“What do you mean special?”
“I can find wolves that are in need of a pack and I am drawn to them. I help recruit wolves back into packs.”
“That still doesn’t explain how you found me.”
“I followed the other half of Mark’s soul. His pain was so great I used it to find you.”
I looked away from her, fighting to try and hold my tears back and failing. Hurting him was something I never wanted to do and to know it hurt him so much that it brought her right to my door.
“I didn’t mean to hurt him.”
“Then come back with me to our pack. You don’t have to worry about being a fairy. I know my Alpha and Luna would accept you.”
“I can’t… I just can’t. It’s not safe.”
“Why isn’t it safe?”
“The less you know, the better.”
“That isn’t fair.”
“I am a fairy.” I said, trying to lighten the mood.
“If you come back with me then I guess I should get comfortable.” Kat said, kicking her shoes off.
“You can’t stay here.”
“Why?”
“Umm. Because I need to plan.”
“Plan what?”
“It doesn’t matter.”
“You can plan with me here. Do you have anything to eat?” Kat stood up and walked toward the kitchen and opened the refrigerator.
This was not going to work. I needed to figure a way out of this.
“What do fairies eat? You do eat right?”
“Yes we eat.” I said, conjuring her a burger and fries.
“That was the coolest thing I have ever seen.” She said, sitting down and taking a bite. “What is that called?”
“We call it conjuring or blinking. If you watch, I blink when I conjure anything.”
“So cool.”
“Please eat and go. I can even pop you back to your friends.” I said, trying to get her to leave.
“No way, sister, you are stuck with me.”
Feeling defeated, I sat down and blinked myself a plate of chicken tenders and fries again.
“So why did you leave Farie?”
“I just didn’t fit in with the rest of the fairies.”
“I know what it feels like to not fit in.”
“I doubt it’s the same.”
“Really? My Mom is human and my father is a wolf. Because of it, we had to live among humans most of our lives.”
“ Humans aren’t too bad.”
“They are the worst.” She trailed off.
“What happened?” I asked.
“My parents are what humans call an interracial couple. Which to this day still doesn’t make sense to me. They are just two people who love each other.”
She stopped to take another bite before continuing.
“We moved around a lot. Which meant multiple schools and each time the same thing happened. When my Dad would pick me up, the teacher never believed he was my real Dad because he was white and I was too dark. Then the kids started picking up on me, telling me I didn’t look like my Dad.” She trailed off and started playing with her food.
My heart broke for her. I could relate to her feelings more than I wanted to admit, but that wasn’t what she needed to hear at that moment.
“ Humans are as$holes.”
She chuckled. “Some are but not all of them. I mean my mom is one.”
“I can blink us some ice cream.”
“I’m in. Where will I be sleeping?”
“Kat, I really like you. In fact, I feel like I want to trust you. But this just can’t happen.”
“Why?”
“The less you know, the better.”
“That isn’t an answer! You have a chance to be with your mate. Your other half and he is waiting for you and yet you want to walk away.”
“I don’t want to walk away. I have to walk away. You just wouldn’t understand.” I could tell Kat was getting angry.
“Wouldn’t understand? I would give anything to be able to be with my mate.”
“Then why aren’t you?” I asked, confused. She seemed all about me being with my mate.
“He marked another.” She whispered.
“I’m sorry.” I really had no idea what to say.
“Please come back and talk to Mark. Before you say no, I want you to know I will find you. It doesn’t matter where you go, I will be able to find you. Your soul wants to be with him.”
Deep down I knew she was right. I didn’t want to cause Mark more pain and maybe once he knew I was a fairy, he would reject me.
“Freya, he won’t reject you.”
“You don’t know that for sure.”
“I do. Mark is my best friend. I might know him better than I know myself. Now do you need to pack a bag?”
“No, I don’t require one. I can just blink whatever I need. Plus, I won’t be staying long.”
Kat rolled her eyes at me and I couldn’t help but giggle. “What is your address?”
“I can just pop us to your packhouse.”
“Ok. Let me just call my fiends to head home.”
I watched as she made a call and assured the person on the other side she had a way home and she would be home before they would.
“We are all set. Are you ready?” She asked me with a smile.
“As much as I can be.”
I took Kat’s hand and popped us to her home.
