When I woke up the next morning Vicky and Bridget were already banging my bedroom door down.
“Rachel we know you’re in there so open up already!” Bridget yelled on the other side of the door. I groaned and tried blocking them out with a pillow.
“Rachel it’s eight thirty and Bridget hasn’t had her neutella yet!” it was Vicky that time and instantly I shot upright in bed. Bridget had been having odd cravings one of which was neutella and if she didn’t get what she wanted she’d go on a rampage.
“I swear to our Alpha if you don’t open this door right now Rachel I’ll-.” I nearly jumped out of bed making a bee line for the door.
“Coming, I’m coming!” I said and flung the door open to find Bridget standing there with a pregnant lady glare aimed towards the door. Vicky had taken a few steps back down the hall so I shot her a look.
“What? You want to deal with that?” Vicky asked when she noticed my furrowed brows and motioned towards Bridget who was still glaring at the door.
“Good point” I nodded and stepped to the side motioning them in. Bridget snapped out of it but still growled at me when she stormed into my room with Vicky following behind.
“So what’s with the early morning wakeup call?” I asked the two of them while closing my door and running a hand through my messy bed hair.
“It’s Saturday” Vicky stated matter-of-factly as Bridget started going through my makeup and accessories grumbling on about how I had nothing that worked with the dress “And?” I still wasn’t getting it.
Vicky shot me an annoyed look jabbing her thumb in Bridget’s direction “And miss hopeless romantic over there didn’t get any sleep last night since she was too busy planning your wedding”
We both looked at Bridget who was now digging through my closet for the perfect shoes for me to wear.
“Uh she does know there isn’t going to be a wedding, right?” I asked focusing back on Vicky who obviously was hipped up on caffeine.
“That’s what I kept telling her but every time I would she’d say-.” Vicky tried to explain but Bridget cut her off by chucking a pair of stilettos at her “Let me dream!” she yelled like some crazy caged animal then went back to shoe searching like nothing happened.
Vicky had luckily managed to dodge the shoes and looked like a tired mother “Yeah that”
I glanced at Bridget who was talking to a pair of shoes then back at Vicky “Okay so she’s clearly lost her mind”
Vicky gave me a ‘you think’ look and went over to plop down in one of my bean bags with a magazine in hand.
“I hear pregnancy does that to a person” with that she was engrossed in Johnny Depp while Bridget came out of my closet stuffing a pair of black and silver platform heels into my arms saying “These are perfect, Tristan will love you in them”
I wanted to remind her that I wasn’t trying to look good for Tristan or that the engagement thing wasn’t real but I stayed quite not wanting things being chucked at my head so I opted for “You know there’s still, what like I don’t know, ten hours left before the party, right?” instead.
Bridget wasn’t even paying attention as she looked around trying to find my dress “Where’s the dress?” was all Bridget could say sticking her head out of my closet to look at me with big almost obsessed and tired eyes. I sighed.
“Back right corner” I said when I realised that she wasn’t going to focus on anything else and in a flash Bridget was back inside my closet. Vicky flipped over a page then noticed the look I was giving her.
“Hay don’t look at me like that, it’s your turn to babysit” I was about to protest when Bridget came out of my closet with my dress in hand and started yanking it over my head while I struggled to get free.
“Yeah you might want to get the neutella” Vicky was saying as she skimped over some boob job article. I managed to get Bridget off me and threw the dress on my bed along with the heels.
“Yeah thanks for that” I said then started out the door before Bridget could suffocate me. Vicky shot me a thumbs up.
“Don’t forget the caffeine I’m only running on two hours here!” she called after me as I disappeared out the door. When I got to the kitchen Rose was munching on an apple and talking to Blake while Hayden leaned up against the kitchen counter. I had the most brilliant plan ever.
“Hay Rose Bridget’s looking for you, something about shoes” I said while making my way over to the cabinet in the corner. Rose looked at me then perked up.
“O-Oh yeah” she muttered getting up and dumping her half eaten apple in the trash. She was about to leave when I stopped her .
Wait before you go take this-.” I paused handing her the neutella “Trust me you’re going to need it” she looked at the jar confused but then nodded and disappeared out the door.
