It was late afternoon the next day by the time we got to their land more than six towns over. We had been running none stop for hours with only the occasional water stop and my legs felt like jelly. Alpha Caine stopped in the middle of a clearing where the pack house sat waiting. Pack members gasped and stared as I finally got off their Alpha’s back.
“Caine!” a feminine voice cried as the Alpha wolf shifted back into his human form and pulled on the shorts someone held out to him “Oh Caine I missed you, I was starting to get worried” a petite caramel blonde with warm amber eyes came barging out of the house towards the Alpha.
I watched as she nearly hugged him to death “Don’t you ever scare me like that again okay?”
I smiled at the sight of the two, knowing that the woman was most likely Rebecca, Caine’s mate.
“I brought you someone” Caine said his eyes turning onto me as I stood with my hoodie tied around my waist and my back pack slung over one shoulder. Rebecca pulled away from him and gasped “Oh my goodness is she the next in line Luna? She’s so beautiful”
I smiled warmly down at the woman as she started playing with strands of my hair “Thank you Luna” I breathed bowing my head to show respect but she grabbed my face in both her hands and shook her head at me.
“There’ll be none of that child, please call me Rebecca” I nodded and extended my hand for her to shake wanting to show respect towards Alpha Caine’s mate.
“Rachel” I introduced but Rebecca only stared at my hand then surprised me by pulling me into a bone crushing hug.
“I’ve always wanted a daughter!” she squealed happily and that’s when I figured out the reason why Caine had me make a deal to become a heir to his pack, his mate couldn’t have kids.
“Oh this is so exciting, we can go shopping and stay up all night gossiping about-.” she started rambling once she pulled away and I couldn’t help but watch with amused eyes until a sudden yawn came on and I stretched out my sore muscles.
“I’m so sorry dear, here I am rambling on about nonsense and you’re probably tuckered out from the trip, common I’ll show you to the lake house” Rebecca said grabbing hold of my arm and started dragging me off towards the back of the house and into the woods.
“Lake house?” I asked curious as Hayden, the Alpha and Beta trailed behind. The petite blonde nodded her head in excitement.
“Yes that’s where you and your mate will be staying. It’s located near the No Man’s so if your old pack does come looking your scent will be easy to mask” she explained and I nodded glancing back towards Hayden who was dressed in faded blue jeans and a baggy red hoodie .
“Now I just want you to know that your training will start tomorrow at a clearing near here so-.” Hayden stepped forward and interrupted her "Training?" with a terrified look on his face from his lack of experience in training.
“Yes now don’t interrupt me boy it’s bad manners” Rebecca scolded like she was talking to a child and Hayden instantly shut his mouth pouting like a kicked puppy “Sorry” he muttered and I couldn’t help but laugh at how cute he looked .
“As I was saying, your training will start tomorrow at nine thirty, don’t be late and make shore you’re well fed, don’t want to be fighting on an empty stomach now” I could easily see the mother roll Rebecca played in the pack as a respected and good willed Luna.
“Yes ma’am” I said nodding causing Rebecca to shoot me a kind hearted smile that only a mother could. It amazed me how even though she couldn’t have kids she fit into the roll perfectly “Alright now your trainers are waiting for you down by the lake”
Hayden seemed to gulp while I could only grin in excitement at the thought of having another pack training me, new tactics, new skills.
“I think it’s a good idea to get to know them a little first, don’t you?” Rebecca asked directing her question at me while still clinging to my arm. She was so small that her head barely reached my chin while Caine was a towering giant and nearly a full head taller than me.
“I would think so, it gives us time to assess what we’re dealing with” I replied honestly giving a little shrug as we continued walking down a heavily wooded path “Oh my you’re going to be quite the future Luna dear I can already sense it”
The Beta chuckled from my other side while the Alpha stayed quite listening instead of speaking.
“Another one of your senses Rebecca?” he teased and she shot him a narrow eyed look causing him to chuckle lowly.
“Brice I suggest you zip it before I tear you apart and feed you to the Rogues, darling” both mine and Hayden’s eyes widened at her threatening tone but Brice only shook his head in amusement and held his hands up in surrender.
“Aw Rebecca common you know I’m only teasing” I watched the two with awe thinking of how my own parents were so stuck up and formal when these two were like teenagers.
“You can be glad you’re my best friend and my mate’s Beta or else it would’ve been your head by now” the way Rebecca’s sweet and fragile voice said it made it sound like a casual conversation of the weather which had me smiling more.
“Love you too Becks” Brice teased and the woman shot him another look before flipping him off. I couldn’t take it anymore and burst out laughing.
“What’s so funny?” Brice asked with a giant grin spread out across his face. I wiped away stray tears when I managed to compose myself.
“A-A little lady just flipped you off” I said in between breaths of laughter and this time Rebecca surprised me by turning to look at Brice in all seriousness.
“Yeah well he should go f**k himself” that was all I needed before I was laughing hysterically again but this time Hayden was laughing with me. Brice had on a mock disapproving look.
“Why Becks is that any way to talk in front of guests?” he asked gasping but Rebecca only shot him a deadly look.
“Screw you” with that she left him standing there gapping while a pleased smirk made its way across her face. I was starting to like her already.
