Chapter 1
“I can only say sorry. I just woke up one day and realized that I don’t feel the same way about you anymore.” Clinton said and he kept avoiding her eyes.
These were the words that she found herself hearing from her boyfriend. It sounded so real which had her think twice about it only to end up with no explanation as to why it would be real, but she chose to be quiet for some minutes and absorb everything that he just said.
Clinton looked so sad while he summoned enough courage to look at her. Elvia burst out laughing, holding her stomach with tears in her eyes, clapping.
Clinton suddenly turned confused, frowning hard.
“You have improved a lot. Is that a line for a new role?” she asked innocently to Clinton. She tried to stay unfazed and indifferent so her voice wouldn’t sound as if she was affected by the words he stated earlier. She wanted to wave it off as one of his lines for his audition.
Clinton shook his head, looked at her and held her shoulders.
“Elvia, listen to me please, I don’t know how to start explaining this right now, but,” he suddenly paused as if short of words.
She felt her heart pounding while looking at Clinton with a lot of questions in her heart. Probably, her boyfriend was rehearsing the next piece he needed for his audition and she must admit that he was doing extremely great, and his words were filled with emotions.
Clinton is an actor, so he always comes to auditions to secure new roles.
Elvia looked at him with sadness in her eyes as well as her heart. She wanted to be of help to her boyfriend.
“What do you mean?” she asked with her eyebrows knitted together in a frown. “Please come clean and enable me to understand what you are insinuating.” She added while looking directly at Clinton.
It pricked her heart when their eyes met and locked. She couldn’t even point out the emotions that she could see in his eyes, making it seem so true.
A few seconds passed and Clinton finally reacted to what she said. He looked around in nervousness as if he was panicked at the juncture in which their conversation was going.
But wasn’t this just a part of his rehearsal? Why did it suddenly feel different when their eyes met?
“Elvia I am very sorry, but this isn’t just a rehearsal. This is what I feel right now. I am sorry, but I am no longer happy in our relationship. I don’t know how or when it happened. And like I said, there was just this one day that I realized that I couldn’t feel the happiness I used to feel when I am with you and I decided not to hide this from you. I don’t want to act as if nothing has changed on my part and let you think that all is well between us.” He said to her and averted his gaze.
Elvia felt like a bucket of cold water was poured unto her. She pinched herself, trying to be convinced that she was having a nightmare.
She couldn’t tell if what was happening was for real or just a prank. She couldn’t figure if all what Clinton was saying was a part of his script or he was telling the truth. She couldn’t believe that Clinton suddenly fell out of love with her. How could that happen?
Her mind was in chaos.
They had been in a relationship since college, so what’s happening? She was completely shocked and didn’t have anything to say to Clinton.
She tried drinking the apple juice she had ordered when she arrived earlier, but she accidentally spilled it on herself.
She felt the coldness of the drink on her skin which meant; REALITY.
Clinton didn’t even bother to help her wipe the juice that spilled on her, he ignored and let her do it herself.
With trembling hands, she grabbed the napkin on the table and wiped the juice off her pants.
After she was done, she took a deep breath to calm herself. She was hoping that at this moment, Clinton would announce that it was all a prank, give her a soothing hug, assuring her that it would never happen, but he didn’t. she was praying that the man was telling a big joke, and that this was part of his silly games.
She swallowed hard, and tried to search for words that she would say to her longtime boyfriend and soon to be Ex-boyfriend if she didn't fix what was going on between them right now.
Elvia cleared her throat. She needed to be brave and sort things out with the man in front of her.
Though she could feel the heart palpitation, she still needed to clarify things with Clinton.
She looked into his eyes and could see that the man couldn’t meet her eyes, and she knew that something was very wrong with her boyfriend
But even before she began speaking, Clinton opened his mouth and spoke again.
“Elvia, I know that we have been together for more than 2 years, and I am sorry that we are ending our relationship just like this. I just wanted to be honest with you and myself. I feel caged with someone I don’t love anymore and don’t want us to suffer. I don’t want fights every day because I could no longer return the love you feel toward me. I want this to end now that we respect each other. You have been good to me and I don’t want to hurt you in anyway. I want us to still remain friends, to be good friends,” Clinton said which made her flabbergasted.