I was grinning like a mad woman for managing to get rid of Bridget for a few hours.
“What did you do this time?” Travis asked when he noticed my grin as he stepped into the room. Hayden and Blake exchanged weird looks clearly missing something.
“Why would you ask such a thing? I haven’t done anything…yet” I defended faking hurt and a dramatic gasp with my hand placed over my heart. Travis looked me up and down suspiciously as Kyle walked in stopping when he looked at my face.
“What did you do?” he asked looking mortified since last time he was on the list of pore unsuspecting victims.
“I’m innocent” I stated but he and Travis shared a look like they didn’t believe a word I was saying “Rachel” Travis droned out while Kyle crossed his arms over his chest and looked at me disapprovingly. I groaned.
“You guys know me too well” I grouched heading over to get myself a granola bar to snack on.
“Exactly now what did you do?” Kyle repeated. I’d known Travis, Kyle and Tristan ever since we were kids and because Travis, Kyle and I used to get into trouble all the time they knew what ‘the grin’ meant.
“I sent Rose up to deal with your b***h crazy girlfriend that’s what” I replied causing Kyle to chuckle and Travis to freeze in terror with eyes as big as dinner plates.
“Y-You sent Rose? That pore girl still has her life ahead of her Rachel!” Travis exclaimed but I just shrugged it off while Kyle tried to regain his composure.
“She’s not that bad” he said looking from me to Travis and back to me. I started choking on my granola bar and Travis was staring at him with his jaw dropped in disbelief.
“You’re crazy, right?” Travis asked while I coughed until I managed to get the food down and started wheezing.
“She tried to suffocate me! And apparently she’s planning my wedding” I said and looked at Kyle who looked at me with his confused puppy dog eyes. I nodded.
“Ow yeah Bridget wants a wedding” Kyle looked gobsmacked while Travis burst out laughing at the look on his face and I just stood with a smug smirk eating my breakfast bar that is until I heard the beast herself.
“Rachel!” it was Kyle’s turn to smirk while I stood staring at the kitchen door with wide and terrified eyes.
“Oh crap” I mumbled and both Travis and Kyle found it funny. I shot them glares and that’s when Bridget stepped in.
“There you are what’s taking you? I have to get you looking all pretty for Tristan tonight” she said clearly nicer than before which meant she had her neutella thanks to Rose. I noticed how Hayden tensed out of the corner of my eye and tried to correct Bridget.
“I’m not really getting engaged you know-.” the innocent and big eyed look she had on disappeared almost instantly.
“Let me dream!” she yelled and I shrunk back tossing my granola bar wrapper into the trash then raised my hands in surrender.
“Okay, okay let’s go make me pretty for Tristan” Bridget instantly brightened up when I said that and took a hold of my hand to drag me back upstairs while Kyle smirked and Travis was laughing his arse off.
‘Help me’ I mouthed to Hayden but he only chuckled and shook his head.
‘I love you’ he mouthed back and I shot him a playful glare as Bridget dragged me off back into her mother’s den.
------------------------------
By the time six o’clock rolled around I was dressed in the black flowy dress that I’d bought and black platform heels with silver detailing. My hair was in an elegant up do and I wore silver jewellery. My makeup was light with only a touch of lip gloss and eyeliner.
“Girl you look stun-ning” Vicky complimented looking me up and down as I examined myself in my full length mirror. Bridget seemed to be back to her old self leaning against my dresser with magazine in hand. It reminded me of my eighteenth birthday party.
“Those boys won’t know what hit them” Bridget said back to normal with the Hayden, Tristan thing. I rolled my eyes about to say something when my mom appeared in the doorway.
“You girls mind helping me out, down in the kitchen?” she asked dressed in a deep purple floor length dress that was flowy around the skirt but elegant at the top.
“Shore thing mom” I said then started out the door, heels clicking down the hall with Vicky and Bridget following after. When we got to the kitchen the whole place was stocked full of food platters and drinks.
“Alright then so I need you girls to take these out to the party for me” my mom explained handing a platter each to Vicky and Bridget then handing a trey with drinks over to me before she grabbed the last platter for herself.
