Cole POV
“I’m starving,” Ariella announces as we fix our clothes.
“I hope you like chicken,” I grin. “Because that’s what's on the menu.”
“What’s chicken?” She frowns.
“It’s poultry,” I explain. “And it’s …”
“I know what chicken is,” she throws a pillow at me. “I’m just joking.”
“Oh, really,” I grab her around the waist and pull her against my chest. “You have a sense of humour after all.”
“Yeah, I know,” she wrinkles her nose. “I’m not much fun.”
“You’re plenty of fun,” I murmur and kiss her. “Maybe a little too serious. I haven’t seen you smile yet.”
“Really?” She frowns. “Not once.”
“Not once,” I confirm, lovingly stroking her cheek.
“In my defence, vampires aren’t something to smile about,” she grunts.
“Alpha,” Preston mind-links me in a panic. “The East gate. There are five more. They took us by surprise and Davy’s dead.”
“I’m coming,” I reply.
“What’s wrong?” Ariella looks at me curiously.
“More vampires,” I huff and tell her what Preston said.
“We should go,” she says quickly.
“Ariella …”
“Don’t Ariella me,” she cuts me off and heads for the door. “We’re in this together. Stop fussing.”
“Just be careful, please?” I beg as we start running. I do not want her to go, I want her safe, but I know I will be wasting my breath.
“Cut my hand when we get there,” she shouts.
“Are you insane?” I gape at her.
“They already killed a wolf,” she replies. “The smell of my blood will make them irrational and then your pack can do their thing.”
“I don’t like it, Ariella,” I protest.
“Neither do I, but I trust you,” she shouts, leaving me in the dust when she starts running at full speed.
I shift and run as fast as I can to catch up with her.
It is absolutely chaos when we arrive at the scene. Wolves are protecting our border the best they can, but the vampires took advantage of the element of surprise.
“I thought you said there were only five,” I mind-link Preston angrily.
“There were only five when I called,” he defends himself.
“Cole,” Ariella looks at me, holding out her hand. “Do it, now.”
I cringe inwardly as I lift my paw. I do not want to do this. I was not going to do it, but we are losing. We are at a disadvantage, and I need to restore the balance.
“Protect your Luna at all costs,” I order the warriors.
The second I cut Ariella’s palm, the vampires cease their attack and turn towards her. For a moment, everything and everyone freezes. The wolves stare in wonder at the vampires who are hissing and baring their fangs. Their eyes fixated on Ariella.
Then all hell breaks loose when the vampires charge Ariella in unison.
“Now, dammit,” I order, and my wolves start attacking them from behind.
A vampire lunges towards Ariella, and I leap forward. I bite into his neck and drive him into the dirt before I claw his heart out, leaving a bloody puddle. I swing around and my blood stills as I watch Ariella get a vampire in a chokehold. With her arm around his neck, she places a hand against his head, twists and pulls his head off.
Her eyes widen and she utters an ear-piercing scream. It is so loud, and at such a high pitch that my wolves cower and the vampires cover their ears. Only then do I notice the vampire behind her, his fangs buried into her back.
“Kill them,” I run towards Ariella. “Kill them all.”
With one swift swipe, I decapitate the vampire on her back. I shift and kneel next to her.
“Ariella,” I rip her shirt off and inspect her injuries. “Love, please, talk to me.”
“Ouch,” she moans.
“Thank Goddess, you’re okay,” I cradle her into my arms.
“No,” I shout when I feel her go limp in my arms.
I reach for her pulse and sigh relieved when I feel a pulse. Without wasting time, I pick her up and run towards the clinic.
Ariella POV
“Hey, pipsqueak,” Raquel smiles at me.
“What happened?” I look around disoriented, but we are surrounded by nothing but the colour white.
“In the clinic,” she replies. “Well, sort of. Your body is in the clinic, but your soul is with us. You gave us quite a scare.”
“I’m dead?” My eyes widen and I frantically try to sit up.
“Don’t,” strong hands stop me and for the first time I notice a gorgeous man with hair the colour of sunlight. “You’ll ruin my hard work.”
“Who are you?” I frown.
“Thomas,” he flashes me a charming smile. “I’m a healer.”
“Raquel, please,” I turn to her. “What’s going on?”
“Make it quick,” Thomas says. “She needs to go back.”
“You accidentally fell out of heaven,” Raquel quickly tells me what happened. “You no longer have wings, but you’re technically still an angel because you weren’t kicked out. You fell while protecting the Goddess. The portal is close to your mate’s pack, that’s why they keep on popping up at your borders. Ariella, the vampire king keeps sending them to attack the heavenly realm. We need your help; you must find and kill him.”
“But you’re angels and have watchers,” I reason. “Why can’t you just tell me where to find him?”
“He hides in the darkness,” she explains. “We can’t see him.”
“One more thing,” Thomas looks at me sternly. “It’s a thousand times worse for an angel than for a human or a wolf when a vampire bites them. Please don’t let it happen again. You nearly drained me during the healing process.”
“Now, close your eyes and you’ll wake up in the clinic,” Raquel smiles.
“Okay,” I nod and lay down.
“Hey, pipsqueak, get a sword,” Raquel shouts before everything turns dark.
**
Pain instantly jolts through me when I force my eyes open.
“Ariella,” Cole sighs relieved and kisses me on the forehead. “You’re okay.”
“Ouch,” I complain and close my eyes. Thomas might have healed me, but he did not take away the pain.
“Pain lets you know you’re alive,” Doctor Mayer replies, and I wish I were well enough to kick him. What a stupid thing to say. It is no consolation or comfort, and it does not help with the pain.
“Can I go home?” I croak.
“You should rest,” Mayer pushes his hands in his coat. “I would like to keep you overnight for observation.”
“Nope,” I grunt. Mayer is now getting on my nerves. I will not be responsible for my actions if I must spend the night here with him around. “I can rest at home.”
“I’ll ensure she doesn't get out of bed,” Cole intervenes.
“Fine,” Mayer reluctantly agrees. “I’ll give you painkillers to take home. You’re going to need it.”
“You scared me to death,” Cole wraps me in his arms once Mayer is out of the room.
“You need to triple the warriors at the East gate,” I say as I enjoy his touch. “The portal is close by and that’s why they keep showing up.”
“The what?” Cole asks confused.
“The portal to the heavenly realm,” I reply and tell him about Raquel and Thomas. “And I need a sword.”
