burning bridges

Mae's POV

"Ok, you win this dance isn't totally terrible, I'm glad you came and gave us this one last night. I know I said you can't talk about it tonight but promise me something, even when you get your big fancy title, promise me I can still come to you as my friend when I need to?"

"Always Mae, and if I forget again just knock my papers over it seems to do the trick."

We laughed and danced and talked more tonight then we have all year. I really missed having him actually engaged and not just me blabbering on. I know things have to change for the better but it's good to know he'll still be around. Moms right I need new friends, I can't expect Tyler to always be available. He has alot on his plate and I need to respect that.

"Ooo looks who's dancing with the alpha, you think if you dance with him at this lame dance he'll make you his luna? Hahaha"

"Can it Jess, were just friends. Why don't you go back under the bleacher and smoke another joint and leave the rest of us to enjoy our youth while we can."

"whatever your not even worth it, well see how brave you are after your big bad alpha graduates and your all alone."

"THATS ENOUGH JESS" Tyler boomed in his alpha voice. she quivered into a bow and scurried off.

"You didn't need to do that, I can handle her for myself."

"I know but shes just one person I can not stand."

"Come on lets just dance it's a our song."

"We have a song?"

"No but I'm making it ours... what's this song called?"

"O... ya well it's our song now so deal with it."

"whatever you say dear"

"EEWWW"

We both start giggling but then the song abrumptly ends and the lights turn up. The principal is on the stage and worry is sticken across her face.

"I'm sorry to interupt students but Can I get Alpha Tyler and Mae Walker to my office please."

"what did we do?" I turned and looked at Tyler. He was just as confused as I was. The music starts back up again as Tyler takes my hand leading me through the crown. What could she possible want with us and why did she looks so scared.

We push the door open to her office and take a seat infront of her desk. Tyler looks at me and squeezes my hand. The way hes looking at me is like he never has before, pity and fear read all over his face. what does he know, what is he not telling me.

"Mae, I am so sorry to have to pull you out of the dance and tell you this but theres been an accident. It seems there was a fire in your home this evening, when the fire department arrived the flames were already engulfing the house. We found a note and this camera in the driveways with your name written on it."

I was frozen... thats the camera mom used to take our pictures just a few hours ago. I grabbed the note and began to read it to myself.

"Mae

I know this isn't fair to you. I am your mother I should be strong enough to handle anything and be there for you as you finish out your teenage years. But losing your father had been so much more painful then I could have ever imagined. I ache for him daily and my strength to continue putting on a brave face for you dwindles. I know you will be better off without me. You have Tyler, he can protect you, I'm sure as alpha he will make sure you are provided for and looked after. I asked him to take you to the dance tonight, I hope that's alright. I didn't want you to be here in my last moments. Don't you worry I've arranged all our finance into your name and paid for my funeral already. You take care of my girl ok. I know you will be a wonderful and powerful woman one day.

.... I don't know how long I sat there reading and rereading my moms note. It can't be real, she wouldn't take her life by burning everything down. She wouldn't abandon me parentless in my teenage years. She's not gone she can't be.

...Did Tyler know? I saw the fear in his eyes did she tell him she was planning this? Why didn't he tell me I could have stopped it!

"What did you DO!"

"What? what are you talking about?"

Tyler looked baffled but I couldn't believe him how could he not know he's the future alpha and she called him and arranged this whole date. He had to know.

"YOU KNEW SHE WAS GOING TO KILL HERSELF AND YOU JUST LET ME LEAVE THAT HOUSE! I COULD HAVE STOPPED HER I COULD HAVE PROTECTED HER!"

"Mae I didn't know hone..."

"LIAR YOUR THE ALPHA YOU HAD TO KNOW! GET AWAY FROM ME, I NEVER WANT TO SEE YOU AGAIN!"

I stormed out of the principals office into the night. I couldn't believe him or anything. I had to see for myself, see if she was really gone, see if my life was now truely in ruins.

I ran into the woods as quickly as my legs could carry me. tears streaming down my face. I could hear Tyler behind me but i didn't care I kept running. I knew he'd go to my house and wait for me their, I couldn't deal with him so I kept running. My vision was blurred but I pressed on deeper and deeper into the woods. All I could think of was his betrayal. How could he lie to me, how could he just let her die. He had to know right, feel like something was off at least. He knows my mom theres no way he was clueless.

As I pressed on I felt a sudden snap in my legs. I looked down and could faintly see hair sprouting from my hands. I shout out in pain. Another few snaps and I was staring at paws. How is this happening. We don't have our first shift until we are eighteen. I'm sixteen it's unheard of. The only time this has been recorded was when a wolf was in great danger, possessed a great ability or... suffered an extremely mental and emotional tole. A few seconds later and it was over. The pain came and went so quickly I barely processed what was happening.

I came up to a small creek and peered down at my reflection. My wolf was beautiful. My fur was chocolate brown like my hair. My coat so soft and smooth. My eyes glowed an eryie yellow. Using my tongue I traced the edge of my teeth feeling my K9s extending just over my lips. My first shift and I can't even be excited about it. My mom isn't hear to see it. My heart hammered away in my chest and I took off running, down the path of the stream and up a hill until I reach the cliff where the water fell to meet the stream. My wolf erupted with a large howl and I layed down and buried my nose in my paws. Shes gone, shes really gone.

I head a faint wimper in my hear but nothing more even my wolf is so destroyed she cant even formulate an introduction.
