-Cassandra POV-
During the drive to the Moondance Pack, the three of us were in quiet reflection and a subtle sense of unease. The trees lining the road seemed to whisper secrets, their leaves rustling with the wind's hushed tones. Jason's steady hands on the wheel were a silent reassurance, while Brett's vigilant gaze from the back seat constantly reminded us of the recent dangers I had faced.
I dialed Lila's number, my fingers hesitating slightly before pressing call. "Lila, it's Cassandra," I began, my voice steadier than I felt. "There's been an incident. I'm safe, but the journey ..." My words trailed off, the memory of the attack still vivid in my mind.
Lila's response was immediate and concerned. "Auntie, are you sure you're alright? Do you need any assistance?"
I reassured her as best I could, feeling the weight of her worry through the phone. "I'm fine, I'm OK." I paused. "But I wanted to let you know that Jason and Brett are coming with me. We'll talk about it when I get to you."
After some time, the packhouse of the Moondance Pack came into view, its familiar structure a welcoming sight. Thomas greeted us warmly, his eyes lighting up when he saw Jason and Brett. Their reunion was marked by hearty handshakes and backslaps.
Lila arrived shortly after, her quick strides and searching gaze betraying her concern. She ushered me into her office, closing the door behind us for privacy. Her eyes, similar to her mothers', scanned me meticulously, searching for any signs of harm.
"Auntie, tell me everything," she urged.
I recounted the attack, leaving no detail, watching her expression shift from concern to resolve. "I'll inform Matthew to increase our patrols," Lila stated firmly. "Are you OK turning our focus to why you're here? We need your expertise to find the right person to fill your shoes."
Our conversation shifted to the upcoming interviews, a welcome distraction from the earlier events. Being with Lila and discussing matters of the pack grounded me. It reminded me of the purpose behind my visit.
Lunch with Gabriel was also a welcome respite from this morning's event. He had a way of cutting through the noise, focusing on what was essential. We reviewed the candidates for my replacement, each sparking a discussion about the future of the pack's healthcare.
"The pack needs someone who can blend tradition with innovation," I thought aloud. Gabriel nodded in agreement.
"We need a healer who understands the Moondance Pack's unique values," he added. "Someone who can step into your shoes, Doc, and continue the legacy you've built."
The weight of the decision pressed heavily upon me, yet Gabriel's and Lila's support was a comforting presence. We delved into each candidate's background, discussing their strengths and potential challenges they might face.
As we stood to head to the conference room where the interviews would happen, Gabriel's hand on my shoulder stopped me. "Doc, you've always been more than just our healer. Your judgment has guided this pack through many challenges. Trust it now."
I nodded, a sense of purpose refilling my spirit. "Thank you for your trust in me, Gabriel."
We all made our way to the conference room. As we settled in and prepared to meet them, I felt a renewed sense of duty. This trip was about more than just finding a replacement. It was about ensuring the continued strength and health of a pack that had become my family.
The first candidate was Dr. Emily, a young healer whose bright eyes sparkled enthusiastically. She walked in with a bounce in her step, her youthful energy almost tangible in the room.
When we asked about her approach to healing, her response was a flood of words, ideas spilling out with the eagerness of a river bursting its banks. She spoke of integrating modern medical techniques with traditional healing, her ideas innovative but tinged with a hint of naivety. I couldn't help but admire her passion, even as I wondered about her experience handling the complexities of pack life.
Our next was Dr. Julian, his demeanor as calm as a still lake. His experience was evident in his confident stride and the measured tone of his voice. As he spoke of his years of service in his former pack, there was a sense of traditionalism in his methods, a reliance on tried and tested ways.
When Lila asked him what he thought was the most crucial quality in a pack healer, he replied, "Steadiness," without hesitation. "The ability to remain calm and collected, no matter the situation." His words were reassuring, yet I wondered if his approach might be too rigid for the evolving needs of the Moondance Pack.
