The next morning I made my way downstairs to the kitchen where Bridget and Vicky were bickering with each other while Rose stood off to the side looking on with wide eyes.
“You know what? I give up” Vicky said throwing her hands up in the air and turning to dump her empty bowl into the sink.
“Am I missing something?” I asked heading over to the fridge in search of some orange juice. Travis was perched up on the counter munching on his cereal and snickering at the arguing girls.
“Bridget wants to go dress shopping” Vicky muttered, more like grouched, turning to lean back against the counter with her arms crossed over her chest “And you know how much I hate shopping”
It was true Vicky hated nothing more in the world than shopping especially with Bridget who was as picky as they come.
“But Rachel still needs a dress for the party tomorrow and she has to look perfect for-.” Bridget was saying but Vicky cut her off with a look.
“For Tristan?” she asked and I froze in the middle of pouring myself some juice. Rose flinched for some reason but it was barely noticeable.
“News flash Bridget it’s all an act, Rachel’s leaving us after the engagement to be with Hayden remember?” Vicky pointed out getting Rose to relax. Setting the juice carton down I turned to look at both Vicky and Bridget.
“She’s leaving-.” Bridget muttered lowly then cleared her throat looking at Vicky with sad eyes.
“But I’m still going to make it seem perfect even if it’s all fake” Vicky gave Bridget’s puppy dog face one look then nodded giving a long sigh in defeat and shot a playful glare at the mother to be.
“Okay fine we’ll go dress shopping” Bridget grinned hopping up and down in place while clapping her hands together in excitement “Yay! You’re the best V!”
Vicky grumbled, pushing off the counter to start towards the kitchen door. She paused in the doorway then glanced back at all of us .
“Damn right I am” then she disappeared out the door only waiting long enough to call back “I’m going to get dressed!”
I breathed a laugh and shook my head as I took a swing of my orange juice. Bridget was grinning widely like she’d won the lottery.
“Shopping spree!” she chimed then rushed out the kitchen probably to go get ready for the mall. Travis crunched down on a mouthful of cereal then looked at me.
“Is it always like that?” he asked blinking at me. Finishing off my juice, I set the empty glass in the sink.
“Wait until they have to pick out a movie to rent, talk about the Note Book versus Godzilla” I muttered thinking of that time it took us an entire hour just so that Bridget could flash her puppy dog look and end up winning the 56 minute dispute with the Note Book.
“I swear if I have to see the Note Book one more time I’m going to shoot myself” I uttered more to myself than anyone else but Travis heard and cleared his throat hopping down from the counter.
“Who wouldn’t?” he asked popping his empty bowl into the sink then stretched out his sore muscles “Well I guess it’s time to head out, I’ve got training with my brother so I’ll see you whenever”
I nodded while setting the juice carton back into the fridge “See you then” I mumbled as Travis left heading out the kitchen door to the backyard and into the forest towards the clearing.
Rose was still standing off in the corner with a shy look about her. I turned looking straight at her trying to find something to say.
“So…you want to go shopping?” she instantly perked up at that and nodded with a wide grin plastered across her petite face hiding behind big square glasses.
“Well then let’s go get dressed before Sugar and Spice start bickering again” I insisted reffering to both Bridget and Vicky while heading out the door with Rose hurrying after.
“Those two are like total opposites” Rose said, her worn grey slippers dragging across the wooden flooring while her oversized T-Shirt hung off one of her shoulders.
“Tell me about it” I muttered rolling my eyes when I heard the two in Bridget’s room still going at it. Kyle was already at training which meant they had the space to yank each other’s throats out.
Nothing good can ever come from that.
-----------------------------
“My feet are killing me” Vicky complained as we walked through the mall. We hadn’t been there for more than five minutes and she was already complaining.
“Hay no complaining, you’re the one that gave into the famous 'Bridget look” I muttered knowing all too well that when it came to Bridget’s puppy dog face Vicky was as weak as they come.
I bumped my shoulder into Vicky’s when she only grunted in reply with her arms crossed over her chest.
“Oh my gosh Camille La Vie” Bridget freaked rushing for the dress shop looking like a little kid on Christmas morning. Rose and I shared a glance while Vicky groaned.
“Well let’s go dress shopping” I said hooking my arm into Rose’s then dragged her towards the store. Vicky grumbled but followed with her arms crossed over her chest. When I got to the door Bridget was in front of me in a flash.