“Got it Mrs H” Vicky said using the old nickname she’d used when we were little that stood for 'Mrs Hottie'. My mom smiled at her while Bridget stared down at her platter with hungry eyes.
“Alright well I’ll see you girls at the party then, especially you Rachel!” she called the last part when she was almost out the back door and onto the porch. I rolled my eyes but didn’t say anything as Vicky stared at Bridget with furrowed eyebrows.
“You hungry Bridget?” Vicky asked seeming casual. The bleach blonde nodded her head but her eyes kept staring at the food.
“It has pickles” she mumbled and Vicky sighed in realisation while I just looked on with confusion until Vicky turned to me.
“One of her cravings” she said as if it made all the sense in the world then turned back to Bridget who was licking her lips and still staring at the platter like it was her prey.
“Go ahead” Vicky muttered motioning towards the kitchen door and Bridget looked up at her with big happy eyes.
“Really?” she asked looking from Vicky to me as if asking permission. I breathed a laugh but nodded at her childish ways “Yeah go on”
I jerked my head towards the door and Bridget smiled brightly squealing before she turned to make a mad dash for the exit but stopped to glance at both Vicky and me.
“Thank you guys” she thanked then disappeared and about two seconds after she was gone we heard "Food!" being called from the top of the stairs.
Vicky and I shared a look laughing as we shook our head at our handful of a friend.
“We better get going before your mom calls for a rescue team or something” Vicky said jabbing her thumb towards the back door and I nodded following her outside saying “That’s my mom for you”
It was already dark and the back yard was deserted with everyone already at the bonfire.
“So, you ready for this?” Vicky asked after a moment of silence. She was staring straight ahead as we made our way through the forest.
“For what?” I asked playing dumb when I really didn’t want to answer her.
“You know. the whole engagement thing” she said while I looked around at anything but at her. The forest was so quiet and peaceful at night with only a few animals scurrying about.
“To be completely honest no I’m not” I muttered truthfully glancing down at the forest floor and leaves crunching beneath my feet.
“Really? You don’t look nervous or anything” she noted looking at me and for the first time since she mentioned the topic I looked up to meet her hazel gaze.
“I’m freaking out on the inside” I said causing her to stop in her tracks and me to follow when I noticed that she wasn’t walking anymore.
“Don’t, all you have to do is say yes” she assured giving me a faint smile which I returned with a sad one of my own. She was trying to lighten the mood but the anxiety was killing me.
“It’s not just that that’s bothering me” I whisper lowly bowing my head as I turned my back to her again. There was a pause then she stepped up beside me.
“Then what else is?” she asked placing a comforting hand on my shoulder as I sighed glancing up at the stars “I’m leaving Vicky and I-.”
She cut me off when she noticed my eyes starting to glisten with unshed tears.
“You’re scared” I stayed quite but nodded to let her know that she was right. I turned my eyes back onto her only to find her glancing up at the stars this time.
“Well don’t be you’re going to be with Hayden, aren’t you?” I nodded again still not able to find my voice as I tried my best to swallow back the tears “Then there’s nothing to be afraid of” she gave my shoulder a light squeeze and I shot her a grateful look that she returned with a smile. She started walking again.
“So what are we waiting for? Let’s go get drunk” I couldn’t help but laugh at her while she shacked her rear from side to side then started after with a small smile plastered across my face. Her words were reassuring to me and made me feel a whole lot better about everything. Once we got to the bonfire everyone was dancing to a steady drum beat while Vicky headed over to place her platter on the buffet table. I decided to walk around offering the drinks on my trey to people and chatting to try and calm my nerves. It was around nine thirty by the time my mother called me and I knew that it was happening. Tristan was standing near the bonfire waiting as I sat my empty trey down on a nearby table.
“You ready?” he asked when I was finally in front of him. I took a deep breath closing my eyes then let it out only to nod.
“As I’ll ever be” I answered when the drums stopped and people turned to stare at us, some with confusion and others with realisation. I gulped as Tristan dug the ring my mother chose for me out of his back pocket then got down on one knee. I didn’t hear a single word he said instead my eyes caught sight of someone leaning against a tree in the background.
