A lesson for the Alpha
Mae's POV
"I'm sorry Mae I'm going with Rosie"
"Sorry I'm going with brooke"
"I wish you'd ask me sooner I already got a date"
Well guess I'm going stag to Sadee Hawkins, this is why I hate dances. If you dont have a date your a loser, but if you just get a date to have one people thing you two are together. I don't even want to go to the stupid thing but mom insists. She says it's the girls chance to be bold and speak up for what they want, take the power from the man, but we both know shes just hoping her own personal fairy tale will work its magic on me. Dad and her had their first date at their Sadee Hawkins dance and two years later they discovered they were mates.
Me have a mate, as if, I dont need some love sick drama holding me back from the life I want to live. I want to focus on my studies and be a difference to this pack. So many she-wolves find their mates and settle into the basic life of motherhood and care taker. Not me I want to help change pack moral and make us the greatest pack of all time. Not just for our stength and wealth but for our diplomacy as well.
I already got my foot in the door too, my best friend Tyler is our future Alpha. He will be taking over our pack after he graduates. I can't believe I have to survive two more years of this place without him. Hes a senior and I'm a sophmore. We've been inseparable since we were kids I don't know how I'm going to manage without him. Though if I'm being honest with myself I do, with his coming title comes more responsibilities and we seem to have less and less time to spend together.
I get it, hes already captain of the football team and leader of the debate club but now with his alpha responsibilites most of our time together is spend with him looking over books in his office and me complaining about our tryant teachers and bad cafeteria food. I just miss my best friend. We used to go to the movies every friday and watch whatever terribly rated film was released that week. It was our thing. That hasn't happened in two years.
After school I catch the bus to the pack house. I got my license a few months ago when I turned sixteen but Im still working at the local coffee shop trying to raise enough money for my own vehicle.
"Tyler, help me come up with a believable excuse to give my mom so I don't have to go to this stupid dance. I've asked everyone I can think of and I'm so not showing up there stag," I say as I plop myself down on his office sofa tossing my bookbag against the wall.
His office is pretty basic. A long low hanging window with an inner ledge lines one side of the room. A dark wood desk in the center with two simple chairs opposite of him. Bookshelves lining the wall behind him and a couch on the wall infront of him. He needs a little fiminine touch in here, I've offered but he says no everytime, he wants to leave it open for his Luna to add her touch on things.
Not that he wants a Luna, hes always been a ladies man but never been one to date. He knows the value in a mate but doesnt Want to juggle being an alpha and a mate too. He sees his parent struggle, he was so relieved when he turned 18 and Nothing changed. Not to say his Luna hasn't come of age yet but hes greatful he gets to take on his role alone and can focus on building our pack beyond just its population.
"Hello, earth to Tyler, you got any genius Ideas in that brain of yours?" --
I grab a pillow off the couch and chuck it straight at his head, he catches it without even looking up and continues working on papers infront of him.
*sign* "I really need your help man, I know your busy being the big bad alpha but don't let your little pee-ons feel unappreciated now. Without us you are nothing."
"TYLER!! IM TALKING TO YOU!"
---
Im not normally one for the dramatics but in that moment I couldnt help myself. I got up off the couch and with a quick swipe of my hand I knocked everything on his desk onto the floor.
"What the hell Mae! I've been working on those reports for hours! there's thirty pages there that you just dumped everywhere and are now all out of order!"
"O quit your whining, I'll help you clean it up, but can I please have your undivided attention for two seconds. I really need my best friends advice right now. And as of late your no where to be found or if you are your face is shoved into books or mountains of paperwork and I'm pretty sure you don't even hear a word I am saying."
"Mae, I'm becoming alpha in four weeks, I don't have time to discuss Mr. Butlers bad breath or the rotten school food anymore. I'm sorry but High School is practically over for me and I need to be focusing on learning all that I can about this pack so that I'm not a total failure when I take over." he sighs as he slumps back into his chair at the desk and rubs his forhead intensely.
I can tell hes tired and my antics probably were a little juvenille but that doesn't change the fact that I'm also right.
"Two things Tyler, One-there's no way you wont be a bad ass alpha you been killing yourself all year juggling school, sports, clubs and this junk your gonna be a rockstar. Two- part of being an alpha is listening to your pack and making sure they feel heard. I know this dance is dumb and stupid but its my life right now and as an alpha your pack is gonna want to know that he values their quality of life... Im sorry I interupted your work"
I bend down and pick up the papers I threw everywhere- "I'll talk to you later Tyler."
