When I make it down to the wolf game training field I am exhausted. four hours of breaking the recruits in followed by 4 more hours working out and training with the elite patrol and my body is spent. I'll feel better in an hour or so but for my muscles are throbbing.
I am plesently surprised to see everything is set up and staged out around the white claw high schools track and surrounding forest. The events consist of 10 events 6 for non shifting abilities, 3 for shifting skills, and of course the main event, The crowning of the supreme beastlord which is really just wolf version of a moshpit style survival of the fittest brawl. Alphas can not participate in theses fights and have separate ranking classes for the others to give everyone a fair chance. The 6 non shifting skills test competitors in knife throwning, shooting, hacking, investigating (basically an excape room type challange to test situational readiness if one were to be captured), and competitive pack sports (football and basketball).
The shifting required events are running, tracking, and a wolf-form forest based obstacle course. Each top 3 ranked indivisual or team earns bragging rights and a $10000 cash prize split between the placements for them or their pact. $6000 for first $3000 for second and $1000 for third. The one winner of the surpeme beast lord wins $20000 and the title of Warrior of the decade. alphas are awarded the same for their packs in the events with a bonus 10000 to the pack with the most placing members.
Most wolves will sign up to compete in all events while the team events require a try out process and has a riggerous practice schedule. The event lastest 7 days. The first is the opening ceromony sign ups and event mixer. The next four days each host two events knives and guns, tracking and hacking, obstacle course and excape room, basketball and football. The next day is the supreme beastlord event follow up with a mascarade ball. And the last day is the closing award ceromony. I am hopeful that the white claw pack will be fortunate enough to bring home several rewards this year.
As I watch my pack gather and register for events I can't help but feel hollow. I look off towards the edge of the woods and my mine flashes back to that day where Mae ran off into them. The truth is I never stood up for her that day. When Jess teased her for dancing with the alpha they got into a heated arguement and many of jess's friends joined in and bullied Mae she looked at me for help but I froze and said nothing. She ran off into the woods and that was the last I ever saw her. Her mom dissappeared the same day. Some believe Mae returned home and begged her mom to leave town for them both to have a fresh start. Other believe She went looking for Mae and is out there somewhere still looking. The only thing we do know is that the house was left behind with all their belongings. Even Maes' lucky necklace still hangs on her vanity mirror. I won't let Justin vacate the house, It's silly I know but they could still come back right. Even tho her mothers blood oath was severed when I took over they were never kicked out of the pack they just simply didn't resolidify their pack oath with their new alpha so I can not mindlink with them. We could box everything up and move it to storage but I'm not ready to do that yet. This was their home for ten years they can't just up and leave one day and never return. I refuse to believe it.
"Hey boss what's eating at ya?"
Justin must have approached me at some point in my day dream and I hadn't noticed. Now he stands slightly infront of me but just off to the side of my view to the forest.
"Do you think they will ever come back?"
I said it low almost hoping he wouldn't hear but wolf senses are superior to most creature. He looked at me for a long while. Probably debating how to address my question. He know what Mae means to me but he also wants whats best for the pack.
"Honestly I hope they do. We all know how much she ment to you and the valuable role her mother played her as well, but if If I'm being honest sir... No I don't. I hung my head, "I just wish I knew she was ok and that I could appologize. I'm not the young pup I was back then and knowing what I do now I'd never would have let that night unfold the way it did. I should have at least chased after her. She was 16 the wood are not safe for wolfs who haven't shifted yet. Who knows what dangers she may have encountered."
"Tyler, buddy I know how you feel but you got to get pass this. Might I suggest you picture a future for her that you can be happy with. One where shes happy and mated and safe. Maybe then you can move on and find yourself the same happiness, for your sake and the packs."
What does the pack have to do with this?"
"Word is spreading from near by packs that you are coming up to your fifth year as alpha. The are saying if you can't prove yourself and your abilities to lead and protect the pack... they are saying you will have challangers waiting on your doorstep once you return home from the wolf games."
Rage bursted through me, never has my ability to lead ever been question and now I'm going to have to prove myself protect my pack. All though that is a daily thing for alphas to do, to be so openedly questioned to the point that some even dare to consider challenging me puts me on edge.
"sign me up for every event and clear any non-important or essential meeting I have for the rest of the month, The White Claw Pack WILL make its mark at theses games and no one will dare question my alpha abilities.
"Yes Alpha."
"And Justin...do one final search for her... If nothing comes of it we will pack up their house, You are right, it's time."