“Go try these on” she ordered shoving an entire store full of dresses into my arms and pushing me in the direction of the changing room. I stumbled and was about to protest when “Now” I really didn’t stand a chance against Bridget.
Nodding I turned and slipped into the dressing room with my closet in hand. After a two hour long debate on which of the two final dresses I should ware, the red or black, Bridget decided on the black then stuck pore Rose into one of the stalls.
“Here” was the only thing Bridget said as she loaded Rose with her own runway show of dresses.
Vicky was the first to find a dress, she was always, seeing as the only thing she wanted was to get out of the shop. She chose a pretty dark blue and navy dress with a low V cut and flared out at the waist.
“Common doll let’s see it” Bridget called when Rose never came out of the stall. We heard some rustling then Rose’s tiny voice.
“I look like a clown” she said and Bridget looked at me with a gaze that spoke a million words. Rose was afraid to show her figure and it made sense since she only ever wore pants.
“No you don’t now come out and show us that pretty self of yours” I called with Vicky only grouching in agreement. There was a moment of silence then we heard the stall door click and Rose peaked out.
“I look terrible” she mumbled hiding her face behind a ray of chestnut curls and trying to shrink back into the stall when Bridget grabbed her arm and yanked her out to stand in front of the full-length mirror "There now don't you just look stunning?" Bridget asked hands resting on Rose's shoulders to keep her in place forcing her to look at herself.
Rose wore a dark red strapless dress that hugged her figure and flared out just above mid-thigh, like a mermaid dress except short. She looked great showing leg for the first time since I met her.
"Oh my gosh Rose, you look amazing" I chimed happily and Bridget grinned squeezing her shoulders before playing with her hair.
“Just some makeup and a bit of hair work and the boys will be falling all over you” Bridget muttered while Rose just stared at herself in the mirror. Her petite frame made her look more feminine than ever in the dress.
“Wow” Rose breathed shocked and clearly stunned as she blinked at herself. I went over to place a gentle hand on her shoulder while Bridget still tried to find the right hair style for the party.
“Wow is right you’re rocking that dress right Vicky?” I asked and the strawberry blonde haired girl nodded still grumbling to herself “Yeah whatever”
I heard her b***h so I rolled my eyes and waved her off turning back to Rose who looked up at me.
“I never knew I could look this good” she said and I smiled at her faintly. She was small but had tanned skin and that wine glass shape with curvy hips and a small but visible chest.
“Just wait until we’re done with you, you’re going to look like a runway model for Victoria’s Secret” Bridget assured grinning then dropped Rose’s hair back to fall in loose waves around her bare shoulders. Rose suddenly squealed and pulled me into the tightest hug.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you” she chanted then moved on to Bridget who giggled and squealed along with her. Vicky was taken by surprise when Rose hugged her only standing frozen in the middle of it all.
“Thank you guys so much, you’re the best” Bridget and I exchanged looks then waved the girl off.
“Don’t mention it” Bridget said while I shot the brunette a warm hearted smile asking “What’re friends for?”
Rose looked so excited it was as if she was going to burst at any moment but she didn’t and Bridget had to shove her back into the changing room to get her out of the dress so we could pay for it. After that Bridget was the only one that needed a dress and one in particular caught my eye.
It was a dark purple dress with thin straps and went down to knee length. It was flowy and looked light. I went to grab it while Bridget was fussing over a pink dress she had on.
“How about this?” I asked holding the dress in her size up for her to see. Bridget looked at it with a frown probably thinking why on earth would I choose a dress like that for her but then her eyes softened when she realised what I was getting at.
“Y-Yeah okay” she stuttered taking the dress then disappeared into a stall. Bridget was pregnant, she was going to be a mom and so she needed to dress like one in dresses not too short or too tight for that matter.
“It’s going to take her some getting used to huh?” Vicky asked from beside me with her arms crossed over her chest. Rose sat on one of the seats looking at us with furrowed brows. I nodded.
“Yeah it’s going to take us all some getting used to” I said when Bridget came out of the stall dressed in the purple cocktail dress. It made her look mature and responsible.
“What do you think?” she asked spreading her arms out to her sides and doing a little twirl. The dress fit her perfectly in a way that still made her look young and carefree but sophisticated.
“You look perfect” I replied with a sincere smile and Vicky for the first time since we got to the mall actually grinned “Like a certified mommy”
Bridget shot Vicky a playful glare while I giggled and Rose sat silent not shore what she was missing.
“Wait until your baby daddy gets a load of you in that dress” I teased and this time it was Vicky’s turn to laugh. Bridget narrowed her eyes onto us but was smiling faintly. Her hand went to her stomach for a split second then dropped.
