“You just left without a word for ten years! Do you know what it’s been like over here?” she fumed with tears running down her already tired face.
The slap caught Daniel by surprise. However, what hurt him the most was the tears on his sister’s face.
Not knowing how to reply, all he could say was, “I know I messed up,” pausing for a moment, “I had my reasons.”
Emilia crosses her arms defensively. “Reasons? Do you think that justifies abandoning me? This is enough to explain how lost and lonely I felt when you went missing. On the other hand, how scared I was with no one by my side? I had to figure everything out on my own.”
“I didn’t want you to worry about me,” he insists. “I thought…I thought it would be better this way.”
“Better?” She scoffs. “Better for who? You left me when I needed my brother the most! I had to endure everything on my own.”
Daniel looks down at his feet, guilt washing over him like a cold wave.
Who would have thought that one of the most revered commanders of G7 Security would be as helpless as this?
After a while, Emilia calmed down and collected herself. She had harbored such emotions for a long time, once they were out she felt relieved but not enough to forgive him completely.
Returning to her seat, she looked at her brother for a while before speaking, “What brings you here?”
“I’m sorry for leaving you alone to suffer. I have returned only to make up to you and my niece, please.” During his career, Daniel has been a stranger to tenderness, yet he begged for the first time in the gentlest manner he could muster.
“For the sake of my niece and you as well, please give me a chance,” he pleaded.
Emilia shook uncontrollably at the mention of her daughter. ‘Perhaps I should give him a chance. After all, Jessica lacks a father figure.’ She thought.
Oblivious to this, Daniel continued, “Trust me; I know what kind of suffering you both have been through over the years. I know you loathe me. But please give me a chance to make amends to you both.”
Emilia was silent; she took the picture frame on her table and looked at the image of Jessica, sighing lightly she spoke up, “All right, I’ll give you a chance. I’m doing this because she needs a father figure in her life. But let me tell you- never do anything to upset her.”
“And just to be clear, the fact that you are allowed around us doesn’t mean I have forgiven you.”
“Yes!” Daniel nodded in affirmation. He knew it would take more than words to make her forgive him for the pain he had inflicted upon her.
Looking at her watch, she claimed, “It’s time to pick up Jessica.”
Meanwhile, inside the elementary classroom, the teacher was nowhere to be seen!
A group of young girls had surrounded a young girl. A young girl dressed in branded clothes was gloating with delight, holding a bow up high.
On the other hand, another young girl was trying to take to bow from her hand.
The one holding the bow grew impatient and shouted at the other, “Don’t you know who you are? How dare you try to outshine me, Jessica? You don’t know you’re place.”
Jessica Carter did not respond and just focused on getting her bow back.
Unsatisfied with her unresponsiveness, the young girl became aggressive with her words, “Jessica, I’m warning you, behave, or I have everyone g**g up on you. You are the poorest amongst us in this class. Do not think you can use your beauty and smarts to overshadow us. You stupid bastard.”
Her eyes reddened, and Jessica sobbed pitifully, “No, don’t call me that, I’m not…”
“Listen I am the boss of this place hence you are who I say you are. You had better start acting like one. Now do as I say and kneel.” The young girl’s words were cruel and ruthless. The rest of the class laughed at the show playing in front of them.
Daniel and Emilia Carter had just entered the class when they overhead the conversation. Immediately, she rushed forward to console her daughter, lifting Jessica into her arms.
“What happened to you dear?” She asked worriedly, her eyes burning with anger.
Jessica couldn’t withhold her tears any longer upon seeing her mother. She sobbed until her body trembled, “Mama, Nicole Watt has said that I am not as good as them and I am of a lower status in this class, and that she is the boss of me. If I do not do what she does, she will let everyone beat me up…”
What?
Gripped with rage, Emilia couldn’t hold it in any longer. She had been aware of Nicole’s behavior for some time now, she always picked on the weaker children in her class, and today, Jessica was her target.
It stunned me to see the inhumane treatment Jessica was facing at such an age.
Daniel approached Emilia, stretching her arms she stroked Jessica’s hair as he consoled her dearly, “They’re wrong to treat her like that. You are worth more than that and don’t let anybody tell you otherwise.”
Jessica sobbed and replied through hiccups, “Mommy, who is he, and is what the man saying true?”
“He is your uncle, Daniel Carter, he just returned from abroad and yes Jessica, he is telling you the truth. Never let anyone hurt your self-esteem.” Emilia Carter affirmed.
Jessica was overwhelmed with joy as she hugged Daniel’s neck tightly. Daniel was equally swamped with tenderness and affection as he reciprocated the hug.
Emilia observed the scene from the sideline. She beamed with joy as her only brother was now a part of her daughter’s life. He could be the father figure her daughter needed.
Nicole Watt spoke sarcastically, “He is just your uncle, why are you this happy? Does he have money and power? My mommy says that you can only be regarded as a high-class person if you have money and power. Your family is poor, Jessica. Your relatives have taken your family fortune away, you are now bottom feeders struggling to survive.”
