CHAPTER ONE
CHAPTER ONE Steven Parker glanced up from the accounting book at the sound of the back door opening. It was quarter to five on Wednesday afternoon, and the living room was full of guests. To his shock, the person coming in was his nerd sister, Shayne, who spent most of her days attending the library near her school. The rain outside was relentless, leaving her soaking wet. Bristling with indignation, Steven slid back the book in front of him. "Where are you from?" he called out, annoyance evident in his voice. Shayne remained silent, choosing to ignore her brother's provocation. Unfazed, Steven continued, "You were at the library, right?" Shayne shot him an exasperated look but remained tight-lipped. “Yes, I was,” Shayne replied, not interested in the conversation. Shayne went upstairs to her room, and as she dried herself off, she received a phone call from her best friend, Lorraine. “Hey Shay!” Lorraine screamed through the phone. “Lor, you should learn to stop screaming when you greet someone,” she said sternly. “Look, I am sorry, but I have exciting news to share with you,” “Talk, I am listening.” “I have found a dance partner for my matric dance,” Lor said excitedly. “Wow, that's great,” Shayne replied. “Uhmm, who is he?” Shayne asked curiously. “It's Lwandile,” Lor replied silently. "What the f**k, Lorraine," Shayne shouted. "I am going to the coffee shop, come there!" Feeling a mix of emotions, Shayne grabbed her jacket and headed out to meet Lorraine, her mind swirling with memories of the past conflict with Lwandile. At the coffee shop, Shayne spotted Lorraine in a corner booth, nervously tapping her fingers on the table. As Shayne approached, she couldn't help but feel a twinge of concern about Lwandile's involvement. "You really chose Lwandile as your dance partner?" Shayne asked incredulously, taking a seat across from Lorraine. Lorraine hesitated, her excitement dampened by Shayne's disapproval. "I know it's surprising, but he's changed. He's genuinely sorry for what happened before." Shayne raised an eyebrow, recalling the traumatic incident involving her younger sister. "Changed, huh? I find that hard to believe." Lorraine sighed, "I wouldn't have considered it if I didn't think he deserved a chance. Besides, it's just a dance, not a commitment." The tension between them lingered until Lorraine decided to shift the conversation. "Anyway, how's your day been? What's up with Steven?" Shayne sighed, "Steven is being his usual annoying self. He's irritated because I came home soaked from the rain." Lorraine chuckled, "Typical Steven. So, are you going to the matric dance too?" Shayne shrugged, "I haven't thought about it. I've got other things on my mind, you know?" “But Shayne, you know I can help you get a boyfriend, right?” Lor said, unsure. “Lor, you know I am not interested in boys,” Shayne said. “Are you a lesbian perhaps?” Lor asked with her eyes wide open. “No, I am just not interested in dating or anything concerning boys,”Shayne said with a confused look. “ Let's go now.” Shayne called the waiter and paid for Lorraine's order. The waiter was staring at Shayne seductively. Shayne winked at the waiter, and Lorraine saw everything. They left the coffee shop. They went to the parking lot. Shayne opened the front passenger door for Lorraine. She went to the driver's door and got inside. They drove until they stopped, where there was a lot of traffic. “Shayne ,I think we should go to a therapist” Lor said. “Sure, let's go now.” Shayne replied. The traffic was cleared. Shayne drove to the best therapist she knew. She arrived there and went inside alone. She knocked on the door. After a few minutes, the therapist opened. “Ms Johnson, what did I do that you came to meet me today?” the therapist asked, confused. “I came to talk to you about something important.” Shayne said. “You can sit down, Ms Johnson,” the therapist said. “So what is it that brought you here?” “Nothing much, just a few questions,” “What are those questions about?” the therapist asked nervously. “It's about my sexuality,” “Meaning?” the therapist asked, confused. “Look, I am confused about my sexuality. I am not interested in males, but when it comes to females. I feel overwhelmed, like I want to have that specific relation with females. Today, I was at the famous coffee shop with my friend. Before leaving, I called the waiter so that I could pay. The waiter was busy blushing, and I found myself winking at her, causing her to blush more.” Shayne said, looking at the therapist. “I think you might be a lesbian. Perhaps you should try going on a date with a girl, and that might help you in knowing what you want.” the therapist said, smiling. “Why don't you be my date then?” Shayne said, winking at the therapist before getting up. “I now see what your friend always talks about. Go away.” the therapist said, laughing while chasing Shayne out. Shayne left the therapist's office, chuckling at the unexpected twist in their conversation. As she stepped outside, the rain had subsided, leaving a fresh, damp scent in the air. She glanced at her phone and noticed a missed call from Steven. Sighing, Shayne returned the call as she walked back to the parking lot. "What do you want, Steven?" she asked, her tone still holding a hint of annoyance. "I just wanted to know where you disappeared to," Steven replied, his voice laced with irritation. Shayne rolled her eyes. "I went to the coffee shop with Lorraine. By the way, she found a dance partner for her matric dance.” “Oh, great. Another reason for her to be overexcited," Steven muttered. Ignoring his comment, Shayne continued, "And Steven, you might want to brace yourself for this. Lorraine's dance partner is none other than Lwandile." "Lwandile? Seriously?" Steven exclaimed. "What possessed her to choose him?" "I don't know, Steven. Apparently, he's changed," Shayne replied, her skepticism evident. “Shayne cleared her throat, prompting Lorraine to end her call. “How did it go?” Lorraine asked, her tone indicating genuine concern. "Better than expected," Shayne replied, her focus on starting the car Lorraine's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "So, you've figured things out?" Shayne nodded, her grip on the steering wheel tightening as she pulled out of the parking lot. "I guess you now know what you want," Lorraine remarked, a hint of sarcasm in her voice. Shayne didn't respond, her thoughts consumed by the newfound clarity about her identity. She dropped Lorraine off at her house and drove back home, the weight of her revelation settling in as she navigated the familiar streets.
