chapter 1: the party that changed everything
Chapter 1 — The Party That Changed Everything
Westbridge University had two kinds of students.
The ones who struggled to afford textbooks… and the ones who arrived in luxury cars.
Bella Carter belonged to the first group.
She lived in a small dorm room with her best friend Emily Carter, worked part-time at a café near campus, and spent most nights studying with Jessica Miller and Olivia Brown at the library.
Her life was simple.
Predictable.
Safe.
Which was exactly why she shouldn't have gone to that party.
“You have to come,” Emily insisted that evening while fixing Bella’s hair. “Everyone is going.”
“Everyone meaning the rich kids,” Bella muttered.
“Exactly!”
Jessica laughed from the bed. “Relax, Bella. It’s just a party.”
Bella sighed.
Thirty minutes later, they were standing in front of the biggest mansion she had ever seen.
Luxury cars lined the driveway—Lamborghinis, Bentleys, Ferraris.
Students in designer outfits walked confidently inside like they owned the place.
Bella suddenly felt very aware of her simple black dress.
“This is insane,” she whispered.
“This,” Olivia said dramatically, “is Leo Kingsley’s mansion.”
Bella froze.
Everyone at Westbridge knew that name.
Leo Kingsley.
The heir to one of the largest business empires in the country. His family owned hotels, tech companies, and half the skyline of downtown.
He was rumored to be brilliant.
Dangerous.
Unpredictable.
And completely used to getting whatever he wanted.
“Why are we here?” Bella asked nervously.
Emily grinned.
“Because Ryan Thompson invited us.”
As if on cue, Ryan appeared beside them.
“Hey!” he said cheerfully. “You made it.”
Ryan was one of the more popular students on campus. He greeted Emily with a hug and nodded at Bella.
“Come on. Everyone’s inside.”
The house was even more unbelievable inside.
Crystal chandeliers.
Glass staircases.
Music echoing through rooms full of laughing students.
Bella noticed familiar faces everywhere—Daniel Harris arguing about business with Ethan Walker, Ava Collins dancing with Noah Brooks, Lily Anderson gossiping with Chloe Wilson.
Even some seniors she barely knew were there—Mason Clark, Tyler Scott, Grace Bennett.
“See?” Emily whispered. “Not so scary.”
Bella relaxed slightly.
Maybe it really was just a party.
Then suddenly the music lowered.
A ripple of whispers spread through the room.
“He’s here.”
Bella frowned.
“Who?”
But before Emily could answer, the crowd shifted.
Someone had just walked in.
Tall.
Confident.
Dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit.
Leo Kingsley.
Even from across the room, his presence was impossible to ignore.
He moved through the crowd with effortless authority, followed by Daniel Harris and Jacob Reed. Conversations paused as students subtly made space for him.
Bella expected arrogance.
Instead, Leo looked bored.
Completely bored with everything around him.
Until his eyes moved across the room.
And stopped on her.
Bella immediately looked away.
“That was him,” Emily whispered excitedly.
“I figured.”
But when Bella glanced up again, Leo was still looking at her.
Not casually.
Not politely.
Intently.
Like she was the only person in the room.
Her stomach tightened.
“Why is he staring?” Olivia murmured.
Ryan shrugged. “Because that’s Leo Kingsley.”
Bella tried to ignore it.
She walked toward the kitchen to grab a drink.
But before she reached the counter, someone stepped in front of her.
Leo.
Up close, he looked even more intimidating.
Sharp jawline.
Dark eyes.
Calm but intense expression.
He studied her silently for a moment.
“You’re new,” he said.
His voice was smooth but firm.
Bella crossed her arms.
“No. I go here.”
“Then why haven’t I seen you before?”
She raised an eyebrow.
“Because I don’t usually attend billionaire mansion parties.”
Daniel Harris laughed behind him.
Leo didn’t.
His gaze stayed locked on Bella.
“What’s your name?”
“Bella.”
He repeated it slowly.
“Bella.”
Something about the way he said it made her heart skip.
“You don’t belong in this world,” Leo said quietly.
Bella frowned.
“What world?”
He gestured slightly toward the luxurious house.
“The one where everything is easy.”
Bella met his eyes.
“You don’t know anything about my world.”
For the first time, Leo looked surprised.
Then a slow smile appeared on his face.
Not friendly.
Interested.
“Maybe I’d like to.”
And suddenly Bella understood something very important.
Leo Kingsley wasn’t just curious.
He was intrigued.
And people like Leo Kingsley never stopped chasing things that intrigued them.
Even if it meant turning someone’s life upside down.
