After dinner ended, the mansion slowly became quiet again.
Naomi stood alone on the balcony outside her room, staring at the city lights in the distance.
The night air was cool, but it helped calm her racing thoughts.
Everything that had happened during dinner kept replaying in her mind.
Sophia’s insults.
Alexander’s mother’s cold stare.
And Alexander defending her.
Naomi sighed softly.
“This world really isn’t for someone like me,” she whispered.
“You’re thinking too much.”
Naomi jumped slightly at the sudden voice behind her.
She turned around.
Alexander stood in the doorway, his expression calm as usual.
“How long have you been there?” she asked nervously.
“Long enough,” he replied.
He walked onto the balcony, standing beside her.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
The city lights reflected in Alexander’s dark eyes.
Naomi finally broke the silence.
“You didn’t have to defend me tonight.”
Alexander glanced at her.
“Yes, I did.”
Naomi looked confused.
“Why?”
Alexander’s answer was simple.
“Because you’re my wife.”
Naomi gave a small laugh.
“But we both know this marriage isn’t real.”
Alexander didn’t respond immediately.
Instead, he looked out at the city again.
“Real or not,” he said quietly, “no one humiliates someone who belongs to me.”
Naomi felt her heart skip slightly at those words.
She wasn’t sure why.
Maybe it was the way he said it.
Or maybe it was the first time she had heard something protective in his voice.
Alexander suddenly turned toward her.
“You handled dinner well.”
Naomi blinked in surprise.
“Was that… a compliment?”
Alexander almost smiled.
“Don’t get used to it.”
Naomi rolled her eyes slightly.
For the first time since arriving at the mansion, the tension between them felt a little lighter.
Alexander checked his watch.
“You should get some rest.”
Naomi nodded.
“Thank you… for earlier.”
Alexander paused before leaving.
Then he said something unexpected.
“My driver will take you to the hospital tomorrow.”
Naomi’s eyes widened.
“To see my father?”
“Yes.”
Her chest filled with relief and gratitude.
“Thank you, Alexander.”
He gave a small nod before walking away.
Naomi remained on the balcony for a moment longer.
She looked up at the night sky thoughtfully.
Maybe the cold billionaire wasn’t as heartless as everyone believed.
But she had a feeling that understanding Alexander King would not be easy.
And their complicated marriage had only just begun.
