Chapter Nine

MEREDITH’S POV

I kept knocking on Nakia’s door but there was no response, I placed my ear on the door to listen for footsteps or sounds but I wasn’t getting anything.

It’s a Saturday; she should be awake by now and besides what we have on ground is worth more than sleeping in.

Using my powers, I unbolted the door from inside and walked in. My eyes scoured the room and I caught the glimpse of someone lying down on the couch with a rag on their forehead.

“Nakia wake up, we’ve got bigger problems than…” I stopped abruptly as I figured the person on the couch wasn’t Nakia but Marissa, the king’s sister.

She was taken years ago by the dark lord for the king’s refusal of handing over the crown, we all thought she would have been dead but somehow she’s here and laying on Nakia’s couch.

“Marissa, Marissa” I tapped her slightly as my eyes traced the bruises on her arm and on her wrists, her eyes fluttered open and she got up slowly as she tried to remember me.

“Meredith?” she called, “yes it’s me” I sat beside her and pulled her into a hug.

Marissa knows me because of how close my mom was to the queen and my friendship with Nakia. “wha-what are you doing here?” she asked

“I think the main question should be how did you get here? Where did Nakia find you? We all thought Maugrim would have killed you”

“well I’m still alive but the torment was endless and did you say Nakia?, I thought she died in that accident” she held her head and winced

“she’s alive and you’re sitting on her couch”

“The last thing I remember was jumping out from a portal I created to get away from Maugrim and now I’m here” she looked around

“I’m sure Nakia found you wherever you fell and brought you here, speaking of Nakia, where is she?” I got up and walked into the passage, towards her room.

I stopped by the door as I saw that she was still covered up in bed, “Nakia get up” I walked towards her and removed the duvet from her body but she didn’t react.

“Nakia” I shook her but still no response, I moved closer and I saw her eyeballs turned white

“No, no, no!” I shook my head, “get up! Nakia! Oh no you’re going anywhere”

I need to get help, I closed my eyes and vanished.

“What are we going to do? How are we even sure she’s not even gone” Fenris ran his hands through his hair as he paced around

“No she’s still in there, can’t you see she’s breathing” I placed Nakia’s head on my thigh, “Not for long till that creepy thing finally gets her” he groaned

“what’s going on?” Marissa walked in and her eyes widened, “No, oh no” she shook her head

“This-this is my fault. I did this” she moved back slowly, Fenris and I looked at each other

“what do you mean? This is clearly the bakasura doing some weird s**t” Fenris cussed

“It came from the barrier right? The portal?” she asked

“yes yes, but right now we have to get her back” I focused my gaze back on Nakia

“I opened the portal” she blurted and I turned swiftly to look at her, “you did what?”  I raised a brow

“He-he made me do it.. the dark lord” she stuttered and my jaw dropped

“we’ll come back to that but can we bring her back or at least know what it’s doing to her in there. It should have killed her by now” Fenris exhaled

“I can’t say for sure that this is what’s going on, I can’t go into her mind without a telepath”

“I can help you, please let me” she stepped forward, I nodded positively and she walked towards the bed and held my hand, placing my other hand on Nakia’s head

I started having this strange surge in my body, like an awkward feeling “what do you feel?” Fenris asked

“Disappointment, Sadness and-and fear” I finished and took my hand off, “he’s manipulating her” I said

“but why? Why is he doing that?” Fenris stopped pacing

“I don’t know but I have to get into her head, she’s giving in and she can’t let it win. Marissa can you help me?” I looked at Marissa and she nodded positively

“But I can’t keep you in for long, my powers are wavering. I’m just getting better” she said

“are you sure you want to do this?” Fenris arched a brow, “I lost her once, I won’t let it happen again”

“but you have to be careful, if the bakasura gets even the slightest hold of you in there. You’ll be trapped in her mind” she warned

I gulped before nodding positively, I held Nakia’s hand and Marissa held mine, closing our eyes. She got me in.

IN NAKIA’S MIND 

I opened my eyes and I saw myself standing in Nakia’s passage, i could feel the negative energy in the air that it was stomach turning.

I proceeded to look for Nakia, I heard sobbing and I traced it to the kitchen. She was sitting by one corner of the kitchen, hugging her knees and sobbing into her palms.

“Nakia” whispered as I moved swiftly towards her, “huh?” she raised her head

“Meredith” she pulled me into a hug, “it got you too?” she asked

 “it’s okay, No I’ve come to get you out.” I said

“I don’t want to go, I’m a disappointment. I failed my parents, they hate me now” she sobbed, “No, no they don’t and we both know that” I disagreed and she shook her head in disappointment.

“They-they told me, they said it to my face” she sniffled, “how’s that possible? They are dead remember?” I tried reminding her

“No, I saw them. The bakasura made me talk to them, they told me how they really feel. They want me to hand over the crown to the dark lord” she continued and my eyes widened

“You will do no such thing! have you forgotten the bakasura’s powers? trickery, image and mind manipulation. It’s tricking you and it’s feeding on your fear”

She stopped crying, “oh princess” I heard the bakasura call

“you need to fight it, you’re stronger than it” I urged her, “it said I’m a weakling, even my parents” she exhaled

“No you’re not!, you’re strong. A queen, and not just any queen. An alpha queen” I said and she looked at me as the tears dried from her eyes.

My parts of my body started to fade, Marissa can’t hold still any longer. “Fight it Nakia, fight it” I said before fading away completely

I opened my eyes and I was back in Nakia’s room, “so?” Fenris asked eagerly

“He’s trying to get her to give the crown to the dark lord, I tried getting through to her I just hope it helped” I turned to look at Nakia’s body still not moving.

“Why don’t we just trap this thing right now” Fenris suggested, “the cube isn’t ready, there’s nothing in here that can hold a demon that ancient”

“Let’s just hope for the best right now”

I buried my head in my palms and I heard sneezing three times,  I raised my head and Nakia was awake

“Nakia”

“Queen” we said simultaneously

“I think I know how we can catch this thing” she said
