visit kind of dragged. We stood up to leave, "Well, thanks for coming for my birthday, guys! I was kinda hoping you guys were coming to take me home, hahaha," I chuckled nervously to my family. My mom and dad looked at each other, then at me. "That's actually what we wanted to talk to you about. You won't be coming home, Mylay," my mom stated matter of factly. "Please, I need to get out of here. How much longer until I can come home? It's already been a year!" I begged my parents.
My father finally spoke up and said, "no, you don't understand, Lay, you won't be coming to our home ever again. The hospital has taken guardianship over you until you turn 21. Then they will reassess your condition to see if you need more care or if you can be integrated back into society. We-" My mother cut him off and said, "either way, you won't ever be coming back to our home. We tried our best, we really did, but you are mentally ill, child. There isn't much else we can do for you... Come everyone; it is time to go home." "H-How could you d-do this to me?" I managed to stutter out in between sobs.
My mother turned around and stared at me with a look of indifference and said, "We have to worry about OUR children. We have taken care of you your whole life; even now, we have been paying for you to be here up until this point. We cannot carry this burden any longer. We have our REAL children to worry about. We really do wish you the best. Take care, Mylay." I stood there stunned, and with that, they turned around and walked out of my life forever.
***********End of Flashback**********
"Are you ready, pet?" said Alpha Damon, pulling me from my reverie. I just stared at him in disgust as he roughly grabbed me by my arm and pulled me to stand up. "I have a present for you," he said as he slapped a heavy, cold collar around my neck. The moment it locked shut, I tried to rip it off, and it immediately burned my neck. "Ahh, what the hell is this?" I screamed as the collar dug into my neck, making a sizzling sound. I could literally smell my flesh burning. "It's my insurance policy; now let's go!" Damon retorted as he pulled me to the door and out of the house.
As I stood out in the darkness, I saw a small army. About 30 men, and another 10, I am assuming, were men in their wolf form, standing waiting for the commands. "Okay, everyone, I and our lovely secret weapon here will be taking a truck while the rest of you will run in wolf form to the Half-Moon pack. We should get there in around 30 minutes. It's the closest pack to take over. We have a special friend who will meet us there and will activate our secret weapon. We must creep up quietly. Wait for my mind-link for further instructions once we get there. Now move out!" Damon bellowed out to everyone standing out on the lawn.
I slid into the back of a beat-up Ford truck. Damon hopped into the passenger seat as a tall, muscular man with a buzz cut and a lousy attitude got into the driver's seat. We were riding for about 25 minutes when we came to a stop. "We must walk the rest of the way," Damon said as he began to get out of the car. He came around and snatched me out of the back seat, and we began to walk into the woods. It was pitch black, and I was scared. "Wh-Where are you taking me?" I questioned with less confidence than I was hoping. No one said anything as we all continued our trek into the night.
As we came into a clearing, that is when I saw her. Black dress and veil, standing there tapping her foot in impatience. "Late again, I see! You vile wolves can't even show up on time... Move! Let me see her," Myrna spewed as she pushed past Damon to get to me. She walked up to me with an evil smirk on her face as she circled me three times, chanting something under her breath, then spit three times at my feet.
"Eww, what the f**k! Did you just spit at me?" I spat out in disgust. "Silence!" Myrna commanded. I went to speak and... nothing. Absolutely nothing came out of my mouth. "Now sit," she commanded again, as my body involuntarily sat on the ground. What the hell has this evil b***h done to me?
Myrna smirked in triumph and stated, "good puppy! Remember who you are dealing with, little wolf... Now, this spell on her won't last all night, so we need to move fast. Once we get into Half-moon's territory, I will need you to take out the guards quickly. When we get closer to the packhouse, I will activate our secret weapon so stay close."
Damon nodded and spoke to his army, "alright, everyone, we will take down anyone who comes in our way! She-wolves, pups, it doesn't matter. Myrna will handle the Alpha enough for me to kill him and take over the pack. After we slaughter the Alpha and anyone who stands in our way, we will be resting here tonight. Now let's show them who the Death Shadow Pack is!" he shouted as his army grunted in agreement. With that pep talk, we continued to move forward on an unsuspecting pack in the dead of night.