‘Hayden’ I breathed through our closed off mind link. My eyes were focused on Tristan but my mind was somewhere else.
‘I love you so much Rachel’ his words struck me like a ton of bricks and before I knew it my eyes were starting to tear up.
‘I-I love you too’ I replied through the link even though I was staring deep into Tristan’s eyes. There was a moment of silence then Hayden’s voice broke through the link again.
‘Say yes’ he sounded so hurt and defeated but we both knew that I had to say it so that we could finally be together. I started nodding my head tears streaming down my cheeks t they weren't tears of oy like they seemed.
“Y-Yes” I whispered then realised that probably no one but Tristan had heard me.
“Yes” I say louder and suddenly everyone was cheering as Tristan smiled lovingly up at me and slipped the ring onto the ring finger of my extended hand. He then got up and pulled me into a quick kiss that felt so wrong to me. When Tristan finally pulled away he paused to whisper in my ear.
“Go, get out of here” I met his eyes for a split second then nodded.
‘Thank you’ I breathed through the mind link then parted with him for the last time heading towards my mother as I wiped at my tears.
“I’m going to go get cleaned up, I’ll be right back” I said and my mom smiled at me nodding while I tried to tame my smudged eye liner “Okay dear hurry back” with that she was gone and I started making my way towards the pack house with Vicky and Bridget following silently after.
When I got there I headed upstairs stripping down and pulled on a pair of skinny jeans, a white tank top and a pair of brown combat boots.
“You have to hurry before they start to notice that something’s wrong” Vicky said while Bridget was pouting over my discarded dress and neatly picked it up. I went over to grab a back pack from my closet and started hurriedly filling it with clothes.
“We’re going to miss you so much Rachel” Bridget suddenly announced past silent tears as she whipped at them. Vicky grabbed my toiletries and started stuffing them into my bag as I cleaned the makeup off my face and started undoing my hair.
“It just won’t be the same without you around” Vicky mumbled not meeting my gaze as I tied my hair up into a high ponytail then took off Tristan’s ring and left it on my dresser where Bridget had placed my neatly folded dress.
“Yeah, who’s going to be the godmother of my baby now?” Bridget asked and Vicky shot her a look reminding her that she was still there and Bridget seemed to blink in realisation.
“Oh yeah sorry” Vicky scoffed rolling her eyes as she tossed my baggy grey hoodie from across the room. I caught it and quickly tugged it on as she handed me my back pack “You promise me you’ll be careful okay?” the look in her eyes showed clearly how worried she was and I nodded to assure her that everything was going to be fine.
“And you better call every once in a while” Bridget piped in from her place by my bedroom door. She was hugging herself and pushed a stray strand of hair behind her ear. I smiled sadly “I’ll try” that was enough to convince them to let me go and together we made our way downstairs and to the basement door.
“You’re really going to do this, aren’t you?” Vicky asked when I grabbed the cell keys that hung beside the door then turned the knob.
“When it comes to Hayden I’d do anything” I replied in all honesty and Bridget nodded from her place beside Vicky rubbing at her arms as if they were cold “I’d do the same for Kyle” I was glad that I had someone who understood and gave her a grateful smile before I started down the basement steps.
They stayed behind while I allowed my feet to carry me down the cold, dark corridor following the trail of their scents. It was stronger than the last time due to the full moon and more overpowering the closer I got. Coming into view I noticed the two hunched over figures occupying the cell.
“Well would you look at that, we were starting to think you forgot about us” the one with the golden eyes said smirking up at me from between the bars to his cell. I fumbled with the keys and moved closer to the lock.
“I made a deal” I muttered focusing on the keys jingling in my hands. The Beta slowly stood up from his place sitting on the damp stone floor.
“I see loyalty is a strong point” he grinned while the Alpha sat unmoving and I finally got the right key into the lock. Turning it I watched it click open then I tugged it to the side like a sliding glass door “Go” I ushered jerking my head towards the stairs that led to the chambers.
The Beta stepped out while Alpha Caine only sat staring out the small cell window “What’s your name pup?” he asked his voice still as dominating as before but more raspy from not talking all that much for some time.
