My phone chimed with a notification as I finished packing my overnight bag for the visit to my mother's house. I glanced at the screen, surprised to see a message from Kane.
"Good morning. What are your plans for today?"
I frowned, finding the casual inquiry odd. Kane and I weren't close enough for this kind of friendly check-in. I quickly typed back.
"Good morning. Why do you ask?"
His response came almost immediately. "Just curious. Nothing important."
Something about his tone felt off, but I couldn't place my finger on what exactly. I debated how much to share, then decided on a half-truth.
"Going back to my mother's house in the Eastern Territory with my potential mate."
