Moon in the Dark
Moon In The Dark

“I've already read so many myths about the love between the moon and the sun,” uttered Mom while she was gazing up at the crescent-shaped celestial body in the night sky. “But I still don't get why people are so hyped about it.”
I looked at her, confused. “Isn't it romantic that the moon and the sun are chasing each other every day, Mom?”
“And who said they're chasing each other?” She smiled, shifting her eyes to me. “It's only the moon who's chasing.”
“Huh?”
Mom chuckled. She planted a soft kiss on my head and gently pushed the ground with her feet to sway the swing. “Do you know what the sun did to make the moon fall for him?”
“No...”
“The moon got her light from the sun,” she said, “and because of that, she cherished him like he was the one who gave meaning to her life.”
“Exactly!” I lifted my head, trying to gaze at her face. “The sun gave her light. It means he cares for her! So why are you saying it’s one-sided?”
“Ah, darling...” She stroked the strands of my hair and put them behind my ear. “But not all people who showed you motives will commit themselves to you.”
That made me silent.
“The sun is just like them. Just because he gave her light, doesn’t mean he felt the same way.”
I paused. “Then... he didn't do it because he loves her?”
“Hm-mm,” she replied. “The sun only gave her light because he has plenty of light to offer. Notice how the sun's brightness never lessens during the day.”
My lips formed into a frown. I don't know what to feel. All this time, the sun wasn't a charming celestial being I thought he’d be.
“I better tell about this to my friends!” I exclaimed. “The Sun is a jerk for putting Moon’s hopes up and leaving her alone just like that!”
“The truth is,” said Mom, “the moon wasn’t really alone. There is someone who’s always been there to make her brighter.”
“Really? Wasn’t he the sun?”
“No.” She gazed at me with a smile. “He was the darkness.”
“The darkness?”
She nodded. “From the very start, the darkness has always been there beside her. And without the moon noticing, she has always been there beside him too—granting him light which he lacked.”
Unconsciously, I looked up and watched the moon as well as the darkness of the sky.
“Together, the moon and the darkness created a wonderful sky which we are beholding every single night.”
My lips parted in awe. I never thought of the night sky that way. All this time, the darkness partook in the magnificence of the moon too. How come I just realized this now?
“Were the stars their children?” I asked.
“Perhaps.” Mom chuckled and lifted her hand as though reaching for the moon. “Look, the moon is crescent-shaped right now. That means the darkness is hugging her.”
I stared at it and gasped. “Wow. You're right, Mom!”
Before, I used to look at the other phases of the moon as incomplete. But now, maybe the moon has always been whole—with the darkness embracing her.
I smiled. Probably, from now on, it will not just the moon I’ll fall in love with. Because half of my heart will love the darkness too.
I glanced at mother. “But why are you saying this, Mom?”
“Because soulmates are all born similar with the moon and the darkness. We are born complete but not balanced. Some are born too nice, some too stubborn. Others are too loud, while others are too quiet. The world has always been surrounded with contradicted inklings... So, sweetheart, find someone that can balance with your soul. Choose a love the same as how the moon and the darkness can balance each other to create a magnificent night sky.
