Ch 1
Susan has just finished serving drinks to a couple of college students when she was pushed from behind. Glancing behind her, she noticed two drunk guys trying to start a fight. Not on my watch, Susan said out loud before getting in the middle. The guys were huge but she was not someone to be ignored either. After 5 minutes of trying to calm the guys down, Susan was hailed as the hero by the whole club. She walked back to the bar, dancing her way through the crowd that gathered to cheer her on. Robert, or as he preferred to be called, Robbie, was behind the counter serving drinks.
“How do not get afraid, Susan, those guys are like twice your size,” said Robie, handing her the drinks.
“Well, when you decide to own a club, you kinda have to be tough. Sometimes, that’s the only way guys will understand you,” replied Susan, remembering the early days when she had almost been punched while trying to break up a fight.
“The more power to you then, you put them in their place” cheered Robbie.
Susan had opened this club, The Beat when she had graduated from college. She had some experience with bartending back in college and she always dreamed of owning her own business. As if someone had heard her, the club she had worked at had to close up because the owner wanted to move away. Susan had seized the opportunity with both hands. As if luck was still on her side, she had been lucky to easily find some investors.
The deed of the club had gone through smoothly, giving Susan the ownership in just a few months. After that she had called her friend, Jenny, to help with the furnishing. They had decided to change the name from the Grind to The Beat, giving it a more classy taste. They had changed the whole look out of the place, making it more classy and modern. She had live music playing every weekend. But the most surprising idea had been to turn it into a coffee house during the day. Susan knew it would be tedious to take care of it both day and night but she had managed because this was her dream.
Just in a few months, they had turned huge profits. Since it was located close to a local campus, they always had customers. During the days, the students would come to study and drink coffee, while during the night they would party like there is no tomorrow. Good thing she had two awesome managers to take care of both businesses. Roland managed the night club while Fiona managed the coffee shop.
Susan had finally gotten done with the paperwork before walking out, only to see that Robbie was working alone. She had grabbed the tray and started to wait on the tables while Roland had decided to serve behind the bar. She was lucky to have found such good people to work for her that sometimes she wished they had been her real birth family.
Susan had been an orphan at age 5 with no pictures of her mom and dad. When the child services officer had found her sitting in front of the bus stand, she had taken her to her home and fed her. Susan knew this because that night she had finally stopped feeling cold.
Susan had spent her life living through one foster home after another. When she had turned 18 and moved out of the system, she had managed to land a scholarship at Wright state university in Business Management. It had been a lucky day for her and that luck had never run out. She had gotten good grades all through college, had saved up tons while bartending and now she owned the very club. Life couldn’t have been better for her.
In a way, Susan was thankful to have grown up the way she did because it had given her everything she ever wished. She had a successful business that was the talk of the town and she had great friends who were always there for her. The only thing missing from her life was a partner. After all, she was only 23, not 50 so she had plenty of time to find the perfect man or so she thought.
Turns out guys are jerks, always ready to talk with their fists than with their mouth. If she kept working at this place day and night without going anywhere else, she would never find him as Robbie always liked to point out. If only Robbie hadn’t been happily committed to his girlfriend Susan would have asked him out.
Susan started to clean the tables when she felt a hand on her waist, not again, She thought before whirling around to be met with a set of mesmerizing blue eyes. Glancing up, she saw him smirking, which gave her the courage to push him away. She sees guys like him all the time, trying to flirt with her or other girls. Guys who think they can melt away any girl’s panties just by looking at them. The type of guys who were too confident, bordering on arrogant, the playboy types, and looked like Mr. blue eyes might be one of them.
“Excuse me, but this waist belongs to me, it’s not public property, so do you mind?”
“I do mind actually, see it was just begging me to hold it and it fits perfectly in my hands.”
“And about half other guys think that but doesn’t mean that it's OK to be groped by drunken boys'' Susan said before slapping his hands away. She was walking away when she felt his hands on her arms, trying to stop her. “Do you not understand? I am not public property, keep your hands to yourself, Mister before I throw you out.”
“Wow, slow down I am just trying to apologize. Hi, my name is Zack, I am a professor here at the university. A bunch of my colleagues dared me to flirt with you because I have been staring at you since you broke up that fight. The way you handled those jerks, it was pretty awesome.” She was used to guys flirting with her but he had taken this too far.
