CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

1033 Words
Selene could hear the imaginary echo of the door as she walked briskly away. She did not want to have to speak to anyone because she was sure the bang had alerted the whole house, somebody was definitely heading towards her. Luckily she was able to make it out the door before Pam came back, she kept the pace as she walked to her car. She was so happy when it came into view and it made her rush even more to it. She tried to open her car and it opened, the sigh of relief that poured out of her was so strong that for a second she forgot she was fleeing but she immediately remembered and rushed. The key was in the ignition just like she had left it. She had been so scared that Manuel would have gotten ahead of himself and helped her attend to her car thereby slowing her escape. She did not miss a moment as she quickly started the engine and drove out of the parking lot that she had made herself and down the path that was sure to lead her out of this treacherous place. She only slowed down when she approached the gate and as soon as it was opened wide enough, she zoomed off. She prayed she would not have any reason to come back so soon, it was both physically and mentally draining. She took a long way home, she definitely needed the space of just gliding through the road and letting the wind blow through the window, hopefully, it would blow all her problems away even though she knew that was not possible. As she drove she made sure to play the music as loud as it was possible and she just concentrated on listening to the music and singing. A drive that should not have taken up to ten minutes ends up being almost forty-five minutes. She drove the car into the garage and got out of her car and she walked into the house through the entrance in the garage. She immediately headed for her room, she was exhausted, and sitting in a position for hours would do s**t to you. Her waist was killing her and all she wanted to do was lie down and hopefully take a nap. It would definitely stop her from thinking. She tossed her bag and personal computer- but really she only used it for work -onto the nearest couch as she passed the living room to her bedroom. She had just eaten so she was not worried about eating and thankfully she had eaten enough to hold her for a while. A part of her wanted to watch some television but she knew better, her thoughts would not let her concentrate. She got to her room and standing on one spot proceeded to take off all her clothes before she threw herself onto the queen-sized bed. She must have laid in bed for over thirty minutes battling with her thoughts and what her steps would be in relation to the position she had found herself in before she fell into a slumber, a dreamless one. She woke up with a start a couple of hours later and for a couple of seconds, she was disoriented as she was not fully awake yet. She yawned a little, feeling a lot hungry. Lunch had been enough but only enough for an hour or two and by the feeling in her stomach, it was at least four hours. She dragged herself out of bed still yawning and made her way to the kitchen. Only then did she realize that she had forgotten to call Mr. Bennett. "f**k!" She muttered under her breath. It wasn't too late to call but she hated calling after work hours because the heavens knew she wouldn't be pleased if she had a boss who often called after work hours. However, she could not wait until tomorrow as she needed Mr. Bennett to have set up a couple of things by the next day. One of the things she needed him to know and probably the most important one was the fact that her father would not be a part of the meeting and since this was something she wanted to take care of immediately, she would also like the meeting to be set as soon as possible. She needed something to snack on and she prayed there would be something in her refrigerator, the idea of cooking annoyed her. She would most definitely have to order dinner but after she finds a snack of course. She opened the refrigerator to nothingness except a bunch of fruits stacked in the corner and a can of strawberries. She frowned and picked an apple. What she wouldn't give for an apple pie. Almost immediately, Vance's homemade pie flashed in her mind and the escapade that followed during and after the pie. She squeezed her eyes shut and closed the fridge, feeling annoyed but couldn't exactly say why. She dug her teeth into the sumptuous apple, more like she wished it was sumptuous. It was beginning to look like it had spent maybe a little too long sitting in the refrigerator but it was edible and it could pass off as slightly fresh so she did let it bother. The good news was it didn't taste bad, she was grateful she had taken more than one. She quickly made her way to the living room where she slumped on her couch beside her personal items she had dropped on the couch on her way to her bedroom. She stretched for her purse and took out her phone. Already halfway through the first apple, she immediately dialed Mr. Bennett’s number, he picked up on the first ring and she cringed. She often forgot how eager he always was until she was speaking to him again. “Miss Valak,” he called, sounding quite surprised at her. This was understanding as she hardly called him let alone after work hours. She often just sends emails instead but they needed to have a discussion and going back to the company was completely out of the question.
