CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

She got to the living room, literally following her trail of blood. She swore at the mess knowing that it would only get worse. She got to the kitchen and the first thing that greeted her was a knife at the doorstep. She kicked it away and headed straight for the fridge pretending she did not see the rest of the scattered knives or the drip, drip of blood that was everywhere as she had crawled in her elbows looking for the knife she needed. She prayed there was not much blood outside her door or at least nobody would notice it as she was not in the mood for whatever procedures and explanation that was sure to follow after. The opened fridge held nothing tangible except a couple of fruits and a jug of milk other than that it was pretty empty and the consequences for procrastinating grocery shopping hit hard. She picked the fruit digging her teeth into the second to that last apple. She actually thought she had eaten them all but luckily there were still two left. She took out the berries and placed them on the table before taking out the milk. She obviously had no other option than to eat cereal. She did not make a move for the cereal immediately but rather she made sure to finish the fruits, she ate every single berry a little too happily even though emptying her fridge meant that she would have to go get more. She rested her elbow on the table for a couple of minutes after eating as she waited for the fruit to digest and hopefully turn them calories into energy because she needed a lot of them. Satisfied that she would not barf if she tried to stand on her feet, she did so and carefully made her way to the kitchen cabinets. The topmost part and pulled it open, what she wanted was on the extreme end. She kicked the rest of the boxes without remorse as she picked out her favorite cereal. With the box in hand, she picked a bowl and poured more than half of the remaining contents into it before returning it then she quickly made her way back to the kitchen table where she had placed the milk. She sat down and poured a generous amount of milk into it. Before she sealed the jug of milk shut she took a hearty gulp, drinking the contents enjoying the feel of the cool milk at the back of her throat. She then proceeded to eat the meal literally gulping it and forgetting to chew. By the time she was done eating she had milk in places, milk should not be. She needed a shower that was for sure and another she could not get off her mind was the fact that Mr. Bennett was likely to have called. As the thought flashed through her mind, she realized that she had no idea what the time was. It was still daylight that was for sure but she had no idea what time of day it was. She did not move as she tried to think of where her personal items were, there was one thing she could remember: she had not left the car with anything more than the car keys and so her phone was in an unlocked car. She winced, she was in no state to leave the house in the way she was covered in blood and torn clothes. She needed to take a shower first and a change of clothes. She rolled her eyes but she needed to get moving, if Mr. Bennett ended up setting the meeting for tomorrow; she had to make sure there was no indication about the bullet holes in her body. She swore, her luck was turning around for the worst. A part of her tried not to blame Vance but her life would likely be on track if she did not meet him. She would not need that distraction because she was not aware of its existence and she would definitely face her present problems head-on instead of running like a little girl. The thought of this brought her father to mind and she knew he would definitely have tried to reach her which meant she had to quickly return his call or he was likely to send someone over to check on her. Forcing herself, she stood up slowly bracing herself for whatever pain that was likely to follow because of the change in position. The pain was a lot less than she had anticipated and it made her move fast of course she regretted this decision almost immediately and slowed down her movements. She returned to her room, taking it one step at a time. She walked to the bathroom and ignored the bathtub, it was not a complete mess but it was in no state to be used. Instead, she walked straight to the shower. There she turned it up and stood as the warm water poured all over her body, from her hair to the tip of her toes. It gradually became just and she flexed her neck in relief. She bent a little and pushed her shorts down, kicking them off, her panties followed. Finally, she was naked under the water. She stood there for a while and gradually felt stronger. After a couple of minutes, she finally picked up the soap and washed herself clean. She made sure to wash her hair and she was careful around the wound not wanting to cause herself more pain than was necessary. She wiped herself as she walked to her wardrobe, she did not search much as she picked her robe and tied it around herself. It was enough covering and comfort she needed. Searching for anything else seemed like work she did not have any energy for. Dressed appropriately to go outside, she headed out. She stopped by the couch where she remembered having thrown the keys, it only took a couple of seconds to find it. With the key in hand, she walked towards the door. She pushed open the door and a slight creak could be heard. She instantly noted that she had forgotten to lock the doors after she had stepped in the night before or more like very early hours of the morning but of course locking the doors had been the last thing on her mind. The door opened to reveal a bright glow and Selene squinted but only for about a second as the sun was not so bright. She could tell instantly that it was evening, there were only about two hours before the sun would completely set if she guessed right. The car was parked on her lawn, she almost swore. She loved her lawn. The first thing she did was check for signs of blood, there wasn't a lot but if you knew what you were looking for, it was pretty obvious. She rushed to the car and saw there was a slight bloodstain on the driver's seat but nothing a little wiping can't handle. She got into the car and looked for her purse first before even thinking about starting the car. It did not take her too long to find it, in fact, it was exactly where she remembered she had dropped it. Finding what she came out for, she started the engine, opened the garage, drove the car into the garage, closed the garage, and went into the house through the garage. That way whenever she was ready to clean the car she could do so without incident. No sooner was she out of the car that she took her phone out of the purse. Ten missed calls. She shrugged, that was a lot less than she had expected. She immediately checked the record to see that Mr. Bennett had called her twice, her father seven times, and some random number. Her first thought was to return Mr. Bennett's call but then she saw his email. "Good day, Ma'am, I am sorry if I had called at the wrong time but I was calling to inform you that the meeting has been set for noon tomorrow. Please let me know as soon as possible if that would not be convenient for you. Attached are the details and address of the lunch. Let me know if you have any suggestions and/or adjustments to the sent plans. Thank you. Bennett" Selene read the email and a curse escaped her lips. By the morrow, she was sure to feel way better but she knew it was not advisable for her to move around that much just yet. As if her luck wasn't bad enough already, it just kept getting worse and worse but she did tell him to set the meeting up for as soon as possible and now she was regretting that decision. She finally made it back to the living room and threw herself on the couch as she got ready to shoot a reply.