“Rachel Kay” I said without hesitation then watched as he slowly got up off the ground and stood at his towering size stepping towards me.
“You’re trust in wolves can easily become a weakness” he simply informed then stepped outside the cell allowing me to close it. I left the keys in the lock as I strolled past heading for the stairs with them following close behind.
“I’ve mapped out the territory. There’s an old rout to the East take that then follow the no mans to the North” I explained remembering the map in my father’s study. The Beta looked at me with a raised eyebrow.
“What about you and your mate?” he asked as his Alpha trailed behind with his fists balled at his sides and his head held high with authority. It amazed me how cold and powerful he was “We’ll meet you there” the Beta nodded and headed on up the basement stairs with his Alpha trailing after and me being the last to exit.
I shut the door behind me then made my way towards the back door and out onto the porch. Hayden was there along with Rose, Blake, Bridget and Vicky.
“You know there’s no going back now, right?” Vicky asked and I nodded taking a deep breath then turned to look at Rose who had tears in her silver eyes.
“We’re really going to miss you guys” she said dressed in her gorgeous red dress that Bridget, Vicky and I helped her pick out on our little shopping spree. The memory brought tears of my own to my eyes.
“And we’ll miss you” I assured pulling her into a tight hug as she started crying more hysterically while Blake lightly rubbed her back. I positioned my lips at her ear to whisper softly “Now you can be with Tristan” she tensed utterly shocked at my words but ever since I’ve met her I knew she had a thing for him from the way she acted.
“T-Thank you” she thanked smiling slightly at me when Vicky and Bridget both pulled me into bone crushing hugsof their own but Bridget was the one to hold me captive.
“It used to be just the three of us against the world but now you’re leaving” she sniffled and even Vicky looked like she was ready to shed a tear.
“I have to do this Bridget” I said when she pulled away to look at me with her big blood shot baby blue eyes. The fact that she was pregnant didn’t help the situation at all.
“I know” she breathed as I smiled lightly at her then turned to Vicky who was whipping away a stray tear before she motioned towards the side of the backyard.
“They went East” she informed her voice cracking from suppressed sobs. I faintly smiled at her then pulled her into another hug before letting go “I know, Hayden and I are heading North we’ll meet up with them there to continue towards the West”
She could only nod as I turned to look at Bridget then glanced back at Vicky with a straight face trying to hold back what little self-control I had left “Take care of yourselves okay?” both of them nodded as I faced Hayden who had a sad smile formed across his lips.
He held his hand out to me and I took it without hesitation. We made our way towards the tree line but before we continued on I shot a look back in the direction of our friends.
“Let’s go before they catch on to us” Hayden said lightly tugging on my hand and referring to my parents. I followed him and together we started running through the forest dodging the bonfire party and heading straight for the Northern border of my father’s land. It wasn’t long before we reached it and I had to stop to look back again. Hayden waited as I stared off into the direction of the pack house.
‘Bye guys’ I said through the mind link making shore that only those who knew about me and Hayden could hear me then without another thought I stepped over the border feeling the mind link shatter as I did.
“They’ll be okay Rachel” Hayden assured his hand tightening its grip on mine when he sensed my worry. I glanced back one last time.
“Yeah” was all I could say as I came to terms on what I was doing. I was running away with my mate to join an enemy pack.
Just then two giant wolves came bolting along the No Mans which was only a few miles wide. They stopped in front of us one a blackish brown the other a midnight black. The black one being Alpha Caine jerked his huge head towards his back then crouched down as if telling me to get on. The Beta did the same with Hayden and reluctantly I gripped the fur of the Alpha in my hands to hoist myself up onto his back. I shot a look at Hayden while the Alpha stood only to see him perched up on the Beta’s back. I glanced down.
“Thank you-.” I breathed in gratitude towards the Alpha as both him and the Beta took off running towards the West where their pack lands where located. He glanced back at me as I pressed myself closer against his back gripping tightly at his fur.
“Alpha” I finished and for the final time that night I glanced towards the border as we ran alongside it with Hayden and the Beta not far behind.
