Chapter 3: The awkward third wheel

When I walked through the front door, I saw that no, Mason and Rachel had not gotten married, or kissed or anything else. I breathed a sigh of relief but not for too long because I did notice they were sat very close to one another on the sofa, Rachel whispering some joke into his ear that had him laughing. No. No way. I took my coat off and kicked my shoes off before running into the living room and diving between them on the sofa so that they were forced to move apart and make room for me. I was squished between them, but I didn’t care. I was still half laying on the sofa and quickly pulled myself into a sitting position and wrapping both my arms around each of them, grinned happily, “hey guys, what’s up!” Rachel did not look impressed at all, but she didn’t look angry either, she was more flustered than anything and threw on a fake happy smile when she replied, “hey sweetie, where have you been?” “Just town, nowhere special.” I looked at Mason, who didn’t seem bothered at all that I was there. Hmm. I thought he would have been annoyed. I don’t know why, but I really wanted to see how far I could go with him, so I threw my feet up and laid them across his legs and leaned my head against Rachel. Raising my eyebrows at Mason, I asked, “so Mace, you excited about changing later?” He didn’t push my legs off him like I thought he would and sarcastically replied, “yeah, I’m super excited about my body tearing itself apart later.” I laughed but made no effort to move or add anything else to the conversation. Nope, I didn’t even move when their movie started, I stayed there like the biggest puppy ever, lying across them and making sure they stayed apart. Yes, I was that annoying person. I didn’t know why I felt so strongly about Mason, all I knew is I felt just how mom had described being in love felt for her, like you’d met your best friend and everything was so new and exciting, and you couldn’t wait to see them again when you were apart, every text sending flutters through your heart hoping it was him and that he was all you could think of. I felt like that, but I shouldn’t have, we didn’t have any kind of relationship, friendship or otherwise, and yet, I felt as strongly as if we did. He probably wouldn’t want me anyway, if he ever found out I was an omega, he would run. Werewolves typically liked strong and dominant partners for a mate. They had a higher chance of surviving in the harsh world of supernaturals, the stronger they were, the less chance of a broken heart losing them to death. Werewolves were not typically very affectionate unless mated to one another either, in fact, we usually didn’t like being touched at all, I was the rare exception and I knew it was to do with my omega side. I was super affectionate, and I loved being touched on the shoulder, or my hair being ruffled or being cuddled, literally any touch I craved, and I was surprised that the pack were as affectionate with me as they were, no one had noticed this or picked up on how unusual it was because as I said, werewolves were only affectionate with their own mate outside of that they were cold d***s. I thought about this some more and realized they were affectionate with children too, then I remembered everyone thought I had the mind of a child. Of course they wouldn’t find it weird showing me affection, I mentally rolled my eyes at that and hoped I still had a chance with Mason, I was hoping no one had said anything to him yet about me. I think mom caught on pretty quick how I felt about Mason because she saw us all on the sofa and how I was watching Mason more than the movie and her protective side had her calling me out to go help her with shopping. I helped her unload, and she managed to keep me with her for the rest of the evening, helping her with dinner and other small tasks to keep me busy until it was fifteen minutes until midnight. I was helping mom clear the last of the dishes when I tripped over the chair leg and the plate I was holding launched itself into her a*s before bouncing off and smashing onto the floor. I knew before she even turned around she was going to scream in anger and my eyes were as wide as saucers when she met them. My big scared eyes had her take a big breath, and slowly she gritted through her teeth, “just go and get ready to change.” I don’t know why I tip toed out of the room, but I did, and I kept tip toeing until I reached the stairs. I raced up to my bedroom and halfway shut the door, so I could get back out. I stripped n***d and got onto all fours and began the painful process of changing. My body pulled and twisted in unnatural angles and the feel of bone cutting through flesh was the part that always had me feeling like I couldn’t live through the pain any longer, but with the help of the full moon tonight it was smoother and quicker as she helped my body guide itself into the form she wanted it to be tonight and within ten minutes I was lying on the floor panting heavily. I caught a glance at myself in the mirror and saw a honey brown colored wolf looking back at me. My eyes were a strong dark yellow tonight and I knew we didn’t look like the typical wolf, we were twice as big, making us appear more deadly, but beside size, we were basically the same. I felt hungry, even though we had eaten dinner before changing. Using my nose, I nudged the door open and padded down the stairs to meet the others. I should set up a camera one day, it would be funny to see a living room full of wolves. It had always been dangerous living in the city, and the rest of the pack that wasn’t living with us were out of the city where it was safer and easier to walk and hunt outside. Markus had found safe shortcuts overtime that led into the woods about two miles from our home, so we followed him. Markus’ wolf form was gray and white, while moms was white with a hint of red in areas. I looked around for Mason by scent and found him. Mason’s wolf was gray and he looked very handsome to my wolf eyes. Luckily, there were only eight of us that stayed at this house, I could only imagine how much more difficult it would be trying to sneak around thirty wolves in the city, at best, having only eight wolves we would look like a random pack of wolves who had ventured too far into the city, still terrifying for any human that would see us but at least they’d be thinking wolf and not werewolf. Markus led the way, and we all left by the backyard. We followed Markus through the small bush at the back of the fence and squeezed through the hole we had made there for easy and more discreet access. I, of course, got my fur trapped on something, so I was holding up the rest of the pack. Mason came up beside me trying to figure out what was wrong, he clocked on pretty quick and gave a wolf’s version of an eye roll before using his teeth to chew through the parts of my fur that had got caught on something. When I was free, I ran to catch up with Markus and the other four, who had realized we weren’t behind them and stopped to wait for us. Markus growled his annoyance at me and I pushed my head into his neck as an apology. He touched his nose to mine and I knew we were good. We carried on again once Mason and the others caught up. We trotted quietly along the backlit streets, making sure to use quiet streets so as to not bump into any drunk people coming back from a night of partying or even people who might have worked late. I enjoyed walking along the streets when it was dark like this, the soft glow of the streetlights and shops that were now closed to the public always gave me that cozy vibe. We reached a drain and Markus along with Mason used their teeth to pull it open. Our teeth in wolf form were strong enough to chew through metal, so though it was difficult to open a drain in wolf form as we only had teeth to use, it was still very doable. One by one, we jumped down and ran along the familiar tunnels until we came to the one that would lead us to the woods. These tunnels weren’t very far down, so we could jump out without having to use the ladders. When we were all outside again, we ran along the quiet street which led directly into the woods. Once we were in, I ran off at top speed, the feel of the wind whipping my face feeling so good.
