Bucky waking up in the middle of the night because of nightmares is nothing new. At the start of your relationship they happened almost every night but now, a year on, they only happened once or twice a week.
He never woke you up when he had a nightmare, he didn't want you to see him like that. He would lock himself in his bathroom until he calmed down.
You always woke up when he was having a nightmare, it was like your body just knew that he had left the bed. You always wanted to go and help him but Steve said it's best to let him be.
This time was different. You could hear Bucky heavily sobbing from the bathroom. Normally the sound of his cries would be drowned out by Bucky smashing things in the bathroom but this time it was just him crying.
The sound of hearing the person you love cry made your heart break and you couldn't help but cry as well. You couldn't just sit there and listen to him cry. You had to help him.
"Bucky." You said softly, knocking on the bathroom.
There was no response, just cries.
"Buck, please I want to help you."
"Doll, please just go back to bed. I don't want to hurt you." Bucky said through sobs.
"Do you really think I'm going to be able to sleep whilst you're in there crying Bucky because I won't. Let me in, let me help." You begged.
It was no use. You begged and begged but Bucky wasn't going to let you in. You had no choice but to break into the bathroom. You were apart of the Avenger so of course you knew how to pick a little lock.
When the door swung open you heart broke. The sight in front of you made you want to break down and cry but you couldn't, you had to stay strong for Bucky. Bucky was sat down with he knees to his chest in front of the bath crying his heart out.
"Bucky." You sighed kneeling in front of him.
"I'm a mess, I don't understand why you stay with me. You shouldn't have to deal with all of this shit." He sobbed.
"I don't want to hear anything like that Bucky, I love you and I am going to stick by your side no matter what." You said sternly.
You scooted closer to Bucky so you were by his side and wrapped yours arms around him. He instantly wrapped his arms around your waist. You sat there for a few minutes whilst Bucky tried to calm down.
"Hold me closer, please." Bucky whispered, still crying lightly.
You did as you were told and moved as close as possible the Bucky. He laid his head on your chest and cried into your shirt, or rather his shirt. Your hand instantly went to his hair and you ran your fingers through his long brown hair.
"I'm meant to be the one to protect you, not the other way around." Bucky said after he had stopped crying, his head still laying on your chest.
"You do protect me Buck, you protect me all the time. Remember that time we were at one of Tony's parties and that drunk guy started hitting on me and grabbed my bum, you knocked him out with one punch." You smiled at the memory.
"That's because you're mine and I don't like sharing." Bucky mumbled into your shirt.
"I'm glad I'm yours." You smiled kissing the top of his head.
"Why though, that's what I don't get. I'm a mess." Bucky started crying again.
"Why? Are you seriously asking me that Bucky. I'm glad I'm yours because you can make me laugh without even trying, you're always there when I need cheering up, you make my life so much better and let's not forget the fact that you look like a Greek God." You said trying the lighten the mood.
"I love you doll, so f*****g much it hurts."Bucky said looking up at you and holding your face in his hands.
"If you have another nightmare I want you to tell me, okay? I want to help you through this Buck, I want to hold you when you cry." You said looking into his eyes.
"Thank you." He said before placing his head back on your chest.
"You don't have to thank me James. I'm always going to be here to hold you when you're upset, I promise."
