Rachel.
The next morning, I dressed in a simple floral print dress with a brown quarter sleeve, leather jacket and brown booties. I left my hair down in wavy curls and put on some light makeup.
Grabbing my bag beside my desk, I headed down stairs to where Vicky, Bridget and Tristan were already waiting, eating breakfast. My mom was washing the dishes and turned to smile sadly at me when I walked in.
"Morning" she greeted but I ignored her, heading over to grab a plate so that I could scoop some scrambled eggs, a few pieces of bacon and a slice of toast onto it.
"Morning hot stuff" Vicky joked, shooting a wink in my direction and causing me to giggle as I worked on buttering my toast.
"Oh my gosh those shoes are seriously to die for" Bridget complimented while Tristan stood up to hand his now empty plate to my mom then wrapped his arms around me from behind, planting a kiss to my cheek.
"You look gorgeous babe" he said, loud enough so my mom would hear. I wanted to push him off of me but I knew that it was all for show so I smiled a fake smile and replied "You don't look too bad yourself handsome"
He chuckled, heading over to take his seat at the kitchen table when Kyle walked in with his hair wet and wearing a simple white T-shirt with jeans which was different from Tristan's V-neck, dark jeans and black leather jacket.
Kyle went over to kiss Bridget's cheek "Morning beautiful" Bridget giggled like the love struck teenage girl she was and I looked on a bit jealous at the fact that it couldn't be like that between me and Hayden. Sighing I took a seat next to Tristan and dug into my plate while Kyle served himself.
"So what are the arrangements for the graduation party on Saturday?" Bridget asked, glancing from me to Vicky then back to me. I shrugged, in truth I had completely forgotten about the party.
"I thought we could have a bone fire party, you know like they do in collage?" Vicky offered but my mom butted in, placing a clean plate in the cabinet behind the strawberry blonde haired girl.
"It will also be Rachel and Tristan's engagement party, my husband and I were thinking of having the wedding a week or so after" I tried to bite my tongue when I went to spat at her but fought the urge when Tristan grabbed hold of my hand and gave it a reassuring squeeze which seemed like a loving gesture to my mom.
"That could work, Tristan could ask Rachel to marry him at the bonfire party in front of everyone" Bridget piped while I was freaking out inside, I really didn't want it to be in front of everyone, heck I didn't even want it in the first place.
Finishing my plate, I went and popped it in the sink before filling a glass with water and chugging it.
"Perfect, so it's settled then, now you all better get off to school or you're going to be late" my mom said, ushering us out the kitchen with Kyle trailing behind, his hand clutching Bridget's while the other twirled his car keys. Vicky caught a ride with Kyle and Bridget while I road with Tristan, trying to keep the 'couple' image going.
"If you're going to leave with him, you have to do it the night of the party" Tristan said halfway through the ride, breaking the silence. I looked at him, leaning my head against the cool window while I ran my fingers through my hair.
"Why the night of the party?" I asked, a little confused with a raised brow. Tristan glanced into his rear-view mirror at Kyle's car following us then shot a look in my direction before his eyes were back on the road again.
"Because then everyone will be too distracted to notice that you're gone. It'll give you till morning to put as much ground between you and the territory as possible before your dad starts looking for you" I nodded, understanding what he meant then sighed deeply at the thought of running away. Closing my eyes, I couldn't help the image of his perfect forest green eyes that flashed behind their closed lids.
"And it has to be after the engagement so that the spotlight won't be on you anymore" opening my eyes, I met with the sight of the school building, fast approaching.
Again I nodded, unable to find my voice but I knew Tristan saw me. He pulled into an empty parking space near the doors and cut the engine to get out. I reached for my bag in the backseat and when Tristan opened my door for me, I stepped out, glancing at my surroundings. I desperately wanted to see Hayden but I knew I couldn't.
"You ready?" Tristan asked, holding his hand out for me to take. I knew what he meant, we had to spread the word that we were a couple and what better way than to show them. Sighing, I took his hand and allowed him to lead me inside. I smiled a fake smile as we walked down the hall towards my locker were Tristan eventually dropped his hold on my hand to lean up against the locker next to mine.