“Alright then let’s get me out of this dress so that we can go pay” Bridget announced heading back into the stall while Vicky groaned in approval.
“Finally, let’s go get something to eat, I’m starving” the strawberry blonde haired girl was already halfway to the register when Bridget came out of the stall dressed in her casual attire with her purse and the purple dress in hand. We followed Vicky to the register to pay.
“I second that” Rose said pointing at Vicky who was already thinking about what she was going to order at the dinner.
------------------------------
We were heading towards the dinner after nearly three hours of shopping when I accidentally knocked into someone inside the place.
“I’m so sorry I didn’t-.” I trailed when I noticed a guy with jet black hair and puppy brown eyes. He was tall and dressed in a pair of dark jeans, a tight fitted black V neck shirt with the sleeves pulled up and vans.
“Luna, ah here let me-.” he breathed with wide eyes then bent down to scoop up my dropped bags, handing to me with an apologetic look. I took my bags from him with furrowed eyebrows.
“Um thanks” I muttered glancing over his shoulder to where Vicky, Bridget and Rose were ordering by the counter. The guy awkwardly scratched at the back of his neck then held his hand out to me.
“No problem, the name’s Brett by the way” Brett introduced as I glimpsed down at his hand then took it with a tender smile.
“Rachel” I said shaking his hand once then let go to tuck a stray strand of hair behind my ear. Brett glanced to the side and following his gaze I noticed a guy with dark brown hair and the same puppy brown eyes leaning up against one of the dinner tables clearly waiting for Brett.
“I know who you are, Luna” I froze hearing him call me 'Luna' for the second time. I’d never seen him around the pack so I had no idea what he was getting at but everyone knew my mom was still Luna until my father stepped down then Nicole would become Luna.
“I’m not-.” I started to deny but he cut me off “You’re Alpha Caine’s next in line Luna, right?”
I opened my mouth to speak but closed it again. Alpha Caine, the Alpha of the Tyrant pack, my father’s enemy pack, Brett was a part of that pack.
“I-.” again I was cut short when the other guy came stalking up with his hands stuffed into the pockets of his black leather jacket.
“Brett!” he called catching Brett’s attention as well as Vicky, Bridget and Rose's who turned to look at what all the commotion was about.
“Beau” Brett acknowledge with a nod in Beau’s direction. The second guy, Beau who looked more built than Brett turned to me with a respectable look in his eye bowing his head in submission.
“Luna” he greeted shooting a look towards Brett before he turned back to me.
“Sorry about my brother, we’ll leave you be” with that he started stalking off in the direction of the dinner’s exit pausing only to call back to his brother “You coming little bro?”
Brett looked at me then nodded about to head off when he stopped long enough to say with a bow of his head.
“It was nice meeting you, Luna” he turned to leave but I grabbed hold of his arm stopping him dead in his tracks.
“Rachel, call me Rachel” Brett smiled at me nodding before I let go of his arm and allowed him to disappear out the door after his older brother. Vicky came rushing over as soon as they were gone with Bridget and Rose trailing behind.
“Who were the hotties?” she asked suddenly very interested in the mall. I gave her a shrug still staring at the dinner exit while Rose carried the trey with our food.
“I don’t know” I said shooting a glance at Vicky before I turned and headed towards a nearby table to sit down with Rose. Bridget and Vicky exchanged looks like they were thinking the same thing then followed.
“So since you were too hung up on hottie one and hottie two I got you a sandwich and a coffee, enjoy” Bridget announced pushing the sandwich across the table towards me along with the coffee. I was staring at the dinner door deep in thought when a hand suddenly waves in front of my face.
“Um hello earth to Rachel, come in Rachel” Vicky said trying to catch my attention and bring it back to reality. I snapped out of it blinking and shook my head from side to side trying to clear it.
“Yeah sorry, thanks” I thanked picking up my cup and taking a sip of coffee while my eyes flickered to the doors again. Rose noticed but she didn’t say anything instead she just stayed quite as Bridget and Vicky argued on which one of the unknown guys was the hottest.
When we got home Dalton was in the kitchen along with Travis, Tristan and Kyle. I had just dropped my bags onto the kitchen table top when one of my father’s guards stepped into the room.
“Alphas your father would like to have a word with you in private concerning the Rogue infestation” the guard announced addressing both Dalton and me as he bowed his head to show respect and submission. Dalton looked to Tristan then nodded.