Our third candidate was Dr. Nina. Her presence was like a gentle breeze. There was a serenity about her, a quiet confidence that spoke of deep knowledge and understanding. Her expertise in herbalism was immediately apparent as she discussed her approach, which was deeply rooted in traditional healing methods.
Her answers were thoughtful, reflecting a holistic view of health that extended beyond physical ailments. "Healing is as much about the mind and spirit as it is about the body," she said, her voice soft yet firm.
The last candidate was Dr. Aaron, a former lone wolf whose life experiences had taken him far beyond the boundaries of pack territories. His approach to healing was unconventional, shaped by his experiences in the field. His tales of treating injuries and illnesses in dire circumstances were fascinating.
When Gabriel asked Dr. Aron how his unique experiences would benefit the Moondance Pack?" he replied, "I've learned to think on my feet and make the most of what's available. That can be crucial in unexpected situations.
As the interviews concluded, I found myself deep in thought. Each candidate had their strengths and weaknesses and unique perspectives that could enrich or challenge the Moondance Pack.
The decision would not be easy.
The sun was starting to lower. It was the end of the afternoon.
"I know we need to talk about these candidates, but can you give me a minute to reach out to William?" I asked as I stood up.
"Of course, Auntie," Lila replied. "I'll go get us a snack."
I dialed William's number. He answered quickly. "Everything OK, my love?"
"Yes, my warrior. I just wanted to hear your voice." I paused, feeling better after hearing him. "Did you find anything?"
"No, it's like they appeared where they attacked you. We can't find a trace…" William paused, and I could hear the worry in his voice. "We've increased patrols, and I've been talking with Matthew about Moondance's surveillance systems."
"You'll figure it out, my warrior." I wish I had been there with him.
"Did you find your replacement?" he asked.
"We met several interesting candidates. We'll be discussing them shortly." I paused. "I miss you," I whispered.
"Me too, more than you can imagine."
We stayed in silence for a while. We were listening to each others' breathing.
"I can't wait for you to come back home," he said, breaking the silence.
"Soon, my warrior."
"I'll let you get back to Lila and Gabriel and tell them I'm looking forward to their visit."
"Will do, my warrior. I love you."
"I love you too."
As I hung up, I stared into the horizon. The attack felt planned like it was hiding something. The rogues were huge. How can rogues be so huge? Something was amiss.
I returned to the conference room when Lila arrived with some snacks.
We sat down to discuss the four candidates. The weight of the day's interviews lay heavily upon us, a tangible presence in the air. Gabriel, Lila, and I leaned into the task at hand, the final deliberation to choose my successor.
Each candidate we interviewed brought their unique strengths and weaknesses, painting a complex picture of the future of the pack's healthcare.
"I like Emily's energy," Lila began, her voice thoughtful. "But I worry about her experience. The pack's healer needs not just knowledge but wisdom."
Gabriel nodded in agreement, his fingers tapping rhythmically on the table. "Experience does count for a lot. Julian has that in spades. He's seen it all," he said, though his tone suggested a reservation about Julian's conventional approach.
I found myself drawn back to the memory of Nina's interview. "Nina's holistic view could bring a fresh perspective to our healthcare practices," I mused aloud. "Her approach is both traditional and innovative. It's a balance we might need."
"And Aaron?" Gabriel asked, his brow furrowing. "His experience is unique, but can he integrate into the pack's structure?"
Aaron's lone-wolf background was both his strength and his potential weakness. "His adaptability is unmatched, but the pack needs more than just skills. It needs someone who understands the heart of our community."
In the end, it was Dr. Nina who stood as the most promising candidate. Her quiet confidence, extensive knowledge of traditional healing methods, and willingness to embrace new ideas made her an ideal choice.
"There's a sense of harmony in choosing Nina," Lila finally said, her voice tinged with relief. "She seems to understand the balance between tradition and innovation."
Gabriel nodded in agreement. "Nina, it is, then. She'll be a fine healer for the Moondance Pack."