I got my books out and stuffed them into my bag when the bell rang. Tristan pecked my lips then took off towards his first period of the day. I started towards my English class but got grabbed and shoved into the janitor's closet with a hand covering my mouth. I wanted to scream but I couldn't so I opted for struggling instead. When I got free, I turned to snarl at the person but froze when I locked my eyes with his forest green ones.
"Hayden?" I asked in relief, glad that it was him and not some psychopath wanting to kill me.
"What the Hell was that back there?" he demanded, fury and anger written all over his face as he looked at me, nostrils flaring and eyes holding an animalistic gleam.
"What was what?" it was the wrong question to ask since he practically rammed his fist into the wall next to him, causing his knuckles to bleed but he didn't seem to care.
"You kissed him! Why would you kiss him?" his forest green eyes were turning black and I knew he was fighting against his wolf not to go ahead and rip Tristan to shreds but I knew if he did, Tristan would be the one coming out on top.
"He kissed me and it's not like I wanted to!" I yelled, trying to hold back my tears but just the thought of Hayden thinking I was rejecting him broke my heart into a thousand pieces.
"What do you mean 'it's not like you wanted to'?" Hayden asked, his breathing becoming calmer after I yelled at him. I guess he could see the pain in my eyes .
"My father chose Tristan to be my mate" I said, lowering my head as I stared at the ground by my feet. I didn't want to look at him because I knew there would be hurt them not just because of me but because of my family as well.
"Why? You have me so why would he-." I cut him off, snapping my head up to look him right in the eye when I said in all seriousness "Because my father doesn't know that I've found my mate, he can never know"
Hayden furrowed his eyebrows up in confusion, looking off to the side of the room as he tried to process my words.
"Why not?" the question left his lips in the sound of a plea and it tore through me like a knife ripping through flesh. I hated seeing him in the state that he was as if he was useless and couldn't understand anything.
"Because you're an Omega" the words stung him like a blaze and they tasted horrible rolling off my tongue but it was the truth, a reminder of what was happening like a slap in the face. When he only gave me a blank stare I continued.
"Omega's can't be mated to Alpha's, it's against the Council law. Only a Beta, Gamma or Enforcer can be mated to an Alpha in order to keep our blood line at full strength" looking at him, I could see the pain and realization rolling off him in waves. With a sigh, I ran a shaky hand through my hair, glancing at anything other than him.
"That's why they can't know? Because if they did and found out about us they'd-." I cut him off with a look as solid and set in stone as marble that can only be cut by pure diamond.
"They'd kill you" I finished for him. Never in my entire being did I ever want to see him hurt, just the thought of it brought a new round of tears to my eyes so I did the only thing I could, I lit that small glimmer of hope I'd been clinging to as if my life depended on it.
"But after graduation we can run away, we can be together just the two of us and they'll never find us" that was my hope, that in the end after making the hard decision to leave my family and friends behind that we could still be together. Hayden looked at me with a hard gaze that softened the minute he saw my unshed tears.
"You've been planning it, haven't you?" he asked and with a choked sob, I nodded my head, begging him, pleading with him "Yes from the moment my father said I'd be marrying Tristan, I can't stand the thought of being without you Hayden. You have to come with me please, please just come with me"
I was desperate, willing to do anything to be with him. He was the werewolf that got my heartbeat racing, that made my knees go weak and allowed butterflies to swarm in my stomach, he was my mate, my other half.
"Please Hayden, please" I breathed the plea, gazing into his forest green eyes, hoping that he'd say yes and come with me. His face held so much love and kindness as he looked at me and I knew even just by looking into his eyes that he'd do anything for me just like I would for him.
"Okay" was his reply and I sobbed unable to hold back the joy as I threw my arms around him in a tight embrace. He held me close, burying his nose into my hair and inhaling my scent. I closed my eyes, causing the tears to fall as I hid my face in the crease of his neck. We stayed like that until the bell for second period rang and we both had to leave for our classes. I gave him a peck on the lips before I left, savoring his tingling touch without knowing when I would be able to feel it again.