“Certainly” my brother answered for the both of us stepping towards the door to follow the guard that had already disappeared. I followed my brother out of the kitchen but not before glancing at Tristan who looked at me with a clenched jaw. Upstairs the guards held my father’s study door open for us motioning us in.
“You called father?” Dalton asked as I stood by the now closed door silent and with my head bowed. I wasn’t shore if my father was worthy of my respect anymore but if I showed my unwillingness to respect him I knew they’d suspect that something was up.
“Yes have a seat you two there are some things I’d like to discuss” our father said motioning towards the seats in front of his desk. Dalton stayed standing but I headed over to the sitting area off to the side and took a seat facing the fireplace.
“About the Rogues?” Dalton being the only one to say anything yet asked with his arms crossed over his toned chest hidden behind a black tight fitted T-shirt.
“They’ve been trailing too close to the northern border, I fear that their starting to get out of hand” our father explained with a nod in reply to Dalton’s question. I stayed quite looking at the map of the territory splayed out across the coffee table in front of me.
“A few Rogues are nothing we can’t handle father, some of our best Warriors are stationed along that border” Dalton reminded, taking on the full role of a true Alpha to be. I heard a chair move and knew that our father was up out of his desk chair.
“Right but a handful of Rogues is enough to cause some damages, damages that’ll leave us with weaknesses against the Tyrant pack” my father was smart. He thought through every possible way and strategy before even thinking about making a move. He took his role as a player in a chess match, taking time to make each move correctly in order to win.
“Alpha Caine and his Beta are in our custody father, they're no threat towards us” Dalton reasoned as I stared down at the map trying to see which rout would be the less likely for my father to suspect when Hayden and I just suddenly disappear the night of the party.
“But there’s still a Gamma and Luna leading their pack, they’ll want their Alpha back and they’ll come for him which means we can’t afford to be weak” I almost laughed at my father’s words. They weren’t going to come for their Alpha not when they have two innocent wolves, Hayden and I, willing to break them out from the inside.
“Then what? We kill the Rogues before they become a threat to us?” Dalton asked and I knew from years of experience that our father was a man who had no remorse for anything when it came to his pack.
“To protect the pack we have to do everything in our power to keep our members protected” my father said with a nod of his head, dancing around a simple ‘yes’.
Dalton took a deep breath, nodding his head in agreement “Good now I want every one of my best fighters out on that border and ready to strike on command” my brother bowed his head in submission towards his Elder “Yes Alpha” Dalton then turned on his heels and headed out the door leaving me alone with my father.
“Rachel? I hear you’re getting along quite well with Tristan” I closed my eyes since my back was turned to my father and took a deep breath. I should’ve known that would be the reason why he’d want to see me, the engagement was all he cared about, insuring that our blood line stayed strong.
“Of course, it’s what you wanted, isn’t it?” I asked eyes still focused on the map, planning my escape from my father’s reign. He stepped to the side where a floor to wall window sat revealing the back yard and the forest beyond.
“What I want is a pure Alpha blood line so your children would be strong enough to be-.” I cut him off having heard the same words coming from him many times in the past. He’d always say that he wanted his grandchildren to be powerful “To be born Warriors and ideal Leaders”
my father turned away from the window to look at me but I refused to meet his gaze instead keeping my eyes on the pack territory.
“Precisely, the next generation of our kind has to be strong, you as Alpha should know that by now” he said with a nod in agreement to my statement. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath stopping myself before I could snap at him.
“But why? Why make them into fighters?” I asked opening my eyes and for the first time looking up to meet my father’s gaze “Because the world is a battle field and in order to survive you have to be strong enough to defend yourself”
He was talking about enemies and war for whatever reason. Over the decades a total of three wars had been declared under the werewolf population. None like human wars, no, more bloody with less humanity involved much like an animalistic s*******r.
“Even when it costs you your rights?” the words slipped out of my mouth before I even had a chance to stop them but my father only nodded.
“Especially when it costs you your rights” he turned back to the window most likely looking out onto pack members doing whatever in the afternoon sun.
“The wedding will take place one week after the engagement as planned” my father announced glancing out the window one last time before he turned and once again went back to his desk chair.
“You’re dismissed” when I stood to leave, the territory was already mapped out in my mind and I knew exactly which rout to take and whe.
n “Yes father” I said with a bow of my head in submission and respect then I left to go get ready for graduation.
