Chapter 1: Shopping For School

1003 Words
I woke up to the sun shining in my face. Looking around, I knew I wasn't in my soft and warm bed. No. I was in the woods. Confused, I stood up looking around, trying to figure out what had brought me to the woods in the first place. Flashes of events that happened last night came into view.   A wolf?   I started to look around for it but nothing. I was shocked thinking that the wolf didn't kill me. Although I felt safe being near him.   With all the thoughts running through my head, I made it out of the woods, walking up to my house. I felt like I was being watched, but when I turned around, nothing was there. I was feeling kinda scared now. I cautiously turned around and raised my hand to knock on the door, seeing that I didn't have my keys. But as I was about to knock, the door flung open with my frantic mom looking all over my face.    "Annabel! Oh my gosh! You're okay. Where did you go?" She shouted at me. I didn't like lying to my mom, but should I tell her about what I saw in the woods? A voice in my head told me not to and that's what I did. She wouldn’t believe it anyway.   "Uh, I-I just went outside for fresh air." I told her nervously.    "And why do you look so dirty?" She asked, ignoring what I had just said. "Go up and take a shower. You have school in the morning. We still have to get some more of your school supplies. Did you forget that?" She asked me accusingly. How could I forget? I'm going to a new school and I hate starting over. Something always happens to me. If it's not me embarrassing myself, it's someone else doing it for me. I shook my head and walked into the house, going to my room.   I took out some clothes and rested them on my bed. I don't know what time it is but it's probably late in the day since she was acting like that. I walked into the bathroom, stripping down and turning on the water at a warm temperature. Stepping in the shower, I let the water fall down my body, washing off all the dirt from me. Thoughts of last night came rushing into my mind. I don't know if I was delusional to think about a wolf, but something about that wolf made me feel strange. It made me feel like I was safe and belonged with the wolf. I shook my head and got out of the bathroom after 20 minutes. Wrapping a towel around me, I walked back into my room and dried myself. I put on my clothes and left my hair to air dry. It would turn curly anyway.   "Annabel, are you done! It's already 5 o'clock. I don't want the store to close." I heard my mom say from downstairs. Five o' clock? What time did I get home? I sighed and walked down the stairs where my mom was waiting for me.    "Ready," I said softly.    "Okay, good. Let's go."     ***   "I think that's everything." My mom said more to herself. I nodded and took the bags from her hand since she was struggling.    "I'm hungry. Can we go get something to eat?" I asked her. She nodded.    "Sure. there is a restaurant that we passed a while ago." She said. We walked to the car and put the stuff in the trunk.    "Mom? Where's dad?" I asked. I didn't see him when I came into the house.    "He went to go find a job. He left early this morning though." She said, glancing at me and looking back at the road. I sat back and looked out the window. Why did we have to move to such a place that gets very cold when fall comes around. Soon we were at a restaurant or more like a cafe. It was small but looked well put together. My mom and I both got out and walked up to the door, opening it. Walking inside the door made a 'ding' sound signaling someone came in.    A very perky girl who looked to be about 5'2 walked up to us. She had brown shoulder length hair and was wearing a red and white shirt with black pants. "Hi. My name is Jessica and I'll be your waiter today." She said happily.  I'm not sure if she has to act that way because of the job she's doing, but it's adorable. She showed us to our seats and took down our order. "I'll be right back with your orders." She said. I smiled slightly at her and she was off to another table.    "Do you think I could get a job here?" I asked my mom.    "You mean in this restaurant? Sure. I don't see why not." I wasn't particularly talking about this place but I guess it would do. I would like to do something in the afternoon when I'm finished with school. Going home really isn’t fun, seeing as I have nothing to do there. Jessica came back and put our food in front of us.    "Thanks," I said quietly.    "No problem." She said and walked away.    "She seems nice. Maybe you can befriend her since you're new here." My mom said. I shook my head, smiling at her. My mother would always care about where it would hurt. But I love her to pieces. If I were to lose her, I wouldn't have a clue on what to do. As we finished up our food, we called for the check and left a tip for Jessica being as she was a nice waiter.    When I reached home it was half past eight. I went straight to my room and plopped on my bed, not bothering to change my clothes. Tomorrow would be a tiring day and I would be in for a lot.
