The first sign
The sun rose like any other day over the sleepy town of Maplewood. It painted the streets in soft golden hues and woke up the birds that chirped delightfully from their nests. People began their routines, unaware of the events soon to unfold. Maggie Thompson, a nurse at the local hospital, started her day with an early morning jog. The cool air filled her lungs as she pushed herself, trying to maintain the pace she had set for herself. Running was more than just exercise; it was a way to clear her mind before a long shift. As she jogged past the park, she noticed a group of kids playing and couples walking hand in hand. A calm, ordinary day. But things weren’t quite right. As Maggie rounded the corner near the hospital, she saw something that caught her attention—a man stumbling down the sidewalk. He looked disheveled, clothes torn and dirtied, his hair a wild mess. At first, she thought he might be drunk, but then she noticed the expression on his face—it was vacant, almost lifeless. “Do you need help?” she called out, slowing her pace to get a better look at him. He turned towards her slowly, and for a moment, she thought he might respond. But instead, he let out a guttural sound, nothing like a normal greeting. It sent a shiver down her spine but before she could react, he lunged forward. Maggie’s instincts kicked in. She turned on her heel and ran. Adrenaline coursed through her as she sprinted back to the hospital. She felt an overwhelming sense of panic. What was happening? Once inside, she gasped for breath, her heart pounding. As she made her way to the nurses’ station, her mind was racing, trying to rationalize what had just occurred. Maybe he was just sick? Perhaps a mental health issue. But she couldn’t ignore how wrong it had felt. The chaotic morning shifted quickly when the hospital's loudspeakers crackled. “Attention staff, we need everyone to remain calm. We are experiencing an influx of patients with extreme aggression and unusual symptoms, please prepare for emergency protocols.” “What on earth?” Maggie whispered to herself, feeling the tension rise in her chest. She exchanged worried glances with her colleagues. They had seen their fair share of accidents and emergencies, but this felt different. In the emergency room, the atmosphere was tense. Patients were rushed in—some bleeding, others in shock, reporting strange attacks in various parts of town. Emergency responders arrived, their faces expressionless, as they wheeled in patients who were biting and clawing at anyone who came close. “What is wrong with them?” a young doctor asked, his brow furrowed in disbelief as he examined the first patient. He had to hold the man's arms because he struggled violently, his eyes wide with fear yet holding no reason. Maggie moved to check the next patient who was barely conscious—a woman with deep lacerations on her arms. She quickly assessed her injuries, her training kicking in. But as she tried to ask the woman questions, the woman suddenly began thrashing, screaming for help in a way that sounded almost primal. “Get her sedated!” Maggie shouted, unable to keep the fear from her voice. The chaos intensified around her. As the day unfolded, reports began circulating about similar incidents all over town. It was no longer just aggression; people were losing their minds, attacking anyone nearby without reason. Maggie couldn’t shake the feeling that something more sinister was at play. It felt like the beginning of something terrible. Later that evening, the hospital stood eerily quiet, a stark contrast to the chaos earlier in the day. Maggie took a moment to sit down in the break room, her hands trembling slightly as she wrapped them around a cup of coffee. “Do you think it’s a virus?” one of her fellow nurses asked as she joined Maggie at the table, her voice low in a conspiratorial whisper. “Maybe,” Maggie replied. “But why are they acting like… like animals? It’s not just sickness, there’s something else.” A loud crash echoed through the hallway, followed by frantic shouts. Both women exchanged a look of dread before rushing back toward the commotion. As they turned the corner, their hearts sank. A security guard, one they had seen often, lay on the ground, blood pooling around him. A patient from earlier had broken free from restraints and was biting into the guard’s arm. “No! Stop!” Maggie shouted, horrified. The sight froze her in place as shock seized her. She couldn’t comprehend what she was witnessing. Another nurse tried to subdue the man, but he fought back with an inhuman strength, his teeth glimmering with the guard’s blood. “Help him!” Maggie screamed, aware that panic was taking over the room. They needed to act. Suddenly, a loud gunshot rang out, echoing in the hallway. It was the police. An officer had arrived on the scene, and with one shot, he managed to take down the patient. The room fell silent, the reality of what just happened settling in. Horror washed over Maggie and her colleagues as they stared at the chaos in disbelief. “This can’t be happening,” someone muttered. “Is he—?” another nurse began, pointing toward the guard, who was now unmoving, lifeless on the ground. Maggie’s stomach twisted in knots as she realized they had crossed a line. This was not just a bizarre outbreak; it was something far worse. “Get everyone to safety!” an officer barked, breaking the stunned silence. “We need to secure the hospital. This isn’t going to end well.” As she watched people scramble to follow orders, Maggie felt a cold dread settle into her bones. She had always been a healer, a protector. But now, she was staring into the abyss of something unfathomable. The world they knew was swiftly unraveling before their eyes, and she didn’t know if she could hold on. Maplewood was about to change forever.
