HOUSE ZERO

793 Words
We flew back to Atlanta with the desert girls in FBI plane. Six girls, plus Imani, plus us. Seven white dresses in a row in a government jet that smelled like oil and coffee. Mrs. Holt didn't come. FBI left her in doll house with social worker because Judge Holt's lawyer argued dementia, not trafficking, until they found basement. Basement had second doll house. Smaller. No dolls. Just dresses. 14 dresses. All size 6. All tagged with years: 1998-2017. Before The Vow community existed. Judge Holt started long before Eleanor. On flight, Lena sat next to me, holding my hand, her old phone charging. "You burned your chair," she said. "But you didn't burn what was under it." What was under it? Lena showed me video from her phone. Six years of night videos, filmed from woods near black lake. Video: Eleanor and Mae, 2019, dragging something heavy from laundry house to lake. Not a body. A safe. Big safe. They sank it in lake center, where trap door is. "House Zero bunker is under lake, yes. But under bunker is another vault. Mae told me before she died - or before she almost died. She said Eleanor's mother started in 1972. Not with wives. With daughters. Real daughters. Who got pregnant June 14th. They hid them under lake until birth, then sold babies." I felt sick. Priya, across aisle, heard and leaned in. "That safe you saw sinking? That's why concrete trucks always came at night. Not for houses. For vault." Rollins, sitting behind us with Simone cuffed next to him, said: "We have dive team going now. Cobb County lake is drained for construction. They can get it." We landed PDK at 6 a.m., June 13th. One day before June 14th. My original wedding anniversary, and the day Judge Holt's daughter died, and the day every contract says return. The Vow community was yellow tape now. FBI everywhere. House One pantry open, Kevin gone - ambulance took him to Grady, concrete cut off his chest, alive, but charged as co-conspirator because of insurance paper. Master closet: concrete dug out, but Mae was gone - taken to hospital too. Laundry house: washer one open, hatch open, ladder down. First time in six houses history, men in suits going down, not wives. I went down. House Zero. It was not a bunker. It was a house. Full house. Kitchen, two bedrooms, bathroom, solar lights, food storage, water filters, even a small library. And walls covered in names. Written in marker, lipstick, blood: Every girl who hid there. LENA 2018 - 14 MONTHS PRIYA 2019 - 3 WEEKS SIMONE 2018 - 2 WEEKS (crossed out, with "TRAITOR" next to it) ZURI 2020 - 6 MONTHS IMANI 2025 - 2 DAYS (she wrote it on jet) And 20 more names. Girls Mae hid before she was caught. At far wall, a second hatch, smaller, rusted, labeled VAULT 1972 in faded paint. FBI dive team called from above: "We have safe! It's open! Water damage but..." Radio crackled: "Detective Rollins, you need to see this. Not money. Not contracts." We climbed back up, ran to lake. Lake was half drained now, mud everywhere, smell of rot. Safe was open on bank. Inside, not money. Inside: 30 small white dresses. Newborn size. And 30 birth certificates. All June 14th birthdays. All mothers: Name: VOW, MOTHER UNKNOWN. Father: HOLT or WILLIAMS or CARTER or... Kevin's last name was Williams. Judge Holt's last name Holt. Rollins' real father's last name Carter. Lena gasped. "My last name is Carter. My mom said my dad left before birth. June 14th, 2006." Rollins dropped to knees in mud. "My mother... Patricia... she told me my real father died June 14th. Car crash. She said he was size 6? No, she said..." Simone, still cuffed, looked in safe and said flat: "My mother didn't sell wives. She sold babies first. Wives were cover. She needed young size 6 girls because size 6 girls have size 0 babies easier. Less risk. She picked June 14th because that's when her mother opened clinic. June 14th, 1972, first illegal adoption clinic under lake. She turned clinic into community in 2012 to get more girls." Eleanor, sitting on ground now, cuffed to FBI car, concrete still on dress, heard Simone and screamed: "DON'T TELL THEM! IT WAS MERCY! THOSE GIRLS WERE TEEN MOMS! THEY DIDN'T WANT BABIES!" Lena picked up one tiny dress. Size 0. "Where are babies now?" she whispered. Eleanor looked at lake, then at Judge Holt's van still taped, then at Rollins. "Some became judges," she said. "Some became detectives. Some became wives." Rollins stood, mud on knees, looking at safe, at birth certificates, at Eleanor. "My birthday is June 14th, 1998," he said.
