CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

1102 Words
“Is everything alright?” He almost sounded worried. “Yeah, I just figured the faster we deal with the Jefferson's the better for us. Are you busy right now?” Selene asked even though she was desperate, there was no way she would interrupt him if he was busy. Almost as soon as the words escaped her lips even before Mr. Bennett had a chance, Selene heard a loud crash and screams from children. She immediately knew it was Mr. Bennett’s children, she was aware that he had two girls. She had seen both a picture of them and them in person and she thought they were really pretty girls and very well mannered too. They were around ages eight and ten as far as she could remember, she wasn't completely sure. “What was that?” she cried, panicking almost immediately fearing the worst. “Nothing for you to worry about,” Mr. Bennett chuckled nervously and covered the mouthpiece of the phone. “Stop all the noise girls, I am on a very important call.” TheThe sound came out a little muffled but Selene could hear it clear as day. “Sorry daddy,” the girls replied almost immediately and Selene could distinctly hear each of their voices and could tell who it belonged to. Mr. Bennett did not reply to them and from the sound of his footsteps, Selene could tell he was leaving the room. “I am really sorry about that,” he started to say as soon as the sounds completely ceased. “What did you want to talk about?” he quickly added as if in a rush to change the subject and get back on track. “Are you sure this is a good time? I can always call back later.” Selene insisted, not wanting to take out the little time Mr. Bennett would get to spend with his family and even though Mr. Bennett wanted to pretend otherwise, nobody would take that loud crash as something insignificant. “No, no, it is nothing serious. Somehow Cheri brought down her drumset and that was the loud sound you heard. Besides, my wife is already attending to them, so this is a good time.” Mr. Bennett said in a hurry, afraid that Selene might not want to tell him what was going on. He already figured it was pretty important as she hardly called and often referred to just send an email, so it was kind of hard to hide his shock when her call came in. “Okay, I guess I will just cut right to the chase so I won't take any more of your time. The meeting with the Jeffersons,” She quickly changed the subject. “I will prefer it if the meeting is set as soon as possible. I would like to get this over with as soon as possible. Also, my father would not be in attendance, he said he trusts the both of us to be able to handle it.” “Okay, that is completely fine. Do you have any date in mind or whatever I come up with is fine?” he asked. “None specifically but the sooner the better and I was hoping we could also make it to be over lunch, the idea of dinner with the Jefferson doesn’t sound very pleasing to me.” She scrunched up her face as she spoke. Personally, she did not like the idea of having to do business with the lot of them as they were known for their shadiness. However, there was no denying that this would be great for their company so for that she was willing to take the risk and so was her father. “Okay, is there anything else?’ He asked as soon as he was sure she did not one to add anything else. “No, none at all. Well, at least for now. If I do think of anything I would let you know but yeah that is it. I am really sorry for interrupting your day and um I would let you get back to it.” she said in a rush but was glad she was able to get across to him. Mr. Bennett was pretty diligent so she was quite sure he would have an answer for her by tomorrow. “It was totally my pleasure.” He returned and ended the call. At the sound of the beep that indicated the end of the call. Selene threw her hands to the sides and felt relief wash over her even though she was dreading the meeting she would prefer to get it over with than stall. She then immediately resumed eating her apple that she had to put a stop because of the call. There was no way she could have spoken to Mr. Bennett while crunching on an apple. She picked up the remote and put on the television. She did not have any show in mind to watch but there was nothing else for her to do and the last thing she wanted was her thoughts to drift to Vance. It was hard to stop thinking about him and she blamed it on the fact that she could smell him everywhere. It annoyed her but almost at the same time it was almost soothing. She would have loved to go out for a couple of drinks or two but she was worried she would loosen on her self-control and somehow find herself in Vance's apartment because truthfully that was where she would rather be. However, that was not to be so she sunk farther into the couch as she tried to distract herself. She could already tell that it was going to be a long night and considering she took a nap, she would definitely spend the whole night awake. She better find something to watch or the chance that she would succumb to her desires would most definitely increase. The last thing she wanted to be was boy crazy and seeing how hard it was to keep him off her mind she was gradually getting there. She flipped the stations, a comedy show seemed like the best thing to get her mind back to normal and it would definitely cheer up. A couple laughed and she was sure she would be fine. Even though the night had not even started as it was still daylight out, she was sure she would last the hours without thinking about Vance, and even if she did she would not dwell on it.
