Prologue: A favour for a friend
Never did I realise just how much trouble one person can get into without even knowing about it.
I was flying around in a forest, taking in the scenery, stretching my wings, and just minding my own business, when I got a weird feeling in my head. It took me a while to realise that I was being summoned. I had completely forgotten that I am owned by another demon. Luckily for me, this demon is an old friend of mine.
We go way back to when he was young and stupid and, in an attempt to do the right thing, he accidentally bound myself to him. I cannot blame him, because if things had gone a bit differently, I may have ended up dead, so it is safe to say that I owe him my life. It was not like Nick to summon me, so I got a bit worried that something had happened. Nick should be strong enough these days not to need my help, so I had no idea what he wanted.
I tuned into my mind and located where the summoning was coming from. When I had located it, I teleported myself to my master's side, which turned out to be Nick's house. I was surprised that he still lived in the same old house, but thinking back, there were not only bad memories that had happened in this house. I could feel that there was something different about the house, but at that point, I could not figure out what it was.
Before I had a chance to give it any further thoughts, Nick started talking to me. He apologised for summoning me and explained that he did not want to open old wounds, but that he did not know any better way to get a hold of me. He would have called if he had my number but to be fair, I have not had a phone for quite some time, so I could not blame him. Nick usually has a reason for acting the way he does, and for that reason, I knew that he had something important to tell me.
It had been several decades since we last saw each other, so we had a lot to catch up on. After his wife, Lily died, Nick went off the grid, but I had not seen much of Nick since he had got married. He had never told me how Lily died, and I never pushed him for an explanation. Considering that we are all immortal beings, her death would likely have been because of some devastating reasons. Nick told me that he was finally ready to talk about why Lily died, as I would need to know this to be able to help him.
Nick told me that he has a daughter, called Cassie, and that she lives in the human world, as he is trying to keep her hidden. Lily died protecting their daughter from demons that were trying to get the upper hand by getting leverage against Nick.
After Lily died, Nick was in no state to look after his daughter, and he was worried that his anger from losing Lily would harm Cassie, as he had sworn to get revenge. To keep Cassie safe, he had used a favour from another friend and placed Cassie in a human family, where she has grown up, oblivious to the supernatural world, and the heritage that she carries inside herself.
During the years, Nick has checked in and kept an eye on Cassie, making sure that she is doing okay. Unfortunately, due to current issues and Nick getting closer to avenging his dead wife, the enemies were becoming more intense. Nick was worried that if he continued to check in on Cassie, to make sure that she is okay, he may unintentionally lead his enemies right to his daughter, which was the last thing he wanted to do. He could not risk anyone finding out about Cassie.
This is where I come in, as our friendship is not common knowledge anymore, no one should be able to draw any conclusions and figure out that Cassie is Nick's daughter. Nick sees me as family, as his brother, and he trusts me completely and knows that I would do anything I can to keep Cassie safe.
I wish I could decline, as babysitting is not part of my nature. After last time, I promised myself that I would never babysit anything else ever again, but I owe Nick my life, so I agreed to look after Cassie and act as her bodyguard, I mean how hard can it be?
Nick gave me some background information and told me that Cassie, as she has grown up in a human family, was likely to see herself as a human and not have any idea about her heritage or the abilities she will be able to wield once she has grown up. She is also unlikely to know anything about the supernatural world, which would make her an easy target.
My main job will be to keep Cassie safe, but as she is about to turn 17 years old, which is the time when Nick’s power started to make themselves known. Nick also wants me to try to guide Cassie and make sure that she is not freaking out, should any of her abilities surface. I am astonished at how much trust he puts in me, and I hope that I can live up to it, I would hate to let Nick down.
Cassie will not come into her full powers until she turns 18, but Nick is not entirely sure what abilities she has inherited, as she is the loving result of a light and a dark being falling in love.
Based on past knowledge, Cassie's abilities may present themselves during strong emotions, and she may have problems controlling them. Nick had that problem in his youth. I would know, I was there to experience it all with him and I can honestly say that we were lucky to make it out alive.
Cassie is in college, which seems to be the best place to befriend her and look over her. Luckily for me, my human form does not age and I managed to fit into college when I got to know Nick, so I should not have any major problems attending college to look after Cassie.
If only I knew what I had signed up for...
