The days following the accident had been a whirlwind of emotions for Liam and Emily. As Liam continued his physical therapy, he felt a growing sense of determination to confront his brother Harrison and reclaim his life. However, the shadow of the accident still loomed over them, and the police investigation into the tampering of his car was ongoing.

One afternoon, as Liam was working on his exercises, a police officer entered his hospital room. “Mr. Lucas, I need to speak with you,” the officer said, his expression serious.

Liam’s heart sank. “Is it about the investigation?”

“Yes,” the officer replied, glancing at Emily before continuing. “We’ve made some progress. We found evidence that the brake line on your car was tampered with, and we’ve identified the mechanic who performed the work.”

Liam’s pulse quickened. “What do you mean? Who was it?”

“It was Frank, the mechanic you spoke with,” the officer said. “He admitted to tampering with the brakes, but there’s more. He claims that someone paid him to do it.”

Liam’s stomach dropped. “What? Who?”

The officer hesitated, then continued, “He said it was Emily. He claims she approached him and offered him money to sabotage your car.”

Liam felt as if the ground had been pulled out from under him. He turned to Emily, who stood frozen, her face pale. “Emily, is this true?” he asked, his voice trembling with disbelief.

“No! Liam, I would never do that!” she exclaimed, her eyes wide with shock. “I swear, I didn’t pay him to do anything!”

The officer interjected, “We’re still investigating, but Frank was very clear about who paid him. He said it was a significant amount of money, and he has a record of the transaction.”

Liam’s mind raced. Could it be true? The thought felt like a punch to the gut. He had trusted Emily, and now it seemed as if everything he believed was crumbling around him. “Why would you do something like that?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

“I didn’t do it, Liam! You have to believe me!” Emily pleaded, tears welling in her eyes. “I’ve been here for you every step of the way. I would never hurt you!”

The officer continued, “We need to take this seriously. If Frank’s claims are substantiated, it could change the course of the investigation.”