------------------------------
"Oh my gosh did you see what she was wearing? Talk about a fashion disaster" Bridget said as we walked into the Cafeteria with Vicky right beside us "I mean who wears plaid with polka dots, who?" it was just like Bridget to be freaking out over what someone else was wearing.
Vicky only rolled her eyes since she wasn't too big on fashion, she was more the tomboy of our small circle while Bridget was the over the top girly girl.
"It's just wrong on so many levels, you get what I mean?" I ignored Bridget when my eyes locked onto a lonely figure across the room, leaning against the opposite wall with his head down and hands in his hoodie pockets.
"Um hello, Earth to Rachel, are you even listening to me?" Bridget asked, snapping me out of my trance and turning my attention to her. Vicky gave me a knowing look which meant she saw what I was looking at, Hayden, then turned to Bridget.
"Honestly who cares if someone wore plaid with polka dots, who?" she asked, copying Bridget's earlier comment and before Bridget could explode, Kyle came up behind her, embracing her while planting a kiss to the side of her head.
"What's got my princess fuming?" he asked, just by looking at her pout anyone could see she was ready to detonate but with Kyle being there he could disarm it. He was the only one that could cool her off which was cute.
"Nothing" Bridget said, grabbing his hand then pranced over to our usual table which was crowded with Jocks and Cheerleaders.
"You're so mean" I commented to Vicky, glancing back in Hayden's direction and this time locking gazes with him. Vicky bumped shoulders with me on her way to the table but stopped to whisper in my ear.
"And you're so in love" I paled, turning to glance after her while she chuckled to herself. I scoffed and rolled my eyes but with a smile I made my way over to our table. Tristan was already there and so I decided to sit down on his lap like all girlfriends did with their boyfriends.
"Hay babe" Tristan greeted, planting a kiss to the side of my head.
"Hay" I replied then went to go snatch a few of his fries. Tristan never shared his fries with anyone so I decided to take advantage. His arms tightened around my waist and his hands snaked up my sides.
"What are you doing?" I asked him in a low whisper so no one apart from us would hear.
"You smell like him, I'm trying to mask his scent so no one would notice" he answered, burying his face in my shoulder then shot a glance in Hayden's direction. I flicked my eyes towards where he stood, watching us like a predator on the hunt.
Two girls walked past him and one muttered "Freak" then they both burst out laughing and walked off, leaving Hayden behind with only a stone cold expression.
"Oh would you look at that, the Alpha's daughter has found herself a Prince Charming and a handsome one at that" Stacy, the head cheerleader commented with her usual smirk as she propped her elbows up onto the table, chin leaning into the palm of her hand.
"I think they make a really cute couple, it's about time the two best friends got romantic" Clair said from beside Stacy, batting her eyelashes in an almost dream-like state. I looked to Bridget for help but she was giggling with Kyle and Vicky was, well it was Vicky, she really wasn't good in those types of situations.
"Yeah well when he dragged me off at the party and kissed me I just couldn't help but realize that I love him" I said as if it was the most perfect thing ever but really on the inside it was killing me, it was a clear as day lie but only four people apart from me knew it.
"He kissed you? How romantic" Clair squealed, sitting on the edge of her seat as she bounced up and down, she wasn't the brightest. Stacy smiled beside her and leaned across the table.
"What was the kiss like?" she asked and suddenly the whole table was staring at me, waiting for an answer. Tristan could only sit back and watch as I took the whee,l the only problem was I had no idea how to steer it so I thought of how it felt to kiss Hayden.
"Fast and hungry but at the same time it was slow and sweet, it felt like I was flying, like nothing could even begin to compare to it-." I paused, glancing in Hayden's direction. He met my eyes with the most love and care in the world.
"It felt amazing, like nothing else mattered apart from us and that kiss" when I finished, Clair was clapping her hands together and fanning herself while Stacy only smiled and Tristan looked between me and Hayden with a knowing gaze.
