Reyne's POV
A part of me urged me to disconnect the call and pretend this never happened, and to go and find Chase. Maybe this was one of Jeyne's games. She likes to bother me.
And still I couldn't really forget it because the call was made from Chase's own phone. This wouldn't be possible if he were really not with Jeyne.
He was. And he was in her arms. I couldn't see them, but I knew they were.
Fighting against that vulnerable part of me that wanted me to run and find a dark corner to cry, I held onto the phone and heard every word they exchanged.
"Reyne was so desperate to keep me that she never noticed how little I cared. She never noticed that whenever I kissed her, it was you in the back of my mind."
"You both shared the same space in your mother's womb. So by being with her, I was trying to make myself feel like I was with you. And you know, there were times when I imagined you in the back of my mind when I said I love you to her."
"Wait, let me guess. She actually believed you, didn't she?" Jeyne guffawed. She always laughed whenever I was getting humiliated, so it didn't hurt much.
But when Chase laughed, it was as though my whole body was dipped into a tank of corrosive battery acid.
"Of course she does. But do you know how annoying she is? The constant smiling. The innocent act. The way she follows me around like a lost puppy. Many times I felt like I should just kick her away."
"But you didn't."
"I couldn't. I still had to impress you. To make you notice me, Jeyne."
"You have my interest now, Chase. Your way was questionable but you truly love me. I'm impressed. I might give you a chance. What will you do now? What about Reyne? She loves you." Jeyne said seductively.
I held my breaths. Despite everything I heard, I thought Chase would say he would stay with me.
What he said though, landed like a blow to my ribs.
"Your twin is seriously so stupid. Do you really think I would want a clinger like her in front of you?" He cackled, making my heart bleed.
"I can't believe you managed to keep this going for two years."
"Reyne made it easy. Had she not been so stupid to think that someone like me would want an average nobody like her, I wouldn't have been able to do this. She's a needy fool."
"Perhaps try giving her some love at home, Jeyne. That would stop her from thinking that people in the outer world are loving."
They both laughed.
My fingers curled around my phone. Two years. For two years, I dedicated my all to him. I sacrificed my comfort and everything to help him out. I was there for him when he couldn't practice well. I held him when he lost matches in the past. I made energy drinks for him and bought protein powders for him with my own money.
After everything I did, he was laughing at me. He was calling me a needy fool.
Anger welled up in my chest. I pushed people out of my way as I attempted to find them. The music coming from the phone was the same as the music playing around me, so they must be somewhere nearby.
My twin and boyfriend were still making fun of me. Jeyne didn't even try to disconnect the phone and save my heart from breaking any further. Neither did I.
Because the more I heard, the more enraged it made me.
I came out of the apartment and searched the passage. It was empty. I was about to go back inside when I caught sight of a familiar shimmering purple sequin skirt— that was Jeyne's favorite skirt.
She was pressed up against a wall at the far end of the passage. I quietly moved closer, their voices coming clearly from the phone. However, I put it away when I approached them.
Chase was recalling another one of my embarrassing moments when I stood beside them. Both of them turned. Their laughter died instantly as Chase's eyes widened.
I didn't bother looking at Jeyne. I wasn't interested in seeing her smirking face. I kept staring at Chase, the pathetic cheater who thought using me to get my twin's attention was an expert move.
"Reyne, when did you come here?" He stared back at me as he moved away from Jeyne, who stood pressed to the wall.
"Oh, no! Reyne, it's not what you think. I swear we weren't—"
"Cut the crap, Jeyne!" I snapped in an emotionless voice. "I know it's your life's motive to hurt me. Your day doesn't end until you see me crying. I'm not surprised you are with him."
I paused to inhale a breath, "But I want to ask a few questions to him."
Jeyne moved now. It was the kind of movement an attention seeker would make from being ignored. On the other hand, Chase gulped hard. I saw a kind of nervousness in his eyes.
"In fact, I only have just one question." He rubbed the back of his neck as I continued to stare at him.
"I know I'm clingy. I know I expected a lot from you. I know I was delusional to think a person like you could want a nobody like me. But just tell me one thing— Were you really that insecure about yourself that you had to use me just to get to my sister?"
Both of them stared at me. I held onto my 'I don't give a damn' attitude as I smirked at him.
"Your name may be Chase, but clearly, you’re terrible at chasing." He moved back as his eyes jumped in surprise at my words.
The entire world was tilting beneath my feet. The two people who should have been protecting my heart just broke it with their betrayal. I felt like I could use a sharp knife.
I wouldn't have minded if a rogue appeared out of nowhere and sank its teeth into my throat. Because honestly, any physical pain would be ten times better than what I was going through mentally.
"Jeyne, if I were you," I maintained my calm face and turned to my twin. "I'd be embarrassed to give a guy like him a chance. A man who has to use your own sister to get to you clearly doesn’t have what it takes to win you himself. That says everything about how incapable he is."
"Reyne, watch your mou—" Chase never got to finish that word as I smacked him across the face, hard.
"Or what, ha? What will you do? You've already done the worst." I said quietly.
Chase fumed. He looked like he wanted to say something but he stopped. I noticed him looking behind me. I turned to see and my shoulders stiffened.
All the people had come out of the apartment. The music had stopped. Given how shocked and invested they appeared, I could bet they heard everything; and that they had been there for a while.
They were now staring at me. The girls who insulted me earlier were ogling at me.
"Can't believe Chase had been dating her for two years?" Someone whispered.
"Didn't you hear what Reyne said? He's been using her to get to her beautiful twin." Another remarked as a slow smile covered my lips.
I should be feeling embarrassed, but something inside me just went quiet. My tears dried out. My chest was suddenly light. The heartbreak remained. But beneath it... I felt nothing.
Anger was there. Cold, burning anger. But beyond that nothing.
I looked at Chase with a cold smile, "You know what... I'm not going to cry."
"I'm going to make you pay."
Silence stretched in the corridor even though there were so many people. I was so mad and upset, I walked toward the elevator as I couldn't think of anything else to say.
But then I stopped. I looked over my shoulder at Chase.
"You think you're the best player out there, right. You made a game out of my heart for two years. I curse you, Chase Astor. I wish you lose the game of life and always suffer for what you did to me."
I started walking again. Fûck elevator, I took the stairs since I was so nervous. My knees were shaking. After I left there, tears returned to my eyes. But I didn't stop. I used the stairs to go down two floors.
Then I entered the passage and pressed the button for the elevator. It surprisingly came in a few seconds. I stepped inside without looking around. A guy was already in there. He reeked of alcohol, and given his attire— a black leather jacket on black jeans— I knew he came to the party.
I ignored him as I had better things to worry about. For one, I needed to think how I was going to go to college tomorrow? Two, I didn't even look for Zedkiel to thank him for inviting me to his party. Three, the snickering I was going to get tomorrow.
Then there was— My attention was drawn by the guy next to me. He just pressed the STOP button. Why?
I looked up. My muscles clenched tight as I took in his face. I know him. He's the captain of the losing team Chase had a match with today.
"Why did you stop the elevator!" I seethed at him.
He didn't respond for a good while increasing my fury. Just as I opened my mouth to snap at him again, his hands came around me.
"Calm down, little mate. Your anger is scaring me." He said before his mouth covered mine in a mind-spinning kiss.
Wait, did he just call me his little mate?
I didn't get to delve into it because he deepened the kiss, causing me to forget everything.
