Chapter 21 Macey POV My alarm started blaring at 4:30 in the morning. I reached over to hit the snooze. "s**t, it's almost five, and I needed to hurry and get up and get ready." Mom said I was strong, that I could do this, to move into the warrior's cabin, so I hurried to pack my bags. I wasn't sure how much to pack, but I packed most of my things. Since my dad doesn't want me here anymore, either at the pack house or the warrior's cabin, I wasn't sure where I would be staying. But I'm going to do my best out there. Once I was done packing, I slipped on my shoes, put my hair in a ponytail, ran out the door with an apple in my hand, and my mom mind-linked me. "Honey, don't worry, you have this. I will put your things in the warrior's cabin. I handled your father. He knows to shut his mouth and not call you weak anymore. I am so proud of you. You got this," Did I really have this? Could I really do this? I really wasn't sure if I could or not. But I'm going to do my best. I linked her back, telling her, "Thanks, mom," then I shut the link off. I was the only one out there. I thought it started at five. Where was everyone? I might as well do some warm-ups. I knew how to do those. I watched them several times. I started running laps. I wasn't sure how many I should run. I think I will run until my legs burn. That should do it. What else is there to do but stand around and wait for everyone? Going over to the track, I started my laps. I felt really good. I did one lap, then two, then three, but after a while, I lost count. My legs were burning, and I was huffing and puffing, so I walked off the track to grab my water bottle. I didn't realize people were standing around watching me run. I stopped in my tracks, wondering if I was in trouble. I knew the trainer was a girl named Amanda, and there she was, walking toward me. She had her hair up in a ponytail and was wearing workout shorts and a top. "s**t, was I in trouble for doing this?" Now I was worried. All I wanted to do was warm up. She reached me, then stood in front of me with her arms crossed. I was ready for her to hit me or something, but it never came. "So, you're the new recruit that Angela told me about. I know your mother, Rose, she is an awesome fighter. Come on, let's get you over to the recruits, and we will start. By the way, good running out there. Did you even know how many laps you did?" Shaking my head, she chuckled and then told me. I was shocked. Oh crap, I did over 80 laps. Wow, holy crap. "Are you up for another sixty? That's what the new recruits do on their first day, to see who can do it and who can't." I drank down my water and then said, Yeah, sure, I got in line hoping no one hated me, but they all smiled. "Alright, new recruits, listen up. There will be no bullying, no mocking, no pushing others around. I know some of you will stay, and I know some of you will not show up the next day, and that's okay. You can try it out in the next four months. So, never feel ashamed. I will not allow that here. So no pity parties, is that clear! Alright, so it's your first time, and I have more rules to tell you. Tonight is your last night of freedom, so go out, have some fun, but not too much fun. Go clubbing, go watch a movie, go out to eat. After tonight, your ass belongs to me for the next sixteen weeks. After your training today, go home, pack your things, and then move into the new recruits' cabin. Your momma and daddy will not be feeding you for sixteen weeks. You will be feeding yourself. Learn to cook, people, because that's how you're going to eat. Alright, Macey here says she can run another sixty laps, so that's what I want you to do. Get moving, get on that track, and give me sixty laps. If one of you falls, y'all better help them up and keep moving. We do not leave anyone behind. Now, let's get going." Damn, she is tough. I like her. Running back over to the track, we ran our sixty laps. A few tripped and fell hard, but we picked them up, and we kept on going. Once the laps were done, we ran over to our waters and drank them down. I was thankful I brought three with me. "Alright, guys. This is what I want to see. Sixty squats, leg lifts, push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups. I want you to do some arm twirls as well, like this." She moved her arms, one on each side, then started moving them in circles. S***, my arms are going to fall off, but I'll do it. "Alright, you saw how I did that. Well, you do that as well. Come on, let's get moving. I want to see what I told you to do." That's when I was really hoping that we each had our own rooms in those cabins and hope that each bedroom had its own bathroom because I'm going to need a shower after this. Three hours later, we were done. She kept making us do it over and over again; my legs and arms felt like they were going to fall off. "Alright, guys, that's enough for today. Remember what I told you. Go out and have some fun, but before you do, go pack and get your rooms. Macey, your mom already put your things in the cabin; you just need to pick your room." Geez, did she really have to say that out loud? She could have mind-linked me to tell me, but no one even batted an eye. They were all running off to pack so they could pick their rooms, so I decided to head over to the cabin. Once there, I got my bags. I didn't want to pick the best rooms; I don't want anyone thinking anything, so I picked the very last one that was in the corner upstairs. The others were so easy to get to. Putting my bags in the room I picked, unpacking, then putting everything away, I hurried to shower. Then I put on sweatpants and a long shirt; I just wanted to feel comfortable. I dried my hair and then placed it in a messy bun. I noticed there was a flat-screen TV on the wall. D*** it, I hope all the rooms have these. So I hurried to check, and sure enough, every room had one. They even had a mini-fridge in their rooms. I headed back to my room, then plopped down on the bed. I noticed a note on the nightstand; who in the world? I picked it up and started reading. 'Hello, my daughter, I guessed right, didn't I? You would pick the room in the far back so everyone would be comfortable. I stocked your mini-fridge with the things you like, and I even stocked the kitchen so everyone would have food and drinks. Remember, you're stronger than you think you are, and I am very proud of you. Love, Mom I reread the letter over and over again until I folded it up and placed it under my pillow. My mother knows me all too well. I just didn't know how well she actually knows me.'