------------------------------
It was the after party for graduation and everyone was gathered in the school gym. Our black graduation robes were abandoned and I was dressed in a little blue number with black platform heels. My parents were talking to the school principle and my brother and Nicole were chatting to some old high school friends.
I was off to the side laughing with Travis and Matt. Matt was one of Kyle’s friends, he’s a Hunter in my father’s pack and by far one of the best we’ve got.
“So how are things going with you and Nicky?” Travis asked plastic drink cup in hand while the other was stuck in his jean pocket. He was leaning up against one of the gym walls near the door that led to the football field.
“It’s going great man, Nicky and I finished mating last week” Matt said daydreaming about his girlfriend, Nicky, who used to date Kyle before he found out that he was mated to Bridget. Matt and Nicky weren’t mates but they might as well have been from the way they acted around each other.
Just then Nicky came up dressed in a bronze dress that brought out her skin tone.
“And he asked me to marry him” Nicky announced flashing a diamond ring at me with an excited grin. I smiled faintly, sad that I wasn't experiencing that kind of joy and was supposedly marrying the wrong person.
“Really? When’s the date set for?” I asked trying to join in on the conversation. I had my own drink in one hand and the other was wrapped around my torso as I shuffled my weight from foot to foot.
“Next year June 7th” she said her arm hooked through Matt’s as she smiled up at him placing a quick kiss to his cheek.
“That’s great, you two are perfect for each other” I complimented knowing that it was true. They were two halves of a whole like mates but without the strong bond. It was then that I felt like someone was watching me and from the tingles that went through my spine I knew it was Hayden so glancing across the room I noticed him near the gym doors, lending back against the wall with his arms crossed.
“Rachel? Are you listening?” Nicky asked snapping me out of my trans and turning my attention back to her.
“Oh uh sorry what was that?” I asked sneaking glances every now and then to where Hayden stood. Travis followed my gaze and gave me a knowing lookmost likely having heard from Tristan that Hayden and I were mates.
“I was telling you about his mother and how she acted after the engagement” Nicky explained but I wasn’t even listening. Setting my half empty cup down on a nearby table, I said with an apologetic smile “Sounds interesting, I have to use the restroom so if you’ll excuse me”
I started making my way through the crowd making shore no one was paying attention as I shot a look in Hayden’s direction.
‘Meet me in the hall’ I sent through the mind link then disappeared through the gym doors into the school halls. Shortly after that Hayden came strolling out of the gym.
“Hay” he greeted with his hands stuffed into the pockets of his dark wash jeans. I smiled.
“Hay” I said standing up on my tip toes to place a quick kiss to his lips when I was shore we were completely alone.
“You wanted to see me?” he asked in a daze from the short contact. I grinned grabbing onto his hand then started leading him towards the nearest exit “Yeah common” I ushered pulling him through a side door that lead to the parking lot.
“Where are we going?” he asked looking around at the deserted parking lot stocked full of cars while I headed for the tree line on the other side of the parking area.
“You’ll see” I muttered then let go of his hand to run off into the woods. Hayden stood speechless staring after me as I kicked my shoes off.
“What are you-? Hay, wait up!” he called after me but I just giggled swerving through trees and looking out for risen tree roots. I heard him following and started going faster.
“Rachel!” I heard him call but I didn’t stop instead I started laughing happily shooting a look back in his direction. He was gaining but not by much.
“Common you’re faster than that!” I teased with a bright smile lighting up my face causing him to smile when he looked at me then he started running faster, fast enough to be at arms-length.
I broke through the tree line into a small clearing and turned jogging backwards when Hayden suddenly scooped me up and was twirling me around. I laughed with sheer joy, my head thrown back and my hands clasped onto his shoulders while his were locked around my thighs holding me up. When he finally stopped spinning me we just stood there in the middle of the clearing with him holding me close. Gazing into his eyes I found them studying me as if I was some magnificent artwork on display.
“You’re beautiful” Hayden breathed in all honesty never once braking my gaze when he said it. I smiled reaching both hands up to cup his face tenderly in my palms.
“I love you” I whispered our lips just inches away from each other sending my warm breath across his face. Hayden closes the gap between us and slowly kissed me with so much passion that it caused my heart to ached for him. I smiled into the kiss before he pulled away pressing his forehead against mine.
“I love you more” he muttered tightening his arms around me. I couldn’t wish for a more perfect moment then that, the way he held me, kissed me with the almost full moon high up in the starry night sky and the forest around us. I felt at home in those few moments together and knew that I’d never know any other home than a home where I was securely wrapped in his arms.