“Now back on topic” Rebecca began glancing between Hayden and I before she continued “You’re initiation into the pack will be tomorrow night since I know you two are exhausted and would like to settle in before all that. Oh yes and Rachel you’ll be working with the pack Doctor during regular training sessions so yours will start after, so-.”
In order to be a Luna a female must be strong and capable to defend herself but also experienced in case injuries occur as well as able to show strong leadership.
"Good luck" Rebecca added with a sincere, motherly smile that caused her heart shape face to light up almost lovingly.
“The runt’s going to need it” Alpha Caine suddenly said speaking up for the first time since we started for the lake house. I froze and turned to look at him causing both Rebecca and Brice to freeze as well. Hayden just kept his head down.
“He just needs a push in the right direction, that’s all” I said defending my mate which had Brice gawking and Rebecca smirking at my bravery. The corner of Caine’s lip tilted up slightly but as soon as it was there, it was gone .
“We’ll see” was all he said then pushed on ahead without another word. Rebecca started tugging me along again, pausing to whisper to me loud enough so only Brice, Hayden and I could hear.
“You stick it to the man dear” I laughed along with the rest of them and shook my head. The rest of the walk was silent and by the time we broke through the tree line, we were met with a lovely view of a lake and a two story house with a nice homey feel to it.
“You’re trainers are waiting down by the docks but in the meantime Caine and I have some pack business to attend to” Brice said glancing at the stone cold giant of an Alpha before they both turned to leave with the Alpha pausing to place a tender kiss to his mate’s cheek and then he was gone.
“Well common you two let’s get you settled in” Rebecca insisted grabbing Hayden’s arm without warning and causing him to flinch as she dragged us off down a manmade stone path that led from the forest to the house and docks. We followed the path that led to the docks with the sun just setting over the horizon and towards a group of three guys dressed only in shorts.
“Luna!” one of them called when they noticed Rebecca and started jogging up to us. The closer he got the more familiar he looked.
“Brett?” I asked shocked to see his messy black hair and puppy brown eyes again. He stopped when he saw me and a smile spread across his lips.
“Hay Lu-I mean Rachel” I smiled slightly at the memory of telling him to call me Rachel instead of Luna and asked with hopeful eyes.
“Please tell me you’re going to be the one training me” I almost pleaded and Brett grinned nodding as he jabbed his thumb back in the direction of the two other approaching male figures.
“Me and my brother” at the mention of his brother I perked up and stood up on my tip toes to glance over his shoulder. Shore enough a head of brown hair came into view.
“Beau!” I called and the eldest brother’s head snapped up in my direction with a small smirk. He started jogging up to us and for some reason I felt more at home with the two of them close by.
“Luna” Beau said bowing his head in respect and I punched him in the arm causing him to cringe slightly.
“How many times do I have to tell you guys to call me Rachel?” I asked causing both of them to chuckle as the third guy, one I’ve never seen before stepped up beside them. He had midnight black hair and piercing rusty red brown eyes.
“Wow there training hasn’t even started yet and you’re already throwing punches” Beau teased rubbing at his arm for emphasis even though I didn’t hit him hard enough to hurt him. I playfully rolled my eyes at him saying “I’m devoted” I shrugged and Brett chuckled lowly but bowed his head in respect when Rebecca stepped forward, they all did apart from me and Hayden.
“So you’ve met our two Warrior brothers before?” she asked me, turning to glance at me out of curiosity with Hayden following. He didn’t know about that time at the mall, I never told him.
“I ran into them once” Rebecca shot me a heart-warming smile then glance at the unknown male. She sent a look in Hayden’s direction motioning towards the guy with a much bigger build than both Brett and Beau alike.
“Hayden meet Tate your trainer and the best fighter our pack has to offer” Hayden froze at her words and gulped but I knew why they’d pick their strongest fighter to train him. He was weak and in order to become future Alpha he had to be made into a proper Alpha .
“Runt” Tate greeted, giving a jerk of his head in Hayden’s direction then he turned to me bowing his head respectfully.
“Luna” I saw the defeat in Hayden’s eyes and felt his low self-esteem through our bond, it angered my wolf so turning to Tate I gave him a stern expression.
“Don’t call him that” he seemed taken aback by my calm yet threatening tone, they all did except for Rebecca who was smirking at the sight. I looked at her saying “If you’ll excuse me Rebecca, I’ve got some unpacking to do” and started pushing past Tate when she nodded to me with a motherly gaze and tender smile.
“Shore thing dear” Rebecca said but I stopped looking up at Tate who glanced down at me with a cold as stone stare.
“And don’t call me ‘Luna’ either, it’s Rachel” he could only nod at my words and once he did I was off, following the stone path down towards the lake house. I heard Hayden say his goodbyes then he came jogging up to my side.
“You really didn’t have to do that you know” he said easily catching up with his long strides. I took a deep breath trying to calm myself but it didn’t work and Hayden seemed to notice so he gently took a hold of my hand giving it a light squeeze.
“You’re not a runt” I muttered starting to relax with my hand in his much bigger one. He leaned down and pressed a quick kiss to my cheek then whispered in my ear.
“But I’m your runt” I couldn’t help but smile at his words. He was my mate and I was his, we belonged together as along as we’d live, forever and always.