"Girl, I've never seen you so in love" Stacy commented while Vicky and Bridget shared a look. It was true, I was hopelessly in love but it wasn't with Tristan, it was with an Omega.
"This calls for a celebration, tomorrow night we can all go out clubbing, how does that sound?" Stacy suggested, looking around at the table. Most of the guys and girls were agreeing to it and thought that it was a brilliant idea., even Bridget was saying it would do us all good but Tristan, Vicky and I weren't so sure.
"So what do you say Rachel, you up for it?" Stacy asked when I didn't say anything and with a quick glance in Hayden's direction, I plastered a fake smile across my lips.
"That would be great-." Stacy cut me off before I could finish and piped up over the entire table "It's settled, tomorrow night we party till the sun comes up, it's the last week of school so who cares if we get drunk and don't show up, right?"
Everyone cheered and most were already discussing the night out while I slumped back into Tristan's chest and groaned .
"This isn't going to end well, is it?" I asked him in a low whisper. Tristan looked at me then glanced at Stacy "Nope" I sighed, closing my eyes as I leaned into his neck "Thought so".
------------------------------
Once we got to the pack house, I decided to go for a run just to get away from it all. I pulled on some baggy sweats and a black sports bra along with my trainers then took off out the door with a bottle of water in hand. I followed the trail I always did that ran along the length of the pack lands and was about three miles out when my brother's voice snapped through the mind link.
'You're late, I suggest you get your ass to training before I start hunting you down myself' I stopped running to lean my hands on my knees, taking deep, slow breaths to control my heart beat and focus on my thoughts.
'Just when I started to think you cared' I mocked, turning around to start my track to the training grounds. My brother never showed any sign of emotion other than with Nicole but deep down I knew he cared, it was easy to see that in the way he freaked out when dad chose Tristan to be my mate.
'Funny' his voice grumbled in the back of my mind while I pushed myself to go faster. I was three miles out but could easily cover it in less than ten minutes.
'How is it that I got all the humor and you got stuck with being Mr Grouchy all the time?' I asked, nearing the clearing I'd been training in ever since I could walk. There was a chuckle on the other end of the line but I knew it wasn't Dalton's instead it was Clayton's, meaning he was listening in on our conversation.
'That's what I ask Nicole everyday' Clayton was Nicole's older brother and next in line Lead Enforcer for my brother. His mate was Addison and she was all emotion all the time unlike a certain Alpha to be. I heard my brother snarl.
'You know he's going to kill you, right?' and that was Travis, my partner and a Warrior in training. He was my age and muscular but not as made of muscle as my brother and Clayton, he knew how to stay out of trouble when it came to fights he knew he couldn't handle.
'What Mr Grouchy over there? I can take him' Clayton said, the smirk in his voice clear as day but I knew he was kidding since only an Alpha stood a chance against an Alpha.
'Sure you can and wolves can fly' Travis mumbled sarcastically, most likely rolling his eyes at the cocky older wolf. Dalton tried to ignore them, instead choosing to take his frustration out on me.
'Where the Hell are you Rachel, it's been nearly three minutes, move it' three minutes to cover three miles, he clearly liked to push me over the edge. I picked up speed and in no time the clearing approached up ahead. Using a stump, I propelled myself into the air, flipped then landed in a kneeling position.
"You called?" I asked, smirking as I stood up straight. My brother, Clayton and Travis stood in the middle of the clearing, Dalton looking annoyed and Clayton looking amused while Travis looked between him and my brother with fear in his hazel eyes.
"Why can't you be more like that?" Clayton asked my brother, motioning towards me. My all brawn brother glared at him with eyes that could make a full grown man cry.
"You better shut up before he goes all Mr Grouchy Alpha on your ass" I warned, making my way over to them and threw my water bottle to the side. Travis smothered a chuckle, coughing to stifle it when Dalton shot him a glare then started wrapping his fists. I did the same, bumping shoulders with him.
