5 Reyne's POV My hands jumped to his shoulders. I tapped them to make him release me as I was breathless. But he moved closer and pulled me against his chest. He tilted his head and sůcked my lips hard. I was out of my wits because— One: he was exceptionally good. The way he was kissing me, I was never kissed like that before. And two: I just had a nasty breakup and my heart was in pieces. Well, we didn't say the words out loud, but given what transpired and the discoveries I made, it was pretty obvious. Chase never loved me. He was using me. And tonight he got what he always wanted— My twin sister. Trust once broken can never mend. Therefore, I mustered all my strength and stomped my high heel down on the mysterious guy's foot. "Oww, that's not a good way to make your mate pull away from a kiss." "You bastård! How dare you assault me?" I shoved him back. His back hit the closed doors. The impact was so great that the elevator shook from it. However, I didn't look away. Instead I observed the guy with my teary red eyes. It's not like I've not seen him before, but right now he looked different... And so freakîng good looking that my breath got caught. He had amazing black hair that fell over his grey eyes. Clean-shaved face and jaw sharper than Chase's. Skin tanned and veins on his neck and hands. He was taller than he looked on the ice. Broad shoulders like hulk's and a personality that made me gulp hard. His t-shirt was so tight, I could see the outline of his abs. I was going down south when his gentle and amused voice interrupted me, "Assault? I thought I was being a good mate after what happened to you up there." "It's good it happened if you ask me. I was anyway going to confront you about us," He pointed between us. "And steal you away. I'm happy it ended this way." "Are you serious?" I laughed madly as tears flowed out of my eyes. I know people were going to enjoy my humiliation and the fact that I was used and discarded, but this was beyond bearable. "I... I didn't mean it in that way. Trust me." He forwarded a hand to touch my arm. "Fûck you. I don't care what you meant or not. Just get away." I tried to push him away and restart the elevator. My chest was too heavy to let me breathe normally. All I needed right now was my room and that quiet corner by the window, where I spent my time crying whenever I was hurt. The only thing different this time was that, earlier it was mom or Jeyne whose words or actions hurt me; this time it was the guy I loved with all my heart. "I think you didn't hear me correctly, Reyne. I'm your mate. Your destined mate!" Those words stirred my heart and made me move back until I hit the mirror. "M-mate?" I didn't really pay attention to that part before. "A-are you serious? Y-you..." "Yes, love. You are my mate. I found that out four days ago when I saw you outside the ice room, waiting for someone." He smiled and grabbed my hand. "I had wanted to come and hold you right then and there. But then that Asshøle from upstairs came and you froze like he's your everything. That gave away the fact that you both were probably dating, so I stayed back." "And I think you're still not eighteen so you couldn't pick my scent. That's why I stayed away from you. But after what I saw today, I couldn't hold back and came after you." He lifted my knuckles to his lips and kissed them gently. My eyes enlarged in shock and other doubtful emotions. "You can't possibly want me." I snatched my hand back as I glared at him accusingly. "When that Asshøle upstairs didn't want me, why would you?" "He's an i***t I guess, that's why he didn't want you. But I'm your mate. You are made for me. That's the biggest reason why I want you." "Bull s**t!" I scoffed and turned to face the mirror. "Look at me... Look at my face! I'm hideous. None of them like me. So don't play games with me. I know you don't want me." I cried at the sight of the girl looking at me from the mirror. Her eyes were swollen, lips trembling and snot leaking from her nose. No guy would want a girl like this. All of them like bïtches like Jeyne. They want their long toned legs, pretty blue barbie eyes, and that fake face. I have never been anyone's first choice. Hence, it's only obvious this guy here, who said was my mate, wasn't honest about me. That was enough for me to push him away and start the elevator. He didn't try to stop me, but he didn't look away either. "Listen, I know you're hurt and—" "You don't know! Has anyone ever rejected you?" I growled at him. His eyes sympathetically softened as he sighed, "No." "Then you don't know the pain of someone who was always rejected and reprimanded." My words sent his eyebrows hitting his hair line. He extended a hand to touch me. Luckily the elevator doors opened and I rushed out. I wanted to be alone but my mate followed after me. He didn't ask me questions. He didn't ask me where I was headed. He just followed at a safe distance. I came out of the housing complex out on the street. My feet were aching. I'm not a fashionista and these painful heels are not my thing. I love shoes and comfy slippers. For Chase, though, I've been going out of my comfort zone to please him. Not after today. From now on, I'll choose myself. My feet came to an abrupt halt. Yes, I will choose myself. But… is there anyone who would choose me? I was thinking just that when a big shadow fell over my frame. I turned my head to see my mate hovering behind me. He was attempting to stay far away but he was still noticeable. Mate. I thought about it. Was he being honest or was he taking advantage of my situation? I won't know it because I am still not eighteen. There's still three weeks to go. However, a guy looking like that wouldn't come after me if he wasn't my mate, would he? No guy ever came after me. Even with Chase, things started unexpectedly. First we bumped into a corridor once. Then we ran into each other after school. Then something else happened until eventually we started dating. My teeth gritted at the truth of it all— it was never real. It stings more knowing that I was just being used. "Why are you coming after me? Why don't you go back to the party?" I snapped at him in my teary voice. "I can't." He walked closer, hands in his pockets. I couldn't see him because it was dark and I hadn't unlocked my heightened vision yet, so I didn't know how he was looking. But given how his shoulders were tense, I acknowledge that he was worried. "As your mate, I need to protect you." "Protect me?" I laughed. "The guy I loved didn't protect me. Why would—" My words died in my mouth as my mate cupped my face. He leaned down to join our foreheads and held my face tight. "I'm born to protect you, Reyne. That Asshøle never deserved you and he could never protect what is mine to love and protect. Don't doubt your worth, Reyne. You are the most beautiful girl I know. You are—" "Liar!" I threw his hands away as my chest felt like it was exploded with a bomb. "No one loved me. Why would a handsome guy like you love me! Besides, I'm not sure if you're really my mate or just playing with me like him." "Reyne, I'm not— Reyne, wait!" I ran away from him. My heels were killing my feet. I kicked them off and took off with my throat clogging up. I never looked back but I could feel him behind me. He followed until I reached home. I pounded on the door. Mom answered the door with a hiss. "Why are you banging on the door like a giant? Can't keep patience for a few seconds!" I pushed her aside and ran upstairs. She called after me, telling me to come down. I didn't stop. I ran all the way to my room and ran inside. Locking the door, I swooshed down on the floor. I wrapped my hands around my knees and buried my face in them. I sobbed loudly and harshly. My sobs bounced off the walls. Why is it hurting so much? Why do I feel like my soul is wrenched out of my body? Why? Just why? "I will destroy you Chase Astor. You didn't shatter my heart tonight. You shattered your own dreams..." I wiped my cheeks. "Because from now on, I will do all it takes to shatter you too." Saying those words out didn't help. The ache still remained. My heart still constricted. My body still shook with trembles. I buried my face deeper between my knees and sobbed harder. Moon Goddess, help me get over this place. Please. I made that prayer— completely unaware of that mysterious guy, who said he was my mate, waiting down there outside my house in worry for me. Tbc...
