Chapter 3

Leilys P.O.V I woke up by a pillow smashing into my head. "Yalla Leily! It's breakfast!", Ahmad yelled giggling, and ran away. I groaned and got out of bed. Ahmad was a six year old boy, who was one of the kids who lived here at the refugee camp with his parents. We were about forty people living here, all coming from different places, but we all considered each other family. Since almost all of us had lost someone, fleeing from the war. And this had been my home, on and of, since I came to US. But I had lived here permanently since I was sixteen. That's when the foster system lost hope in finding someone who would adopt me, so they put me here for good. It was much better living here than being in the system. I actually felt at home here. When I got to the kitchen I saw Ahmad. I sneaked behind him and tickled him. He burst out laughing and collapsed to the floor. "No one wakes up amto Leily like that without getting tickled!", I said while tickling him. Amto basically meant aunt. Which we basically called each other. We either called each other aunt, uncle (amo), sometimes sister or brother. Or just by each others names. But the kids like calling us aunt or uncle, since they probably didn't have a biological one. I stopped tickling him and he was panting. I helped him up and got breakfast. I was supposed to be at work at seven thirty a.m and it was now six forty. I quickly finished eating and got ready for work. I headed out the door and started walking down the steps. I didn't live in one of those refugee camps that you saw not he tv. You know, just a bunch of tents and stuff. We lived in a refugee camp just a little outside of New York. It consisted of one compound apartment building, which had three floors and six small apartments total, and five small two-room solo apartments in front of it. The whole area was surrounded by forrest. It wasn't much and there weren't any asphalt roads that led here, only gravel roads. But after all it was my home. As I got out of the compound building I saw my brother, my biological brother, and his two children. My four years old nephew, Yousef, ran up to me and hugged me. I picked him up and said 'good morning', before letting him down. He continued to make his way into the compound, where the other kids were. I walked over to my brother, kissing him on the cheek and saying 'good morning' to my one years old niece, Annayel. "Gotta go?", my brother, Christian asks and I nod. He kissed me on my cheek and started walking towards the compound and I started heading towards work. I walked out of the café where I worked. The time was eleven p.m. and it was pitch black outside. Today was Saturday, and the incident with the twins/my bosses had happened on Wednesday. I hadn't worked for them, nor had their mother giving me another request, which meant I hadn't seen them since. I had however thought about them everyday. Which was kind of annoying, but at the same time not. I couldn't get the picture of their handsome selfs out of my head. And how embarrassing it had been! Either way I would have to see them on the job-interview on Monday, today was Tuesday. I was pretty sure I was going to fail the interview. I was walking through a, let just say 'not so good' area when I heard someone yell my name. "Leo!". I cringed hearing him yell my name. Damnit! I tried walking faster, but I feel a hand grab at my wrist. "Where you goin' huh?", he ask and I yanked my hand out of his hold. It was Brandon. We used to be in a relationship that wasn't the best. He used to abuse and hit me, but luckily I'd got out of it. Although it didn't make him stop harassing me whenever we met. He had four other guys with him, and I knew I was in trouble. "Get the f**k out of my face", I told him, trying to keep my voice steady. "You f*****g b***h", he said and smacked me across my face. I pulled back my hand and saw blood that had come of my lip. s**t. I tried to make a run for it, but it was to late. One of the other guys wrapped his arms around me. Holding down my arms and body. I saw Brandons disgusting grin as he looked at me. "Why did you have to f*****g leave! I gave you everything you w***e and you just up and left, just like that", he yelled and directed a punch at my stomach. I wanted to fold double at the pain. The guy that was holding me let go and I fell to the ground. I could hear them laughing at me. I guess when Brandon media the first punch, he allowed the other guys to direct punches and kicks at me. Pain shot through me like lightning every time I got a punch or kick. And with every punch/kick the pain got worse. After a while they all took of, before anyone could catch them. I laid there for a couple of minutes, regaining a steady breathing. Slowly I pushed myself up. The pain shot through me and it felt like my whole body was burning. I stand up. The first thing I though of was the twins house. It was the nearest place. Slowly I begin to walk, but every time I put my weight on one of the legs, pain shoots up through that side and my knee folds a little. But I keep walking. It started pouring down rain and I started to shiver. But the cold almost soothed my injuries. All of a sudden I find myself walking up to the twins house. I was walking on the path that led to the front door. The door opened and I saw two figures standing in the doorway. My hair and clothes were soaked and I couldn't stop shivering... it was so cold. "Leo?", one of them yells. I felt everything spin before the darkness took over my body.
