Continuous fire rang out through the blackened night stained with the intermittent light coming from a multitude of weapons. Thomas was at the top of the fort on a mounted MG-34 Machine Gun spraying down the rapidly encroaching Germans as his squad below fought through roving patrols of German infantrymen as well as their faithful hounds. As Thomas was firing on the men below, he heard a movement behind him and as quick as lightning he drew his sidearm and fired. The sneaky German who was about to clobber him with a shovel staggered backwards and Thomas fired two more shots into the man's chest.
