CHAPTER FOURTEEN

She was being absurd but she didn't care. She stood with goosebumps everywhere as she watched the clothes get washed. The change in the temperature affected her immediately, vampire or not her body couldn't handle the instant switch between very hot temperature to cool temperature. However, it was no course for alarm because she knew her body would adjust soon enough and sure enough, it did. The goosebumps disappeared and it didn't feel like she was naked in a blizzard anymore. She stared at the washing machine as her clothes turned and turned, counting down the minutes until it would be over. She didn't want to leave until she was certain it was done. She doubted she would want to make the trip back here. Soon enough, the machine stopped rolling and before she placed the wet clothes into the dryer, she took a huge whiff, absolutely no smell of Vance, she mailed satisfactorily and then carefully placed the clothes in the dryer. She would let it sit in there for as long as possible while she cooked something up, her growling stomach reminded her she was hungry. She took a step and staggered, suddenly feeling dizzy. Selene felt her heart skip two vampire beats. This wasn't unusual, however, when accompanied with dizziness this was something to be worried about. She sighed, angry at herself. This was becoming a habit, it was sure to have adverse effects and her father often warned her about it but for some reason, she couldn't seem to remind herself to take it regularly except when the symptoms kicked in. She rushed to her room feeling her head spin as she did so, she tried to calm herself down. However, at this point her mind was in overdrive and panic was the only thing at large. She took long steps as she couldn't run, everything felt woozy. This was her fault, at first she got subtle signs but now her body had adjusted and unless it was this bad, she got no warning at all but still, she never learned to time her intake. She made it to her bedroom, only to find the door locked. She literally kicked the door open, thankfully it didn't fly off its hinges however, she had expected to do so but she was already weak so her body wasn't responding as it should. She flew on top of her bed and dragged herself to the drawers. She pulled the first one open and it landed on the ground with a splat, spilling all its contents onto the ground. She found what she was looking for but they were all scattered around. She would worry about that when she could think probably again for now she just hoped her hands would work enough to inject herself. She picked one of the little objects, it was a slightly long pill that was obviously not for swallowing. She popped the cap open and a little syringe appeared, she wasted no time as she stabbed herself with it, jerking not from the pain but from the rush of the serum flowing into her. She made two rapid jerks and her body relaxed, like really relaxed. Her hand that held the little injection immediately went lax and fell to the bed while the rest of her hanged awkwardly. She was in that position for about two seconds but it felt like two minutes. She could feel the serum go through her system as it quickly activated her dead cells and dying cells, rejuvenating or replacing them whatever was needed to be done. In those two seconds, her eyes rolled up that her pupils were almost unseen and her mouth hung out awkwardly. Her facial expression looked like someone who was on some sort of high and in various ways, it felt like some sort of high. Selene didn't want to admit it to herself but that was why she took longer to take it. It felt really good when she went over the limit just a little. It was like a good meal after one has been starved for a while. She sat up quickly and pulled the needle out of her skin and immediately closed it before throwing it into the trash. "Ugh!" She growled, noticing the mess. She got out of bed but didn't head to the side of the bed that needed cleaning, rather she went to the other side and opened her closet. She had to find something to wear, anything. She was never the walk around bare type, she wasn't about to start now. She settled for some shorts and a matching top. She slipped into them and her stomach reminded her again that food wouldn't be too bad, coupled with the fact that she just got her shot, she was beyond famished. Dressed, she quickly arranged the drawer and returned it before making her way to the kitchen where she quickly microwaved some leftovers before she cooked. There was no way her stomach was going to wait for her to prepare a full meal. She found pizza and quickly warmed that up. She ate a lot of junk food but that was completely fine, her body needed a lot of calories. It was like to compensate for the fewer blood vampires took now, they had to eat way more. She finished the three slices that were left and gulped some fruit juice straight from the carton. She was usually messy when she ate alone but only because she was alone. She rested for a few minutes before she stood up to go cook. She chose steak. Why? Because she was in a foul mood and what better way to improve her mood than meat. She made enough to last for lunch and dinner twice then taking her carton of juice along with her tray of steak, she sat comfortably on her sofa watching one of her favorite shows as she ate. She would worry about her troubles tomorrow. Like she had told her father, she was taking the day off. Tomorrow, she would be ready for war. Today, however, she would sit and unwind and pretend like the rest of the world didn't exist as she tried to have fun by herself even though her world was visibly crumbling. She had absolutely no plan to let that bother her.
