Thomas coiled his body in Smith's direction and then he pushed explosively off the damp soil with his left foot. His boot left an imprint of about two inches deep as soil exploded behind him from the force at which he pushed off. He hurled through the air and caught Smith around the waist to which Smith let out a sudden wheeze. They flew about two feet before the hidden explosive went off and the force only propelled them even further.
Thomas and Smith wound up smacking into a tree with a resounding thud. Thomas got the brunt of the blow. Having seen the tree coming, he had twisted himself in mid-air so as to prevent Smith from being crushed between the tree and Thomas's own reinforced body.