"You ready to get your ass kicked by a girl again?" I asked, grinning at the memory of last week's training session. Travis gave me a look then shook his head from side to side, muttering things under his breath. His pride still hurt.
"I'm never going to hear the end of that, am I?" he asked, still wrapping his hands as he shot a side glance at me. I grinned, banging my now wrapped knuckles together then started walking backwards.
"Nope" I answered wickedly, taking my stand opposite him in the center of the clearing. My brother and Clayton where stood off to the side, observing. When Travis finally finished with his hands, he took a stand in front of me.
"Alright, this will be a head on fight, no rules attached, the first one to make the other bleed wins! Now fight!" my brother snarled and before the words were even out of his mouth, I was already sprinting towards Travis.
The sandy brown haired boy stared wide eyed as I approached, using his arms to block his face and torso. I slid down, in between his parted legs and rolled to stand, ramming my shoulder into his back. He gasped, causing blood to shoot out from his mouth and splatter across the clearing floor.
"I win" I breathed into his ear but was forced back when he spun around to throw a punch at me. I dodged it and caught the next one in my fist, only to have my legs kicked out from under me. Falling to the ground, I could feel Travis looming overhead, aiming another punch for my gut but I rolled out of the way and stood fast enough to land a kick to his chest. He stumbled back, staring down at his chest then glanced up to me. He charged forward, trying to land a few more punches but I managed to dodge them and caught his right wrist, landing my own punch to his jaw. His head flew to the side, spitting up more blood.
"I win, round three" with that said, I brought my knee up and connected it with his stomach, forcing him back a few steps. He was bent over, clutching at his gut and taking that to my advantage, I spun round, landing a perfect round house kick to his face and knocking him clean off his feet. He was on his back, breathing hard while I stood smirking .
"Ding, ding, ding we have a winner" I mock announced, throwing my arms up and pounding my fist into the air a few times, even bowing to Clayton and my brother.
"Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all week" Clayton chuckled at my actions and I swore I saw Dalton c***k a smirk but as soon as it appeared it was gone.
Travis groaned and rolled onto his stomach with his face in the dirt "b***h" I heard him choke and this time I was the one to chuckle.
"Not denying that" I said, heading over to kick at his side, flipping him back over onto his back. Dalton looked ready to speak when a Guard entered the clearing. He turned to my brother and Clayton.
"The Alpha wishes to see you" Dalton shared a look with his Lead Enforcer then nodded. My brother glanced at me and paused before following after the Guard.
"Your posture was off" was all he said then stalked off. Clayton followed, walking backwards as he called "Don't kill him!"
I knew he was talking about Travis and chuckled, shaking my head at the twenty two year old. Once they were out of sight, Travis groaned and sat up on the ground.
"Did you have to land that last blow?" he asked, rubbing at his jaw. I shrugged and started over towards my water bottle while he worked on getting up off the ground.
"Not my fault you didn't see it coming" I muttered, snatching my bottle and unscrewing the cap to down the remainder of it. Once done, I screwed the cap back on and tossed it up and down in my hands while Travis cursed under his breath.
"Well I guess that's it for today huh?" I asked, noting that we didn't have any trainers left. Travis nodded, slumping down against the tree beside me, grabbing his own bottle of water. Blood was streaming down from his nose and jaw with him trying to wash it off.
"Guess so but all I did was get my ass whooped" I giggled at that and decided to take a seat beside him with my back pressed up against the tree trunk. Leaning my head back, I closed my eyes and started listening to the world around me.
"Don't you always?" I teased with a smile grazing my lips.
Birds were out singing, a light breeze blew across the land, rustling the autumn leaves and there was a stream nearby that flowed to the South.
"Only when I'm up against you" Travis said truthfully also leaning back to relax against the tree. I slowly opened my eyes to peer up at the sky above through the cracks of the tree branches and realized something. I'd miss Travis, I'd miss our training together and his name calling whenever he'd lose, I'd miss all of it when I'd leave but I knew I had to if I wanted to be with Hayden.
